Titus 2:7 "…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:14 "Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work." Titus 3:1 "The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works." Titus 3:14 "One of the problems in the Cretan church is that they had assimilated their ideas about Jesus, the Christian God, to their ideas about their Greek gods…specifically Zeus, their chief god.     SESSION SIX New Testament Study Overview: What God has done in the Old Testament He continues to do in the New. God began a pattern for fund- ing workers that carries right on through the New Testament and gives us a model for today. In this session we will discuss the numerous instances of partnership and its spiritual fruit, focusing in on Paul’s relationship with his partners. The goal of this teaching is to show that there is a significant culture of partnership in the New Testament. New Testament perspective of laboring—with partnership The New Testament is a continuation of the unfolding story of the restoration of all things. God stewards His own purpose through the voluntary agreement of His people. His approach is the same; the giving of the saints is His preferred way of advancing His kingdom.     THROUGH THE BIBLE TITUS 1-3 Years ago Leslie Flynn wrote a book entitled, “Great Church Fights.” He documented cases of just how contentious and hostile church members can become. Ask any pastor who’s been around the block a time or two, and he’ll tell you that ministry is a contact sport! It’s sad when the Church becomes a cage fight. Yet Titus, not just Leslie Flynn, could’ve written a book entitled, “Great Church Fights.” He was sent by Paul to pastor an ornery church on the island of Crete. In describing the Cretans in 1:12, Paul quotes a local author who characterized his own people as, “always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons…” - not very flattering… And Titus had been asked to pastor the Cretan church. Obviously, a church full of very cranky people. Here’s the question that prompted Paul’s letter to Titus, “how do you oversee rambunctious people?” The book of Titus expresses one certainty - to deal with difficult people strong leadership is essential! In three chapters Paul condenses the instructions he communicated in his first letter to Timothy. He provides Titus a crash course in effective spiritual leadership… Verse 1 is the author’s intro, “Paul, a bondservant of God...” Slavery in Israel was used to pay off a person’s debts. Often, a slave ended up serving a kind and benevolent master, and 1 lived a better life in his master’s house than he could ever achieve on his own. In response, sometimes these freed slaves would forego their liberty to remain in the master’s household.

    Ephesians 6:21-24 Ephesians 6:21 – “So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything.” 1. Tychicus a. Tychicus was from the province of Asia (Acts ) b. Tychicus may have been from Ephesus in Asia Minor, but he is not mentioned in Luke’s account of Ephesus in Acts 19 and is not mentioned in the account of the sea voyage to Rome. c. Since Tychicus is in Rome around 61-62 AD while Paul is living under house arrest in Rome (60-62 AD) it would appear that Tychicus had traveled from Ephesus (or, Asia Minor) to Rome to see Paul. d. Tychicus is now returning to Ephesus and then to Colossae with these three letters (maybe, four letters or more): i. Ephesians ii. Colossae (Col. 4:7) iii. Philemon iv. (Laodicea, Col. 4:16) e. Tychicus will (has been) representing Paul in Asia Minor in Ephesus, Colossae and the other churches. It is likely that the Ephesian letter is a circular letter. f. After this: i. Tychicus is with Paul in Corinth when Paul writes Titus in Crete. Tychicus is mentioned as a possible replacement (along with Artemas) in Crete for Titus - Titus 3:12 – “When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.” ii. Tychicus had been with Paul in Rome during his second and final imprisonment in 67 AD before winter when Paul writes Timothy in Ephesus in 2 Timothy 4:12 – “Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.” g.

(2 Cor. 13:11; Phil. 4:8; 1 Thess. 4:1; 2 Thess. 3:1). 2) It does not have that meaning in Philippians 3:1, but denotes some kind of shift in his thought. PHI 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. 3) It could have the meaning of “henceforth” [from now on] as in Galatians 6:17. GAL 6:17 From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. b. “be strong” is the passive imperative of “endunamoo” [en doo nah mah oh] and the passive means “be you empowered, to be made strong.” “Be strong” is the result of one trusting in the Lord. c. “in the Lord” - Lit “in Lord.” “Lord” refers to Jesus Christ.
