Keyes Metcalf and the Founding of The Harvard Library Bulletin Dennis Carrigan In Random Recollections of an Anachronism, the first volume of his autobiography, Keyes Metcalf has told how he came to head the Harvard Library. In 1913 he had joined the New York Public Library, and had expected to work there until retirement. One day early in 1936, however, he was summoned to the office of his superior, Harry Miller Lydenberg, and there introduced to James Bryant Conant, the President of Harvard, who was in New York to discuss with Mr. Lydenberg a candidate to be Librarian of Harvard College, a position that was expected to lead to that of Director of the University Library. -

Course Abstract: Evolution of the Universe, from its beginning in a cosmic expansion to the emergence of life on Earth and possibly other planets. Big-bang cosmology, origin and evolution of galaxies, stars, planets, life, and society. Scientific discussion of Nature writ large, from quarks to quasars, microbes to minds. Materials largely descriptive, based on insights from physics, astronomy, geology, chemistry, biology, and anthropology. Course Description: This broad survey course combines the essential ingredients of astrophysics and biochemistry to create an interdisciplinary synthesis called “cosmic evolution." Directed mainly toward non-science students, the course addresses, from a scientific viewpoint, some of the time-honored philosophical issues including who we are, whence we've come, and how we fit into cosmic scheme things. Our primary objective is to gain an appreciation for the origin of matter and the origin of life, while seeking unification throughout the natural sciences. The course divides into three segments: • Part I (~10% of the course) introduces some basic concepts, notably those scientific principles needed for the remainder of the course. • Part II (~40% the course) is heavily astronomical, using the concept of space to describe the many varied objects populating the Universe, from nearby planets to distant galaxies; this spatial theme serves as an inventory, explicating known material systems throughout the cosmos. -

Press Release Harvard Art Museums’ Renovated and Expanded Facility Opens November 16, 2014 New home provides greater access to the collections, among the nation’s largest and most renowned, for students, faculty, scholars, and the public The Harvard Art Museums (October 25, 2014). Photo: Peter Vanderwarker. Cambridge, MA March 11, 2014 (updated November 5, 2014) The Harvard Art Museums—comprising the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum—open their new Renzo Piano Building Workshop–designed facility to the public on November 16, 2014. The renovation and expansion of the museums’ landmark building at 32 Quincy Street in Cambridge brings the three museums and their collections together under one roof for the first time, inviting students, faculty, scholars, and the public into one of the world’s great institutions for arts scholarship and research. In the Harvard Art Museums’ new home, visitors are able to explore new research connected to the objects on display and the ideas they generate in the galleries; gain a glimpse of leading conservators at work; and in the unique Art Study Center, have hands-on experiences with a wide range of objects from the collections. “We are eagerly anticipating the opening of the new Harvard Art Museums facility,” said Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust. “Renzo Piano has designed a building that is as beautiful as the works of art it will house and as thoughtful as the people who will work and learn within it. It will expand the ways in which we use art and art-making as part of the curriculum, and it will invite our neighbors and visitors to enjoy some of the university’s unparalleled treasures.” The design for the new Harvard Art Museums creates new resources for study, teaching, exhibition, and conservation. -

Harvard Freecycling
Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts Waste Reduction - Freecycling SCHOOL Founded in 1636, Harvard University is a private research institution made up of 10 principal academic units - nine faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Approximately 1,900 faculty teach a student body made up of 6,700 undergraduates and more than 12,000 graduate and professional students. ABSTRACT One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. This is the mantra that led to the birth of Freecycling - the act of giving away unwanted items at no cost. The online Freecycle Network™ began in 2003 in Tucson, AZ, and has since spread to over 85 countries (visit: www.freecycle.org for more information about this online network). The basic concept involves posting legal and appropriate unwanted items (for free), and allowing interested individuals to contact the original owner in order to complete the transfer. Freecycling is a great way to reduce environmental impact through the diversion of waste that otherwise could have ended up incinerated or in a landfill, and it also results in decreased demands on new manufacturing processes. Freecycling events at Harvard began as the result of an eager Harvard Medical School (HMS) staff member who noticed an opportunity both to conserve resources and to save money by re-using supplies that are frequently purchased in bulk – and oftentimes end up unused or unwanted. At the first Freecycling supply swap at Harvard Medical School, over 1000 items were freecycled. Other “eco champions” at Harvard followed suit and started Freecycling supply swaps at their own schools across campus. Having teamed up with Harvard’s Office for Sustainability in order to coordinate and publicize school-wide supply swap events, a total of eight Freecycling events have been held across campus as of June, 2009.
