Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, our invited guests, Mom and Dad. The year 2019 began with so much promise and room for improvement and indeed, God has been faithful to us as the Gateway commu- nity as so far we have seen many great achievements. For me, the biggest and most memorable of these in my year as school Captain was Gateway's recommendation for accreditation to the Association of Christian Schools International or better known as ACSI, which saw rapid and drastic developments in the school to meet and match the standard of the organization. Soon, Gateway will be recognized internationally as a school that stands for Jesus Christ. Academically, Gateway offers high quality international education which is reflected by the results produced by our students. For the 2018 exam session, we had over 8 students with over 12 points for their AS and A level and 9 students with over 6As in the IGCSE exams. The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement held a Science Olympiad in which 2 of our upper 6 students; Shamiso Zimunya and Karen Mapi- ka made it into the top 100 out of 50000 students in the SADC region who took part and I am proud to say Karen Mapika came first out of all the 50000 students and received a laptop prize. For all these achievements we commend our diligent and hard- working staff for their continuous input in our lives. Not only have we excelled on the Academic front, but also on the sporting field. Our various sporting teams took part in many fixtures and displayed their God given talents, with a resounding number being selected into national teams. The Career Preparation Program (CPP) and Takuranashe (TNS) classes take part in sporting activities such as golf, tag rugby, Bosia, Bocchi and swimming and they have opportunities to com- pete with other schools. They are best represented by our own school's walking calendar and sport commen- tator, Tichafara Hapanyengwe who knows each and every fixture that is to come in the calendar and those Remember your Creator in the days of your youth , Ecclesiastes 12:1 2019, Issue 4 Equipping students to reach their full potential Page 9 SPEECH NIGHT—CAPTAIN’S SPEECH that have already passed. He also knows all the results of all fixtures played whether he's present or not and I can assure you right now that he will probably remember last year’s speech night date and exactly what took place. Gateway has been my home for the past 6 years and has moulded me into a mature young man. When I first joined the school in form 1, I was very socially awkward and quiet. Actually, at some point if someone said, “hie,” I would reply, “I'm fine thanks how are you.” I will gladly say that I no longer respond like that and as the years have gone by I have developed friendships that helped me grow and become more open. My High school life has not always been roses and daisies, I have had my fair share of failures and disappointing test scores. I’m sure many students present would agree that a U in High school is no uncommon phenomenon and It would be in those moments when the whole class has failed a Math Test and Mrs Ratisai would take a whole double lesson to calculate how much our parents have paid from Form 1 through to Upper six and you would really ask yourself why you slept for 10 hours rather than 6, or when you lose a match against the one team you expected to win against and Mr Chirume asks you if the other team was better than you, then you reply with your heads down saying no but clearly the score board says otherwise.
