Most of the action takes place in China and the South China Sea. The book is full of exciting, action- packed scenarios. There’s even a couple of good air-to-air battles thrown in to indulge the flyboys among us. President Ryan and Jack Junior play key roles in these scenarios. -

Hanneman Received: 11 June 2007 Ó Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008 Abstract Using data on upper-division students in the University of California system, we show that two distinct cultures of engagement exist on campus. The culture of engagement in the arts, humanities and social sciences focuses on interaction, participation, and interest in ideas. The culture of engagement in the natural sciences and engineering focuses on improvement of quantitative skills through collaborative study with an eye to rewards in the labor market. The two cultures of engagement are strongly associated with post-graduate degree plans. The findings raise questions about normative conceptions of good educational practices in so far as they are considered to be equally relevant to students in all higher education institutions and all major fields of study. Keywords Academic engagement Á Student cultures Á Research universities Á Graduate degree aspirations Considerable scholarly and policy attention has been directed toward the improvement of undergraduate education for more than two decades (see, e.g., AAC 1985; Chickering and Gamson 1987). Yet interest appears to have peaked in recent years, as indicated by large- scale improvement efforts at many of the country’s leading research universities (see, e.g., Rimer 2007). The most important cause of this heightened interest is the report of the Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education (also known as the Spellings Commission). The Spellings Commission proposed incentives for the adoption of stan- dardized testing for purposes of making higher education accountable to consumers. -

Chapter 3 Hegel’s Apocrypha 1 A Rediscovery The term Jugendschriften—writings of youth, is used to refer to a series of texts and fragments produced during Hegel’s years as student and private tutor from the period 1793 to 1800 which he did not himself publish. In 1801 Hegel moved to Jena with the help of Schelling, published his first book, took his habilitation and began his academic career. The Jugendschriften were first published by Hermann Nohl in 1907.1 Nohl was a student of Wilhelm Dilthey (1833–1911), the advocate of the philosophy of life and of hermeneutics, who is also important as one of the founders of historicism. Dilthey himself held the view that a phi- losophy is best described in terms of the history of its development and hence that the biography of a philosopher is often the key to his philosophy. In 1905 he published a work with the title Die Jugendgeschichte Hegels—The history of the young Hegel,2 which was based on the documents in the Royal Prussian Library in Berlin that Nohl published two years later. Dilthey’s concern with Hegel’s early works was thoroughly determined by his own philosophy. For instance, he found that Hegel’s interest in the importance of biography to his- tory was comparable to his own. Hegel had written a Life of Jesus, which means that Hegel tried, just as Dilthey did in the history of philosophy, to consider Jesus Christ not as a dogmatic ‘object’ of theology, but historically, as a matter for historical investigation. -

The “Two Cultures” in Clinical Psychology: Constructing Disciplinary Divides in the Management of Mental Retardation Andrew J. Hogan Creighton University Isis, Vol. 109, no. 4 (2018): 695-719 In a 1984 article, psychologist Gregory Kimble lamented what he saw as the two distinct cultures of his discipline. Writing in American Psychologist, a prominent professional journal, he noted, “In psychology, these conflicting cultures [scientific and humanistic] exist within a single field, and those who hold opposing values are currently engaged in a bitter family feud.” 1 In making his argument, Kimble explicitly drew upon British scientist and novelist C.P. Snow’s 1959 lecture The Two Cultures, in which Snow expressed concern about a lack of intellectual engagement between scientists and humanists, and about the dominant position of the humanities in British education and culture. Kimble used Snow’s critique to help make sense of what he perceived to be a similar polarizing divide between “scientific” and “humanistic” psychologists. 2 As Kimble described it, humanistic psychologists differed form their scientific colleagues in placing their ambitions to enact certain social policies and to promote particular social values- based ideologies ahead of the need for the scientific validation of these approaches. Kimble demonstrated his purported two cultures divide in psychology using survey data he collected from 164 American Psychological Association (APA) members. Each was part of either APA Division 3 (Experimental Psychology) or one of three other Divisions, which represented special interest groups within the psychology field. His results, illustrated on a spectrum from scientific to humanistic orientation, showed a purported divide between experimental psychologists on the scientific side, and their humanistic colleagues in the other three Divisions (See Figures 1,2). -

Introduction The formation and subsequent actions of the Nazi government left a devastating and indelible impact on Europe and the world. In the midst of general technological and social progress that has occurred in Europe since the Enlightenment, the Nazis represent one of the greatest social regressions that has occurred in the modern world. Despite the development of a generally more humanitarian and socially progressive conditions in the western world over the past several hundred years, the Nazis instigated one of the most diabolic and genocidal programs known to man. And they did so using modern technologies in an expression of what historian Jeffrey Herf calls “reactionary modernism.” The idea, according to Herf is that, “Before and after the Nazi seizure of power, an important current within conservative and subsequently Nazi ideology was a reconciliation between the antimodernist, romantic, and irrantionalist ideas present in German nationalism and the most obvious manifestation of means ...modern technology.” 1 Nazi crimes were so extreme and barbaric precisely because they incorporated modern technologies into a process that violated modern ethical standards. Nazi crimes in the context of contemporary notions of ethics are almost inconceivable. -

Highlights include several midshipmens’ journals containing exquisite hand coloured engineering drawings, maps and vignettes; the adventurous tales of Thomas Moody who sailed along the Chinese coast in the late 1870s; and the official log of the HMS Pegasus, captained by the ‘sailor king’, Prince William Henry (later William IV), including a sighting of the young Captain Horatio Nelson in the West Indies, 1786-1788. The man Confucius, as he has been staged in the text of the Analects, is always surrounded by a few key figures with distinct personalities, social backgrounds, and trajectories: the practical and straight-talker Zilu with military training, the gifted and politically skilled Zigong coming from a wealthy family, the youngest and favorite disciple Yan Hui from humble origins whose premature death left the Master inconsolable, Zengzi keen on transmitting the supposed true teachings of Confucius and to whom is attributed the Book of Filial Piety, etc.
