While it grew, shrank, stood still, and grew again, I have incurred many debts of gratitude to people who supported and encouraged me throughout the process of researching, and writing this dissertation, and who sometimes believed in me more than I believed in myself. First and foremost, I would like to thank my exceptional supervisor Maxine Berg, who has been my rock in the midst of many changes, and who supported my project at critical moments with great vigour. During the last, difficult stages especially, she always offered clear-sighted, invaluable, and prompt comments on the development of the work. I am also immensely grateful to Maxine for allowing me to take part in her ERC-funded project, ‘Europe’s Asian Centuries: Trading Eurasia, 1600-1830’, between January 2011 and June 2014. The project allowed me to pursue a PhD from an undoubtedly privileged position, not least with regard to generous financial support for many research and conference trips – a rare and cherished chance for which I remain ever grateful. My thanks must therefore also go to the European Research Council, and to other funding bodies that supported workshops, conference, and archival trips – chiefly the Economic History Society and the History Departments of the universities of Warwick, Guangzhou and Yale. My archival missions were greatly assisted by experienced and helpful staff, including Margaret Franzen Borg and Dr. Marguerite Ragnow at the James Ford Bell Library, University of Minneapolis, and Richard Morel and Margaret Makepeace at the British Library. The ‘Trading Eurasia’ project introduced me to a circle of outstanding scholars on whose advice I could rely throughout my time at Warwick, and beyond. In this respect, the increasingly successful activity of the British East India Company was an example for the Vienna government in indicating of which lucrative possibilities lay in the proper development of trade in the east. Austria soon decided to try to organize trade expeditions to India itself and the British experience was of primary importance to it. An indispensable link for the launch of such ventures was the opportunity for the representatives of the Austrian diplomatic network to meet directly with individuals from the group of traders who had already had extensive experience in trade with India. This was exactly the case in London in 1774, when the Austrian Ambassador Ludovico Luigi Carlo Maria di Barbiano di Belgiojoso met one of the most famous European entrepreneurs of the second half of the 18th century, William Bolts. It was the beginning of a new great Austrian adventure in Asia and at the same time an attempt to radically redefine the essential nature of the Habsburg position and philosophy.

    http://www.ucalgary.ca/hic • ISSN 1492-7810 2010/11 • Vol. 9, No. 1 The Americanization of the Canadian Army’s Intellectual Development, 1946-1956 Alexander Herd Abstract Canadian scholarship has detailed the impact of increasing American political, economic, and socio-cultural influences on post-Second World War Canada. This paper demonstrates that the Canadian Army was likewise influenced by the Americans, and changes to the army’s professional military education are evidence of the “Americanization” of the army. During the early Cold War period, Canadian Army staff officer education increasingly incorporated United States Army doctrine, ranging from the basic organization of American formations to complex future military strategy. Research is primarily based on the annual staff course syllabi at the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston, Ontario, which indicate that Canadian Army leaders were sensitive not only to the realities of fighting alongside the Americans in a future war, but to the necessity of making the Canadian Army, previously historically and culturally a British army, compatible with its American counterpart. In the context of limited scholarship on the early Cold War Canadian Army, this paper advances the argument that the army’s intellectual capacity to wage war was largely determined by external influences. During the first decade after the Second World War, Canadian society underwent a distinct transition. The East India Company traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpetre, tea and opium. The Company was granted a Royal Charter in 1600,[2] making it the oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies. Shares of the company were owned by wealthy merchants and aristocrats. The government owned no shares and had only indirect control. The Company eventually came to rule large areas of India Company flag after 1801 with its own private army, exercising military power and assuming Former type Public administrative functions.[3] Company rule in India effectively began in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and lasted until 1858 when, following the Industry International trade Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Government of India Act 1858 led to the Fate Dissolved British Crown assuming direct control of India in the new British Raj. Founded 1600 The Company was dissolved in 1874 as a result of the East India Stock Defunct June 1, 1874 Dividend Redemption Act passed one year earlier, as the Government of India Act had by then rendered it vestigal, powerless and obsolete. Its Headquarters London, England functions had been fully absorbed into official government machinery in the British Raj and its private army had been nationalized by the British Colonial India Crown.
