Presider Blessed be the one, holy and living God. People Glory to God forever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Please sit for the first reading and remain seated until the of the Gospel Acclamation.

3 First Reading Lamentations 1:1-6

How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 137

Refrain (Choir sings first, then Congregation repeats )

(Choir sings verses to the chant by George M. Garrett, Congregation repeats refrain as indicated)

1 By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, when we remembered you, O Zion. 2 As for our harps, we hung them up on the trees in the midst of that land. 3 For those who led us away captive asked us for a , and our oppressors called for mirth: “Sing us one of the of Zion.”

4 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song upon an alien soil. (Refrain) 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill. 6 Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy. 7 Remember the day of Jerusalem, O Lord, against the people of Edom, who said, “Down with it! down with it! even to the ground!” 8 O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy the one who pays you back for what you have done to us! 9 Happy shall he be who takes your little ones, and dashes them against the rock! (Refrain)

Second Reading 2 Timothy 1:1-14

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God – whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did – when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

5 Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Festival Alleluia James J. Chepponis

(Choir sings first time, Congregation joins on the repeat.)

Those attending Children’s Chapel gather in the aisle for the reading of the gospel. After the reading, they will gather just outside the sanctuary for an age-appropriate time of reflection on the gospel and will return at the sign of peace.

6 The Gospel Luke 17:5-10 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’”

Gospeller The Good News. The Gospel of Christ. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon Andrew Suitter

After the sermon and before the creed, you’re invited into a brief period of silence.

7 Please stand as you are able.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

8 Please continue to stand or kneel as you are able.

Greeting and Announcements

The Holy Communion

Offertory Anthem Lead Gently, Lord Clif Cason Lead gently, Lord, and slow, For oh, my steps are weak, And ever as I go, Some soothing sentence speak; That I may turn my face Through doubt’s obscurity Toward thine abiding- place, E’en tho’ I cannot see. For lo, the way is dark; Through mist and cloud I grope, Save for that fitful spark, The little flame of hope. Lead gently, Lord, and slow, For fear that I may fall; I know not where to go Unless I hear thy call. My fainting soul doth yearn For thy green hills afar; So let thy mercy burn - My greater, guiding star!

Please stand as you are able for the Hymn and remain standing for the Great Thanksgiving.

13 Presentation Hymn “Great is thy faithfulness” We invite children, youth, and anyone who wishes to accompany them to follow the gifts of bread, wine, and food gifts forward and gather around the altar for the Great Thanksgiving.

The Great Thanksgiving Enriching Our Worship, Eucharistic Prayer I Presider God be with you. People And also with you . Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

15 The Presider continues It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

Music: Joel Martinson (b. 1960) from Missa Guadalupe. ©1994 Selah Publishing Co, Inc. Reprinted by permission.

16 The presider continues Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love.

Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation.

Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

17 The presider continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with blessed Augustine and all your saints, past, present, and still to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Presider And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

18 Breaking of the Bread

The Presider invites the Congregation to Communion: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Invitation to Communion We offer God’s gracious gift of Holy Communion to anyone who wishes to receive it. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward and cross your arms over your chest. Let the priest know if you would prefer a gluten-free wafer.

Please note: There is no Church School on the first Sunday of the month in order to provide unstructured time for fellowship for all ages.

Communion Hymn “Lord, make us servants of your peace” Hymn 593

19 Please stand as you are able.

Prayer after Communion attributed to St. Francis

Presider Let us pray: All pray together: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

A Letter from Family Promise Chicago North Shore

From Tracy McKeithen, Executive Director, Family Promise Chicago North Shore: Among the people we serve, your congregation is a valued member of Family Promise North Shore. Most people who know of us, think of the hosting that over 20 congregations provide to the homeless families that we screen into our program. However, we understand that not all members of a congregation want to host. We are most fortunate that the North Shore contains many talented people. We at Family Promise would like to provide an outlet for these talents. We are looking for volunteers with experience in Communications, Development, Operations and Finance to join our Committees. Much of this part-time work can be done at home. If you would like to explore sharing your talents to benefit families in homeless situations please contact Board President, Richard Day ([email protected] or 847-722-4714).

Upcoming Youth Events

On Sunday, October 27, St. A’s youth will take a trip to the Museum of Mexican Fine Art for Day of the Dead Xicágo . This is an opportunity for us to connect with another faith community and experience how they remember their loved ones. We will meet in the church parking lot at 1:30pm and carpool to the museum. Parents are needed to drive! Please email Sarah ([email protected]) or text/call her at (773) 571- 5029. This event is suggested for children in 5th grade and up, but anyone in the congregation is welcome to attend. Admission is free. On this special day, guests will enjoy heartfelt ofrendas (altars), live musical performances, face painting, art activities, and Pan de Muerto (traditional Day of the Dead Bread). Please dress appropriately to spend a good part of the day outdoors.

Also, save the date: Sunday, December 1, for the first monthly Sunday late afternoon/early evening Taizé service for young people. Sarah would appreciate feedback from parents and kids on how this service could best serve them. Please email or text/call Sarah (see above).
