BANNED BOOKS WEEK: CELEBRATING THE FREEDOM TO READ What do The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, Ulysses, Animal Farm, Gone with the Wind, Of Mice and Men, and the Harry Potter series have in common? You guessed it; this is a very small list of books that have been challenged or banned. There were 311 challenges to books in 2014 alone!

Why does this matter? According to the American Library Association Mon-Thurs 7 am– 2 am website: “Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open Friday 7 am– 8 pm access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United Saturday 10 am– 5 pm States.” This year, Banned Books Week is September 27-October 3. Sunday 9 am– 2 am Stay tuned to the library’s website for Banned Books Week events!
