    Abtalk November 2009 News from Abthorpe November 2009 AFFORDABLE HOUSING About 3 years ago, a survey was carried out by South Northants Council to determine if there was a need for affordable housing in the village. Affordable housing is designed to allow people with strong connections to the village, e.g. they have grown up here, to continue to live in the village once they need their own home. The survey showed the need for only a couple of houses, too small to justify any development. However, there are adjacent villages with similar requirements, so a scheme has been drawn up where one development will serve the needs of Wappenham, Bradden and Slapton in addition to Abthorpe. Initially sites in Wappenham were examined, but none was found to be suitable. Slapton and Bradden were too small but a site in Brackley Lane has now been identified for possible development. This is the un-used field opposite the garages. It is, of course, outside the village envelope so is not available for commercial development. The current owner would be paid a price above agricultural land but well below housing land, a condition which is essential to make the housing affordable. Although the field extends behind the existing houses in Brackley Lane, the development will not use that part of the field. This Local Plan for South Northants builds on the West Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy, by adding local detail including looking at the sustainability of our villages and providing a settlement hierarchy. The plan also reviews and reinstates confines for all the main villages across the District, to ensure they can grow in an appropriate way and proper scale. The Plan contains a series of new policies to guide the construction of all types of housing, such as starter homes, self-build and homes for older people to ensure greater housing choice is provided for all local residents. We want to support small scale appropriate local housing growth in accordance with the NPPF, in addition to the large housing sites that are under construction at Radstone Fields, Brackley, Towcester South and the edge of Northampton, This Plan sets out how. As a council we recognise that a strong economy is at the heart of our quality of life and the policies in the plan seek to retain the employment land we have as well as to increase the supply of new employment sites.

A period of not less than six weeks has expired since the receipt of those recommendations. The Electoral Commission have decided to give effect, with one modification, to those recommendations. Accordingly, the Electoral Commission, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 17(d) and 26(e) of the 1992 Act, make the following Order: Citation and commencement 1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the District of South Northamptonshire (Electoral Changes) Order 2006. INTRODUCTION Given the wide range of specialist research areas, the enormous complexity of understanding enabled by the wide range of documentary evidence and what, compared to all earlier periods, can in this context be considered an embarrassment of data for the medieval period, it is impossible to review all aspects of the archaeology of the county in a single paper. It is therefore more important to identify where archaeology may be used, in collaboration as appropriate with documentary sources, to advance understanding in fundamental ways. It is particularly important, given the wide range of documentary evidence available that the potential of that evidence is comprehensively assessed before the gaps requiring archaeological investigation can be defined. The archaeological evidence for this paper is largely drawn from a trawl of the Sites & Monuments Record (SMR) but the data currently available within the SMR is not adequate for the mapping and assessment of the medieval landscape. Despite the extensive data collection by the RCHM in the 1970s and 1980s there is still a lack of consistent information on the vast majority of monuments in most monument classes. The exceptions are such things as fishpond which have major earthwork remains. The SMR is very poor on monuments within existing settlements. For most medieval monument classes, such as mill, manor and grange there are few records on the SMR, because the vast majority which existed are known, if at all, from documentary not archaeological sources.
