Position Statement Jianping Li, Candidate for IUGG Bureau Member

IUGG has a glorious history of stimulating scientific progress in earth and planetary sciences. Generations of scientists attended its General Assemblies (GA) and its associations’ Scientific Assemblies (SA), symposia, and workshops, and benefited from both its science and culture.

I’m fortunate enough to have attended every IUGG GA and IAMAS SA since 1999. My expertise is climate dynamics and climate change. I have been speakers, invited speakers, chairs, and conveners over the past 15 years. I’m currently Vice-Chair of the IUGG Union Commission on Climatic and Environmental Change (CCEC, 2011-present), Executive Secretary of IAMAS International Commission on Climate (ICCL, 2011-present), a member of the IUGG Honors and Recognition Committee (2010-present), and Secretary General of Chinese National Committee for IUGG (2007-present). I already organized 8 symposia or workshops at IUGG GA or IAMAS SA, namely IAMAS 2005 Scientific Assembly (2-11 August, 2005, Beijing), ICDM/IAMAS Workshop 2012 on Dynamics and Predictability of High-impact Weather and Climate Events (6-9 August, 2012, Kunming), ICCL/IAMAS 2013 Expert Assessment Workshop on Decadal Climate Variability and Cross-Scale Interactions (16-17 April, 2013, Beijing), 1st Workshop of the IUGG Commission on Climatic and Environmental Change (11-12 April, 2014, Beijing) and 1st Congress of China Geodesy and Geophysics (24-26, October, 2014, Beijing). Besides, with assistance of CNC-IUGG secretariat, I helped IUGG to make IUGG souvenirs in 2011. Moreover, I led our CNC-IUGG to translate IUGG e-journal into Chinese so that more Chinese scientists and policymakers are aware of IUGG activities in time. IUGG not only prepares me for a career scientist, but also gives me opportunities to serve the international science community. I think this is the charm of IUGG: great science and vigorous international platform for exchanges. With its 70 Member Adhering Bodies distributed throughout the world, IUGG is able to bring scientists’ work and contribution to the awareness of their countries. I would suggest fully exploiting this network and stressing “science for policy and society” as one of our future foci.

Talking about “science for policy and society”, I think IUGG should actively participate in the ICSU 10-year initiative “Future Earth (FE)–Research for Global Sustainability” (2014-2024). IUGG’s resources in Earth Sciences would be an invaluable asset to FE and what is urgently need from us is providing solution-oriented research and turning science into knowledge for dissemination and societal application. CCEC, of which I’m the vice chair, is a mechanism linkage to FE and in our first workshop, we have examined ways to extend existing understanding to interdisciplinary research by linking it to FE. As one of the results of the workshop, we identified several cross-IUGG interdisciplinary research areas and we are now working on building a platform to showcase the advances of these issues.

To my understanding, being a bureau member of IUGG means not only providing good suggestions on current management and future development of IUGG, but also shouldering these responsibilities. It would be my great honor to work for a greater Union should I be elected.
