The Primate of the Orthodox Church in America is His Beatitude, The Most-Blessed Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of All America and Canada. Our Bishop is His Grace, the Right Reverend , Bishop of Dallas and the South, and the Bulgarian Diocese. A Topical Study of the Canonical Literature of the Orthodox Church will continue on Sunday, November 13 at the Arnold's (6:00pm). This part of our Tradition guides who we are as the Church, our life in the Church, as well as our reconciliation when we find ourselves apart from the Church.

The focus of the eighth week of Church School will be the Song of Three Holy Youths. Patrick will lead the Adult class while the school age children are meeting.

We are grateful for Fr. Mark Hodal who is presiding today at the Holy Altar. Working together with Deacon Patrick, the priestly and pastoral needs of our parish will be meet while Fr. David is taking vacation. Fr. Mark can be reached at (804)892-0800, and Deacon Patrick at (859)221-1319.

Fr. David has been given a blessing to be away from the Holy Altar for the two weekends of October 22/23 and October 29/30, and will be on a leave of absence for vacation from Monday, October 17 until Sunday, November 6 (time change Sunday). Fr. Mark and Fr. Deacon Patrick will provide the required weekend services, and will be available for pastoral or priestly support while Fr. David is away.

There will not be home school co-op, or after school music workshops during the weeks of October 17-21, October 24-28, and October 31-November 4. All these ministries will return to the regular schedule the week of November 7. The weekday services will be reduced to Wednesday and Friday evening Small Compline. There will still be Catechism Wednesday evening following Compline.

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 13. Church School will be abbreviated that Sunday and will begin immediately after the veneration of the Cross, allowing adults to begin serving a “meaty pot-luck” before the Nativity Fast begins that week. The Church School students will eat after they complete their abbreviated lesson. The Annual Meeting will begin at 12:30, and we will hear reports, approve our operating budget for 2017, appoint the Parish Council, Audit Committee, Teller Committee, Grounds Committee, DOS Assembly Delegates, and attend to any other new business. Please make plans to attend this very important meeting, since we need to obtain a quorum of our “voting members” in order to hold the meeting. Child care volunteers needed.

We will be blessed to host His Grace, Bishop Alexander over the Eve of Nativity. He will celebrate the Divine Liturgy (St. ) on Saturday, December 24, and we will greet him at 9:00am. The typical services for Nativity are changed by the Typikon when Nativity falls on a Sunday. We will keep the “Strict Fast” for Saturday by having a “dry eating” pot-luck coffee hour following the Divine Liturgy. This means we will have shell fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, dry fruits and nuts, breads, honey, and of course, coffee. We will offer the Vigil that Saturday evening (Compline/Matins at 7:00pm) and the Divine Liturgy (St. Basil) on Sunday morning (9:00am). His Grace will be at St. Andrew's on Sunday.

The Nativity Fast begins on November 15. While we may exercise economia on the day of Thanksgiving, the 40 days before the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord is treated as a purposeful period of preparation. Preparing ourselves by self-denial and repentance, we honor the eternal significance of our God taking on the limitations of our humanity, and we faithfully prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord in glory. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30 (at the Divine Liturgy)

Tone 2 (Resurrection) When Thou didst descend to death, O Life immortal, Thou didst slay hell with the splendor of Thy Godhead. And when from the depths Thou didst raise the dead, all the powers of heaven cried out:// “O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to Thee!”

Tone 4 Troparion (Hieromarty Zenóbius and his sister Zenobía) As brother and sister united in godliness together you struggled in contest Zenóbius and Zenobía. Ye received incorruptible crowns and unending glory and shine forth with the grace of healing upon those in the world.

Tone 2 (Resurrection) Hell became afraid, O almighty Savior, seeing the miracle of Thy Resurrection from the tomb! The dead arose! Creation, with Adam, beheld this and rejoiced with Thee,// and the world, my Savior, praises Thee forever.

Tone 8 Kontakion (Hieromarty Zenóbius and his sister Zenobía) Let us honor with inspired hymns the two martyrs for truth: the preachers of true devotion, Zenóbius and Zenobía; as brother and sister they lived and suffered together// and through martyrdom received their incorruptible crowns.

Tone 2 Prokeimenon The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. (Ps 117/118:4) v: The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over to death. (Ps 117/118:18)

Epistle 2 Corinthians 11:31-12:9 Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Tone 2 v: May the Lord hear thee in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect thee! (Ps 19/20:1) v: Save the King, O Lord, and hear us on the day we call! (Ps 19/20:9)

Gospel Luke 8:26-39

Communion Hymn Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest! (Ps 148:1) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Glory to Thee, O Lord, Glory to Thee!

Only those who are baptized Orthodox Christians making preparation by fasting and a recent confession should approach to receive Holy Communion. Confession (the Mystery of Repentance) is always available, only needing communicate one's need with the priest and making arrangement to participate in this Holy Mystery. It is always assumed that following the Vigil or Great Vespers (or other services at the Church during the week) time is available for those prepared to offer their confession. Again, one only need ask so that it may be done. When a second priest is serving on Sunday morning, their may be time before or at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, but this must not be assumed to be available, but communicated with the priest. It is almost always impossible for a single priest to provide time for confessions on Sunday morning without making effort to amend his routine for the traditional prayers, which He may be willing and able to do, but this should not be assumed.
