The ISA National Athletics which was held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham was a great example of our pupils competing at the highest levels of Sport.

Our golden girls Kiera and Kayleigh did not let us down and were in great form becoming new national champions in the Year 7 1500m and Year 6 600m respectively. Kiera even set a new national record with 5.06 and wants to go under 5 minutes next year!

They weren’t the only ones. Every CHS pupil brought their ‘A’ game and congratulations also go to Henry returning to the scene of his amazing Year 4 600m victory and taking a bronze with the Year 8/9 boys relay team. Hayden was also a great example of this gaining a bronze in the 80m hurdles and then jumping a 50 cm PB in the Year 8/9 Long Jump. I am very proud of all of our qualifiers.

COLCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL PROUDLY HOSTS THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION REGIONAL SWIMMING GALAS

On Wednesday 15th November Colchester High School hosted the Junior ISA East Gala (School Year 4- 6) and on Wednesday 22nd November, the Senior ISA East Gala (School year Year 7-13) at Crown Pools in Ipswich. At stake for each event winner was a place in the East Anglian team for the ISA National Swimming Championships.

20 ISA schools from all over , Essex, and Cambridgeshire took part with Colchester High School winning the overall Senior event.

Adam Dowson, Head of PE at Colchester High School organised both events with the Year 10 & 11 GCSE PE pupils and staff from Colchester High School on behalf of ISA EAST. Mr Dowson said

“It was great to see so many schools in attendance at both of our galas. It ensures that we as a region will be able to take the strongest team possible to the national championships and give so many pupils the opportunity to experience such a great sport on the highest stage at the Olympic Pool. We are of course incredibly proud of all our own pupils who did so well in the regional gala and would like to specifically congratulate Georgia, who won both the Year 8 girls Breaststroke and Freestyle and William, who took first place in both the Year 9/10 boys Butterfly and Individual Medley. William also broke the 1 minute barrier in the 100m Open Freestyle (pictured).”

8 EQUESTRIAN

CHSA EQUESTRIAN TEAM’S AMAZING YEAR

The CHSA Equestrian team (Shanel, Kitty and Aaron) continue to showcase some amazing riding in 2017-18.

NSEA Regional Championship—13 rosettes with 3 team placings out of 3 entries - 3rd place in the 60cm champs, 1st place in the 70cm qualifier and 2nd place in the 70cm champs.. On top of that Aaron got an individual 2nd place in the 70cm qualifier and an individual 2nd place in the 70cm champs, Shanel got an individual 4th place in the 70cm qualifier and Kitty got an individual 6th place in the 70cm qualifier.

Jays Equestrian Centre, Suffolk—Aaron was amazing in the 70cm speeding his way to an individual first place and Kitty beautifully jumped her way to an individual third place! Overall Shanel, Aaron and Kitty came away with sachets for Team first place! In the 80cm Kitty jumped to perfection landing her in 5th place as an individual.

Thank you to the CHSA for the new saddle pads and hat silks.

9 RUGBY

ISA NATIONAL U-10 TOUCH RUGBY TRIUMPH

On Wednesday 1st of November, our Year 5 rugby players took part in the ISA National Touch Rugby finals. The boys did not disappoint and tied for first place. As CHS had not conceded a single try they finished ISA touch Rugby champions. Fantastic results as the team had only experienced tag rugby in Games lessons up to now.

10 YEAR 8 PUPILS CELEBRATE WINNING ALL SCHOOLS ISLAND SEVENS

The highlight of the Spring term for Mr Dowson, was the inaugural Island Rugby Sevens Tournament run by Mersea Rugby Club. We entered teams in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 with mixed success. Year 10 did well and finished runners up to Tendring, whilst Year 9 faced the same incredibly strong teams as they did in their district XV season. Year 8 played magnificently from the off and if it was not the dazzling running of captain Charlie, it was the determined defence shown by Josh and Dan. The boys finished the tournament winners with a 100% record. A fine achievement.

AMAZING TEAM WORK BY THE U-11 TAG RUGBY

An amazing sporting achievement by our Under 11 Tag Rugby team at a local tournament organised by the Colchester Sixth Form College. There were 55 teams at the event, and we won all of our 8 games! There were some great performances by all the pupils including Harry with 10 tries and Kayleigh with 9, but overall it was a real team effort with all players contributing. It was a superb achievement.

11 NETBALL

SENIOR SCHOOL GIRLS NETBALL WEEKEND

Message from Miss Banks

Years 7-10 girls attended a PGL Netball weekend on Friday 11th May 2018.

The trip consisted of a Netball tournament and participation in PGL activities.

I think the girls would agree that the Netball matches were the highlight of the weekend. Both the Year 7 and Year 10 teams came 5th in the tournament. Both teams winning 2 matches, drawing 1 match and losing 3.

The girls nominated a player of the match. The Year 7's players player was Kiera and Year 10's Emma.

The girls’ netball ability and team work improved hugely throughout the tournament and they were great representatives for Colchester High School. I am a very proud teacher and it would be something I would do again in the future.

12 VOLUNTEERING

YEAR 10 GCSE PE PUPI LS OFFICIATE AT THE PANATHLON FINALS

It was so wonderful to see our Year 10 GCSE PE pupils helping out at the Panathlon again this year. Being involved in the greater community and thinking of others is a key part of our school ethos.

And they were so lucky to meet two Paralympics! Steve Brown who was the wheel chair rugby captain at 2012 and Liz Johnson a triple Paralympic medallist from 2008 and 2012.

13 THE GREAT OUTDOORS

In the Summer term, the PE department organised two residential trips to PGL at Beam House, Devon for our Junior Pupils and the Ardeche and Mimosa for the senior pupils. Those who were una- ble to attend have been able to experience similar activities closer to home at Mersea Outdoors.

YEAR 5 & 6 PGL

14 YEAR 7 PGL ARDECHE AND SOUTH OF FRANCE TRIP

Our Year 7’s thoroughly enjoyed their residential trip for 2018 to Segries Farmhouse (Ardeche) and Mimosa (Med) in the South of France. The trip was run by PGL and included:

Ardèche River Adventure A two to three day, 19 mile, canoe descent through the spectacular Ardèche Gorge; return to base at the end of each day.

Mediterranean Watersports

A full watersports programme, students learnt to sail a range of craft including catamarans, windsurfers and sit-on kayaks.
