  • Where Stars Are Born and Legends Are Made™
Where Stars are Born and Legends are Made™ The Apollo Theater Study Guide is published by the Education Program of the Apollo Theater in New York, NY | Volume 2, Issue 1, November 2010 If the Apollo Theater could talk, imagine the stories it could tell. It The has witnessed a lot of history, and seen a century’s worth of excitement. The theater itself has stood proudly on 125th Street since 1914, when it started life as a burlesque house for whites only, Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater. Dancers in skimpy costumes stripped down to flesh-colored leotards, and comics told bawdy jokes – that is, until then New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia made the decision to close down burlesque houses all over the city. When the doors of the burlesque theaters were padlocked, the building was sold. By S ul the time it reopened in 1934, a new name proclaimed itself from the marquee: the 125th Street Apollo Theatre. From the start, the Apollo was beloved by Harlemites, and immediately of became an integral part of Harlem life. When the Apollo first opened, Harlem boasted a lot of theaters and clubs. But many didn’t admit black audiences. Though the musicians who played in the clubs were black, the audiences were often white; the country still had a lot to American learn about integration. But the Apollo didn’t play primarily to whites. As soon as it opened its doors, black residents of Harlem streamed in themselves to enjoy the show. In the early years, the Apollo presented acts in a revue format, with a variety of acts on each bill.

Sir! “All those people who organized clubs for nothing and paid you out of their own pocket, and fed you and put you on the train the next morning, and put you to bed when you were drunk! What [the government is] doing, is taking notice of the fact that something’s going on for the last more than 40 years. It’s called the folk revival. They’ve ignored it for that long. And someone has suddenly taken notice, and that’s okay. A bit of profile isn’t gonna hurt us — and I say us, the plural, for the folk scene — isn’t gonna hurt us at all.” In the same year as Carthy’s moment of recognition, something happened that did hurt the folk scene. Lal Waterson, Carthy’s sister-in- law, bandmate, near neighbor and close friend, died of cancer.

  • The Matthews Baartmans Conspiracy Singer Songwriter Iain Matthews
The Matthews Baartmans Conspiracy Singer songwriter Iain Matthews and guitarist/singer songwriter/producer BJ Baartmans met in 2003, shortly after the former had relocated to the south of Holland. BJ was accompanying touring American singer songwriter, Eugene Ruffolo in a local music cafe and the two were introduced after the show. A mutual respect for each other’s talents developed and they have been playing and recording together more or less since then. Mostly in the all Dutch lineup of Matthews Southern Comfort, which they formed together in 2005. Releasing three albums and touring extensively throughout Europe. It's a natural habitat for both musicians who each have a long and rich history in the music world, as a solo act or bandmember: Matthews worked with ao Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Plainsong, More Than A Song. Baartmans worked with a long list of Dutch and international acts like Oh Susanna, Jeff Finlin, David Corley. Amy Speace, Cara Luft [ distant chatter] When last years pandemic forced all performers off the road, the two began writing together in earnest and made plans to record and tour as a duo once curfews were lifted. Calling themselves ‘The Matthews Baartmans conspiracy’, a year and half and seventeen tunes later, their new album titled Distant Chatter and it’s accompanying EP Close Call will be available from September 15, 2021. It's a collection of rootsy americana songs with an adventurous, gritty and colorful side to it. Intruiging harmonies and ear catching hooklines. Matthews and Baartmans call it “an album that had no other option than to be made”.

Topic Records 80th Anniversary Start time: 8pm Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes with interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston discusses the history behind the world’s oldest independent label ahead of this collaborative performance. When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..
