“Zen Has No Morals!” - The Latent Potential for Corruption and Abuse in Zen Buddhism, as Exemplified by Two Recent Cases by Christopher Hamacher Paper presented on 7 July 2012 at the International Cultic Studies Association's annual conference in Montreal, Canada. Christopher Hamacher graduated in law from the Université de Montréal in 1994. He has practiced Zen Buddhism in Japan, America and Europe since 1999 and run his own Zen meditation group since 2006. He currently works as a legal translator in Munich, Germany. INTRODUCTION Zen Buddhism was long considered by many practitioners to be immune from the scandals that occasionally affect other religious sects. Zen’s iconoclastic approach, based solely on the individual’s own meditation experience, was seen as a healthy counterpoint to the more theistic and moralistic world-views, whose leading proponents often privately flouted the very moral codes that they preached. The unspoken assumption in Zen has always been that the meditation alone naturally freed the accomplished practitioner from life's moral quandaries, without the need for rigid rules of conduct imposed from above. -
Zen War Stories
ZEN WAR STORIES Following the critically acclaimed Zen at War (1997), Brian Daizen Victoria here explores the intimate relationship between Japanese institutional Buddhism and militarism during the Second World War. Victoria reveals for the first time, through examination of the wartime writings of the Japanese military itself, that the Zen school’s view of life and death was deliberately incorporated into the military’s programme of ‘spiritual education’ in order to develop a fanatical military spirit in both soldiers and civilians. Furthermore, it is shown that D. T. Suzuki, the most famous exponent of Zen in the West, was a wartime proponent of this Zen-inspired viewpoint which enabled Japanese soldiers to leave for the battlefield already resigned to death. Victoria takes us on to the naval battlefield in the company of warrior-monk and Rinzai Zen Master Nakajima Genjō. We view the war in China through the eyes of a Buddhist military chaplain. The book also examines the relationship to Buddhism of Japan’s seven class-A war criminals, hung by the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal in 1948. A highly controversial study, this book will be of interest not only to those studying the history of the period, but also to anyone concerned with the perennial question of the ‘proper’ relationship between religion and state. The Way of Zazen Rindô Fujimoto rôshi Ce texte est l'un des premiers (peut-être même le tout premier) manuels de méditation à avoir été publié en langue anglaise. Il s'agit de la traduction d'un opuscule, à l'origine une conférence donnée par le maître Sôtô Rindô Fujimoto. Le texte fut publié en 1966 par Elsie P. Mitchell (de l'Association Bouddhiste de Cambridge) qui avait reçu, quatre ans plus tôt au Japon, les voeux bouddhistes de Fujimoto. Rindô Fujimoto, né en 1894, pratiqua notamment sous la direction de Daiun Sôgaku Harada (1870-1961), le maître Sôtô qui intégra la pratique des kôan, pour revenir par la suite à la pratique, plus orthodoxe, du "juste s'asseoir" (shikantaza). Shikai Zuiko o-sensei and Nathan Fushin Comeau Article 1: Guan Yin Rupa As you enter the front door of the Monastery you may have noticed a white porcelain figure nearly two feet tall standing on the shelf to the left. Who is she? Guan Yin, Gwaneum, Kanzeon, are some of the names she holds from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese roots. The object is called a "rupa" in Sanskrit, which means "form" and in this case a statue that has the form of a representation of a quality which humans hold dear: compassion. I bought this 20th century rupa shortly after we established a small temple, Zazen-ji, on Somerset West. This particular representation bears a definite resemblance to Ming dynasty presentations of "One Who Hears the Cries of the World". Guan Yin, Gwaneum, Kanzeon seems to have sprung from the Indian representation of the qualities of compassion and warmth portrayed under another name; Avalokitesvara. The name means "looking down on and hearing the sounds of lamentation". Some say that Guan Yin is the female version of Avalokitesvara. Some say that Guan Yin or, in Japan, Kannon or Kanzeon, and Avalokitesvara are the same and the differences in appearance are the visibles expression of different influences from different cultures and different Buddhist schools, and perhaps even the influence of Christianity's madonna. Dann kniet derJikijitsu sich vor den –Zendo-Altar und rezitiert das Mantra „Enmei Jiku Kannon Gyo“ (11 x). Am Ende Gasho-Teito im Stehen vor dem Altar. Dann geht er an seinen Platz macht dort nochmals Gasho-Teito und knien zum Tee. 2. Handaikan: Sarei Handhaltungen: Im Sitzen Hände vor dem Hara, im Stehen und Gehen vor Solarplexus. Fowler Date Approved: 5 October 2018 ii Abstract This dissertation investigates a sculptural group of Enma and his entourage that was once enshrined in an Enma hall located within the Kyoto temple Rokuharamitsuji precinct, and hopes to highlight the role that significant yet understudied sculptures played in the development of the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings in premodern Japan. Rokuharamitsuji is of great importance to study the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings not only for its rare early sculptures of Enma and his two assistants created in the thirteenth century when the cult began to flourish in Japan, but also for the later addition of a seventeenth-century Datsueba sculpture, which reveals the evolution of the cult through its incorporation of Japanese popular belief. This study examines how the Rokuharamitsuji sculptural group presented images of hell within a designated space and conveyed messages of salvation to their beholders, responding to the environs of the salvation- oriented temple.
