Ice Breaker

As part of the tournament ice breaker Kudzai Betani participated in a sour gum chewing competition which she won and was awarded with a portrait of herself.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, our invited guests, Mom and Dad. The year 2019 began with so much promise and room for improvement and indeed, God has been faithful to us as the Gateway commu- nity as so far we have seen many great achievements. For me, the biggest and most memorable of these in my year as school Captain was Gateway's recommendation for accreditation to the Association of Christian Schools International or better known as ACSI, which saw rapid and drastic developments in the school to meet and match the standard of the organization. Soon, Gateway will be recognized internationally as a school that stands for Jesus Christ.

Academically, Gateway offers high quality international education which is reflected by the results produced by our students. For the 2018 exam session, we had over 8 students with over 12 points for their AS and A level and 9 students with over 6As in the IGCSE exams. The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement held a Science Olympiad in which 2 of our upper 6 students; Shamiso Zimunya and Karen Mapi- ka made it into the top 100 out of 50000 students in the SADC region who took part and I am proud to say Karen Mapika came first out of all the 50000 students and received a laptop prize. For all these achievements we commend our diligent and hard- working staff for their continuous input in our lives.

Not only have we excelled on the Academic front, but also on the sporting field. Our various sporting teams took part in many fixtures and displayed their God given talents, with a resounding number being selected into national teams. The Career Preparation Program (CPP) and Takuranashe (TNS) classes take partin sporting activities such as golf, tag rugby, Bosia, Bocchi and swimming and they have opportunities to com- pete with other schools. They are best represented by our own school's walking calendar and sport commen- tator, Tichafara Hapanyengwe who knows each and every fixture that is to come in the calendar and those

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth , Ecclesiastes 12:1 2019, Issue 4 Equipping students to reach their full potential Page 9 SPEECH NIGHT—CAPTAIN’S SPEECH that have already passed. He also knows all the results of all fixtures played whether he's present or not and I can assure you right now that he will probably remember last year’s speech night date and exactly what took place.

Gateway has been my home for the past 6 years and has moulded me into a mature young man. When I first joined the school in form 1, I was very socially awkward and quiet. Actually, at some point if someone said, “hie,” I would reply, “I'm fine thanks how are you.” I will gladly say that I no longer respond like that and as the years have gone by I have developed friendships that helped me grow and become more open. My High school life has not always been roses and daisies, I have had my fair share of failures and disappointing test scores. I’m sure many students present would agree that a U in High school is no uncommon phenomenon and It would be in those moments when the whole class has failed a Math Test and Mrs Ratisai would take a whole double lesson to calculate how much our parents have paid from Form 1 through to Upper six and you would really ask yourself why you slept for 10 hours rather than 6, or when you lose a match against the one team you expected to win against and Mr Chirume asks you if the other team was better than you, then you reply with your heads down saying no but clearly the score board says otherwise. It’s moments like these that you look back to and laugh.

Thank you Mom for making the decision to enrol me at this great institution and I appreciate all the support and sacrifices you've given me despite all criticism and hardships we’ve been through. Actually, this day brings so much nostalgia to last year and the days that led up to speech night. I remember seeing my mother’s tears when my name was announced because she never expected that I would be chosen as Captain, truth be told neither did I. And dad, I guess I can safely say I know no other man who is skilled in the art of using a belt on his child, but I can never forget the lessons you’ve taught me time and time again. They have brought me this far and I will always cherish them. I thank you both for your love. ‘A man is only as Great as the Greatness of his ambition.’ To the incoming leaders, my advice is to dream big for Gateway and achieve big for Gateway. Lead the school in humility and ‘trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5 -6

2019 has been a memorable year for me as Captain, because each and every one of you was here to make the journey precious. To my fellow Upper sixes, gentleman no more 0.5 (hair length) and ladies no more 40 cm braids, and most importantly no more 4 days of staying at school for sports. We’ve run our race and we have a vision of the finish line so let us finish strong and earn the prize. I really can't believe we are almost there. I am so proud of the responsible men and women we all have become. You are finally ready to face the real world. So, remember now though, that success is rent that's due each and every single day, so make sure you are ready to pay up your bills. Always remember that Blood, Sweat, Respect. First two you give and the third one you earn. May God Bless you all.
