Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction An Indian in Washington India and America are located on opposite sides of the earth; therefore it is natural for America to think that we walk upside down, and for us to think that Americans walk upside down. —Pandita Ramabai, The Peoples of the United States (1889) The Sufferance of the Foreigner n late September 1905, the Indian nationalist Lajpat Rai had gathered with a group of tourists in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, when a guide directed Itheir attention to the works of art surrounding them. Plastered on the ceil- ing was The Apotheosis of Washington, a fresco featuring the first U.S. presi- dent on a celestial throne, flanked on each side by figures from classical Greco-Roman and nouveau American mythology (Figure I.1). Just below, The Frieze of American History encircled the rotunda with its selective time- line, and at eye level were enormous neoclassical canvases depicting scenes from the American Revolution and the conquest of the Americas. From ceil- ing to floor, the artwork of the Capitol presented a set of interwoven images that moved seamlessly from the mythological to the historical, containing within it, it would seem, a visual argument: The United States was the heir apparent of Western empire. At the dawn of the new century, as America extended its imperial reach across the globe, who would have thought to see otherwise? In Washington, DC, during a three-week tour of the East Coast, Lajpat Rai discussed his visit in an editorial for the Panjabee, an English-language weekly based out of Lahore. -

The second chapterlooks at the prehistory of Indian culture to see the ways in which Indianpeoples learned to exploit the land. The excavations ofan Indian camp site at Green Point, Michigan, are described, including discussionof the dig, findings, and changes in Indian life from S00-1700A.D. Chapter three recounts Indian-white relations during 1600-1900 inorder to explore what happened when a stone-age culture facedan acquisitive white culture that was more highly developed and hadmore resources. The Iroquois Indians in the northeastserve as an example of how Indian life patterns were destroyed by European, occupationof America. The last chapter examines the Indian-whitecontact and the way it has caused recent problems for Indians. -

In 1885 Gibran emigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States, where they settled in the large Syrian and Lebanese community in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1904 Gibran began publishing articles in an Arabic-language newspaper and also had his first public exhibit of his drawings, which were championed by the Boston photographer Fred Holland Day. -

Q&A: Brooklyn Artist Aakash Nihalani Talks Designing Mixtape Covers For Das Racist and His New Show, Overlap, Opening at Bose Pacia This Thursday By Zach Baron published: Mon., Nov. 1 2010 @ 12:40PM All images courtesy Bose Pacia The young, Queens-born tape artist Aakash Nihalani did the geometrically stoned cover for Das Racist's Shut Up, Dude mixtape. He's had his distinctive, oddly placed, brightly colored tape installations ripped off by everybody from other street artists to Vampire Weekend. And he's got a new, Jeff Koons-pranking solo show up this Thursday at Dumbo gallery Bose Pacia, entitled Overlap. Das Racist, of course, are playing the afterparty at 17 Frost. In advance of Nihalani's solo debut at the gallery, we chatted a bit about the upcoming show and his brushes with various local musicians, both friendly and otherwise. When last we spoke, I think, it was about whether you'd done the art for Vampire Weekend's "Cousins" video. You hadn't, but you did point me to someone who said "Vampire Weekend totally ripped him off (poorly) without consent or compensation." Did they ever reach out to make it right? Is that video still a sore spot? Nah, they never reached out. I wouldn't be so bummed if they didn't do such a poor imitation. But I kinda can't blame the band as much as the director who 'came up' with the idea for the video. Come to think of it, your aesthetic seems like it's particularly prone to other people borrowing it--is that a source of pain for you? Want to name any other names of people who've ripped you off while we're here? Sometimes it gets weird to see my style copied, but I think it's a benefit to have my stuff be so relatable. -

Fahrenthold Center for Middle Eastern Studies, University of California, Berkeley, California, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract For half a million ‘Syrian’ Ottoman subjects living outside the empire, the First World War initiated a massive political rift with Istanbul. Beginning in 1916, Syrian and Lebanese emigrants from both North and South America sought to enlist, recruit, and conscript immigrant men into the militaries of the Entente. Employing press items, correspondence, and memoirs written by émigré recruiters during the war, this article reconstructs the transnational networks that facilitated the voluntary enlistment of an estimated 10,000 Syrian emigrants into the armies of the Entente, particularly the United States Army after 1917. As Ottoman nationals, many Syrian recruits used this as a practical means of obtaining American citizen- ship and shedding their legal ties to Istanbul. Émigré recruiters folded their military service into broader goals for ‘Syrian’ and ‘Lebanese’ national liberation under the auspices of American political support. 1 Heritage Languages Among South Asian Americans Bryn Mawr College Spring 2014 Karuna Doraiswamy Abstract* This thesis explores second generation South Asian Americans' relationships with their heritage languages; specifically, the ways in which these relationships might challenge current convention regarding the categorization of heritage and non-heritage learners along a linear spectrum. This thesis also examines the extent to which the decision to (re)leam one's heritage language might be considered a necessary step to earning cultural legitimacy in the diasporic community, a symbolic reclamation of one's history, or even a performative act intended to better match oneself to the dominant perception of what it means to be South Asian. 1 Introduction This section explains basic issues regarding heritage languages in general, including current definitional debates, research on childhood interaction with heritage languages, and the second generation's attitude toward their ancestral language and culture. 1.1 Defining heritage language learners English has long been the dominant language spoken in the United States, to the detriment of many indigenous and immigrant language communities.
