Issue 9 May 2017 www.intensitiescultmedia.com Mondo Realism, the Sensual Body, and Genre Hybridity in Joe D’Amato’s ‘Emanuelle’ Films Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare John Abbott College Abstract This paper examines the place of Joe D’Amato’s series of Emanuelle films within the context of Italian cine- ma, exploitation cinema, and genre studies—especially the pornography and horror genres. I will focus on what I have labelled D’Amato’s Mondo Realist films that were made in a very short period between 1975-1978. I argue that D’Amato’s films offer an expansive sense of genre hybridity, especially as his films from this brief period are rooted in the Sadean tradition, the cinema of attractions, the Mondo film, neorealism, and the horror genre. I also examine D’Amato’s films in the terms set out by Linda Williams (2004a); namely, as an auteur of ‘body genres’ whose films must be considered in terms that move us beyond dominant scopocentric tendencies in film theory. D’Amato’s films offer a way to open up these categories through the sensual and corporeal experience of his hybrid films. La razza fuoristrada. Veneri nere tra memoria coloniale e orizzonti globali1 di Gaia Giuliani Nei primi anni Settanta, accompagnata e resa popolare dalla na- scente industria pornografica e allo stesso tempo dal cinereportage più o meno finzionale, che apriva la ricerca antropologica visiva allo sguardo turistico del primo mondo sugli altri mondi interni ed esterni all’Occidente (Della Gassa 2014), si sviluppa in Italia una cinematogra- fia specifica, esteticamente ricercata, che coniuga sguardo orientalista e genere erotico. Si tratta di quel cinema porno soft che vedeva tra le sue protagoniste l’attrice eritrea Zeudi Araya e l’attrice indonesiana-olan- dese Laura Gemser. La prima fu al centro di una serie di importanti produzioni filmiche dirette da Luigi Scattini, tra cui La ragazza fuori- strada (1973) e Il corpo (1974), che prenderò qui in considerazione. La seconda divenne l’eroina delle più celebri tra le rivisitazioni apocrife e nere di Emmanuelle, film di Just Jaeckin del 1974 con Sylvia Kristel, tratto dall’omonimo e noto romanzo erotico pubblicato nel 1967 dalla scrittrice franco-thailandese Emmanuelle Arsan. Di questa serie pren- derò in esame Emanuelle nera (1975) di Albert Thomas ed Emanuelle nera – Orient Reportage (1976) di Joe D’Amato. Erotic Adventures on Aphrodite’s Island: The Unofficial Cypriot Black Emanuelle Trilogy and the Film that ‘Increased the Birth Rate in Cyprus’ Costas Constandinides Abstract The dominant paradigm of filmmaking in cinema. Situations 9.2 (2016): 47–65 ISSN: 2288–7822 The Colonial Politics of Gazing in Joe D’Amato’s Black Emanuelle/ Laura Gemser Films Donald L. Anderson (SUNY Westchester Community College) Abstract This article examines two of the most controversial and horror-themed Black Emanuelle films starring the Indonesian actress Laura Gemser (real name Laurette Marcia Gemser), Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals [Emanuelle e gli ultimi cannibali] (1977), and Emanuelle in America (1977). These films encourage what post-colonial critics call the “colonial gaze” which operates within a dialectical framework defining the sexuality of the developed West as “civilized” while casting the developing world and its populations as sexually other and deviant. Gemser’s racial difference and erasure of her specifically Indonesian background is exploited for its imagined erotic difference. The undecidability of Gemser’s racial background permits her character to move between both developed and developing worlds. In these films and others in the series Emanuelle/ Gemser is a mediating subject that is simultaneously “not-quite-other” and “not-quite-Western” who in an often travelogue fashion grants Western viewers their gaze into “primitive” sexuality and violence. In these two films Gemser’s placement within both the urban world of New York City and the tribal worlds of the Amazon uncovers how “civilized” sexuality requires the racist othering of people of color in developing countries in order to secure its place within the proper, bourgeois, and normative sexuality of the developed West. Gender, Race and the Colonial Archive. Sexualized Exoticism and Gendered Racism in Contemporary Italy
ITALIAN STUDIES, 2016, 1–18 Gender, Race and the Colonial Archive. Sexualized Exoticism and Gendered Racism in Contemporary Italy Gaia Giuliani University of Padova; University of Coimbra My article focuses on particular forms of exoticizing discursive practices produced and reproduced in Italy through the most popular and transgenerational media. Three television shows will be taken into consideration: Licia Colò’s Alle falde del Kilimangiaro, Bruno Vespa’s Porta a porta, and Alfonso Signorini’s Kalispéra!. The latter two are particularly well-known for their coverage of Berlusconi’s sex scandal involving the Italian-Moroccan under-age Karima el Mahroug alias Ruby ‘Rubacuori’. Alle falde del Kilimangiaro will be contrasted with the ferocious attacks in the media (video and newspaper) by a number of political forces and cultural opinion makers against former Italian Minister for Integration Cécile Kyenge (2013). This discussion will also analyze the discursive strategies employed by both El Mahroug and Kyenge against the exotizing and openly inferiorizing discourses built around them.
