Alchemy is a process of transformation. Julia Cameron This mini-studio will introduce the seemingly magical alchemists‟ experimental methods of transmuting and transforming ordinary objects into extraordinary treasures. It will provide unique opportunities for artists and art instructors to rethink and reinvent ways of using unconventional materials in the art studio. Using discarded cut-up clothing and repurposed translucent papers, trimmings and fabric collage; we will illuminate our thoughts, emotions, memories, and dreams that reveal the mystery of transformation. Participants will learn about the magic and mysteries of alchemy as interpreted by modern and contemporary artists. Demonstrations include mixed-media relief on translucent vellum paper and/or a translucent mylar background. The reliefs are worked from the front and the back in a form of reverse painting using paper, fabric collage, India Ink embroidery, tattoo drawing, and mock sewing. Participants are asked to bring collage papers and materials that are translucent or see through when exposed to light. Bring old correspondence letters, drawings, photos, personal articles of clothing that are attractive, lightweight and see through, beautiful scraps of translucent fabrics, laces, textured papers, and memorabilia that are meaningful and illuminate your personal story. The reclaimed objects and inherent quality of each will inspire a mysterious and impressive work of art. Materials provided include vellum paper, clear mylar, glue, scissors, containers, brushes, India Inks, sharpies, needle, thread, some fabrics, laces, buttons, beads, and collage paper.
