In total 25 morphometric characteristics were analysed. Morphometric, meristic and phenological features were explored, and analysed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistical methods. Phylogenetic analyses of the studied populations based on genetic markers for cytochrome b, beta actin and BMP were conducted, and genetic diversity was determined, as well as molecular diagnostics for populations. The taxonomic problem related to the population from the Lake Vrana on the Cres Island is also addressed. The obtained results show a distinct separation of some populations based on morphological analyzes, which were verified with phylogenetic analyzes, and final conclusions were made regarding relationships and diversity of the studied populations. The habitat and diet variation of rudd were studied in Lake Banyoles (Spain), an oligotrophic karstic lake dominated by exotic fish species. Rudd were strictly littoral and the diet was based on detritus and plant material. The most important animal prey were the cladocerans Daphnia longispina and Scapholeberis rammneri, amphi- pods and several late stages of nematoceran dipterans. Rudd were more zooplanktivorous in spring and autumn and less in summer. There was also a size-dependent diet shift, from microcrustaceans to macroinvertebrates. The diet of rudd was also distinguished by the importance of plant material and various small neustonic invertebrates, particularly S. rammneri and late stages of nematocerans, showing a strong resource partitioning with other fish species. The degree of herbivory in Lake Banyoles was lower than usual. Introduction or early 20th and since the 1980s are expanding their distribution (Burkhead & Williams, 1991), though Rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) are medium- their interactions with native species remain unknown sized cyprinid fish native to freshwaters of Europe and (Easton et al., 1993).

Regardless, in Serbia this issue is neglected, without appropriate institutional collaboration. To evaluate state of art in Ser- bia, adopted laws and regulations, published scientific papers, concluded and ongoing research projects with emphasis of recorded alien species to date are reviewed. Alien species are defined as allochtonous species in policy documents, while in scientific papers approaches depend on the subject. By now, 346 invasive alien species were recorded in Serbia. Plants present the most numerous group of species, with 172 recorded alien species. Insects are the second large group with 78 species. Apart from them, important are records of cyanobacteria and fungi, while for the first time are summarized data about alien and potentially invasive bird species. Aqauatic ecosystems are the most vurn- eralbe and threatened by spread of invasive alien species in Serbia, with more than 80 aqatic alien organisms.

Abstract Background: Paedocypris, a highly developmentally truncated fish from peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia, comprises the world's smallest vertebrate. Although clearly a cyprinid fish, a hypothesis about its phylogenetic position among the subfamilies of this largest teleost family, with over 2400 species, does not exist.

  • The Phylogenetic Relationships and Species Richness of Host-Specific Dactylogyrus Parasites Shaped by the Biogeography of Balkan
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The phylogenetic relationships and species richness of host-specifc Dactylogyrus parasites shaped Received: 23 February 2018 Accepted: 17 August 2018 by the biogeography of Balkan Published: xx xx xxxx cyprinids Michal Benovics1, Yves Desdevises2, Jasna Vukić3, Radek Šanda4 & Andrea Šimková1 Parasites exhibiting a high degree of host specifcity are expected to be intimately associated with their hosts. Therefore, the evolution of host-specifc parasites is at least partially shaped by the evolutionary history and distribution of such hosts. Gill ectoparasites of Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) are specifc to cyprinid fsh. In the present study, we investigated the evolutionary history of 47 Dactylogyrus species from the Balkan Peninsula, the Mediteranean region exhibiting the highest cyprinid diversity in Europe, and from central European cyprinids. Phylogenetic analyses revealed four well-supported clades of endemic and non-endemic Dactylogyrus spp. with four basal taxa. Endemic cyprinids with a limited distribution range were parasitized by endemic Dactylogyrus species, but some of them shared several Dactylogyrus species with central European cyprinids. Species delimitation analyses based on molecular data suggest that Dactylogyrus diversity is higher than that defned from morphology. Some endemic cyprinid species harboured Dactylogyrus species of diferent origins, this probably resulting from multiple host switching. Our results support the view that the evolution of Dactylogyrus in the Balkans has been infuenced not only by the historical dispersion and distribution of their cyprinid hosts, but also by recent contacts of non-native cyprinid species with endemic cyprinid fauna in this region. Te species richness of parasitic taxa and their distribution in host species is usually closely related to the history, dispersion and diversity of their hosts1–3.

Geiger Adding nuclear rhodopsin data where mitochondrial COI indicates discrepancies – can this marker help to explain conflicts in cyprinids? DOI 10.1515/dna-2015-0020 or haplotype sharing (12 species pairs) with presumed Received February 27, 2015; accepted October 1, 2015 introgression based on mtCOI data. We aimed to test Abstract: DNA barcoding is a fast and reliable tool for the utility of the nuclear rhodopsin marker to uncover species identification, and has been successfully applied reasons for the high similarity and haplotype sharing in to a wide range of freshwater fishes. The limitations these different groups. The included labeonine species reported were mainly attributed to effects of geographic belonging to Crossocheilus, Hemigrammocapoeta, scale, taxon-sampling, incomplete lineage sorting, or Tylognathus and Typhlogarra were found to be nested mitochondrial introgression. However, the metrics for within the genus Garra based on mtCOI. This specific the success of assigning unknown samples to species or taxonomic uncertainty was also addressed by the use genera also depend on a suited taxonomic framework. of the additional nuclear marker. As a measure of the A simultaneous use of the mitochondrial COI and the delineation success we computed barcode gaps, which nuclear RHO gene turned out to be advantageous for were present in 75% of the species based on mtCOI, but the barcode efficiency in a few previous studies. Here, in only 39% based on nuclear rhodopsin sequences.
