Update No. 91 - 14 Nov. 2015 Congratulations to the Black Caps!

No praise can be too great for the achievements of and Ross Taylor in the 2nd Test. For NZ to top the Aussies’ colossal 559/5 was incredible.

Williamson’s 166 was sublime – he was unhurried in his shot making, superb timing and he stoked the ball to all parts with grace and style.

Taylor, similarly – his 290 was an astonishing effort and he, too, hit with power and grace. Many in the media were writing him off – “on the downward slope” they said! How wrong – Taylor has batted consistently well all year, his scores have been: ICC CWC 14, 9, 5*, 1, 24*, 56, 42, 30 (Semi Final), 44 (Final) England Tests 62 & 8, 20 & 48 ODIs 57, 119*, 110, 42, 47, Zimbabwe ODI 112* Australia Tests 0 & 26, 290 & 36* Downward slope indeed! Some critics need to do some proper research!

Now for the 3rd Test, the first Day/Night Test under lights with a pink ball. Your Editor is journeying to Adelaide – expectations are high, our batsmen are in form, time for our bowlers to step up.

Mark Chapman hits 124* on ODI Debut, 16 Nov. Hong Kong 298/4 (50) vs. UAE 209 (43.2) – ICC , Dubai

Man of the Match – Mark Chapman, 124* off 116 balls, 11 fours, 2 sixes.

Mark, Hong Kong Vice , had barely stepped off the plane in Dubai, before hitting the second highest ever on ODI debut – behind only Desmond Hayne’s 148. Nine others have hit tons on debut – and are the only other Kiwis to do so. We wish Mark, and HK, every success in theis Tournament!

HK beat UAE again yesterday in a further round of the ICC WCL. Mark’s 27 come of just 33 balls – Hong Kong 282/8 (50) A Rath 53, M Chapman 27, Tanwir Afzal 73, Aizaz Khan 37* UAE 146 (40.1)

14 & 21 November 2015 CORNWALL vs. PARNELL Cornwall Park 1.

CORNWALL 218 (76.4) S Crooks 100, S Nair 37, J Cassidy 41, Mike Ravic 3/50 (19.4), Billy Sanger 3/49 (16) Ganesh Ratnasabapaty 4/48 (17) FOW 4, 8, 11, 11, 53, 82, 180, 202, 218, 218

PARNELL 54/4 (20) Ben Rainger 18*, F Klaasen 3/15 (9) FOW 6, 6, 25, 27 To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am

DAY 1. Skipper Dave Goddard was away studying, Mark Chapman had left for Dubai to join Hong Kong in the ICC WCL Tournament and Lockie was not available due to Aces commitments, Coming in to replace them were Prasant Dhanjee, a sound allrounder from the Reserves, and Ben Rainger, a batsman, just back from Victoria University/Karori CC, who had represented Auckland U19 last eason.

A very nice touch was the presence of Evan Watkin, the former International umpire, About to retire, he expressed a wish to stand in a game at Cornwall Park and flew from Wellington at his own expense. Evan, thank you for your contribution to umpiring and to the game in general.

Cornwall won the toss, elected to bat and promptly had troubles. First Rav had their opener caught behind by acting captain, Ben Horne, and then snared Guptill-Bunce lbw. Ganesh then chimed in by removing both Marra and Nidamanaru for ducks - 4/11, a start almost beyond belief!

Reality slowly returned but Ben took another catch – Nair out to Ganesh and then, at 82, he trapped Wilson lbw. But Crook dug in, got support from Cassidy, and our sharpness lost it’s edge. These two added 98 and ensured Cornwall of a passably respectable total. Crook’s 100 was a particularly good innings but Billy Sanger snagged 3 lbws to deal to Cassidy, Klaasen and, finally, Crooks. Rav came back and ended the innings with the 6th lbw of the innings.

Then it was Parnell’s turn at the crease. Not impressive – a predilection to pull led to 3 of the 4 dismissals in the 20 overs to stumps. First Tim, then Jesse and, finally, Sam.The exception was Tom - coming in at the fall of Tim’s , he flayed at his very first ball and was caught. All round, not a judicious start and it was left to Ben Horne and Ben Rainger to bat through till stumps. There is still a lot of work to be done next week!

Ganesh about to deliver and gaining an lbw decision from Umpire Evan Watkin

A close knit bunch – Sam, Ben Rainger, Billy, George jnr, Tim and Ben Horne, the ‘keeper

Billy Sanger picked up 3/49 Prasant was unsuccessful – 14o 4m 46r 0w

Tim, also unsuccessful 0/21 off 10 Rav, the workhorse – 19.4o 8m 50r 3w

Ben Rainger and Ben Horne – saw us through to stumps. Bring on Day 2.

Premier Reserves

14 & 21 November PARNELL vs. EDEN ROSKILL Orakei Domain 1.

EDEN ROSKILL 151 Razin Bharde 3/54 (23), Stu Wood 5/17 (12)

PARNELL 204/8 Justin Rosenberg 59, Chey Barnes 54 To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am

XXL 3 reports: The Reserves started day one of their two day contest verse Eden Roskill at Orakei Domain. Skipper Ryan Turner lost another toss resulting in PCC . Rudi Rischoff made the first breakthrough of the day, nicking out the Roskill opening bat. Chey Barnes toiled for 9 overs and managed a wicket off the last over of his spell. This paved the way for Razin Bharde who took three well earnt sticks. Enter Stu Wood. The devastating medium slow bowler was near unplayable. His hooping inswingers were too much for the opposition lower order. Finishing the day and the Eden Roskill lower order with figures of 12 overs, 5-17. Roskill all out for 150.

Stu Wood continued his momentum with a quick fire 30. His opening partner Justin Rosenberg made a sublime half century. This was complemented well by Chey Barnes' barnstorming innings, registering his first score of 50+ of the season. The lads knocked off the first innings win and pushed the lead to 50.

All to play for on day 2

Thirds – 2B Grade

14 November PARNELL vs. KUMEU Thos. Bloodworth Park 1

KUMEU 231/9 (60) Elliot Jaffe 5/68 (16), Peter Hickman 2/18 (10), James Nuttall 1/81 (21)

PARNELL 104/2 Thomas Landrigan 39, Matthew Vercoe-Curtis 31

To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am

Skipper Peter Hickman reporting: We began our 2 day competition against Kumeu, and set ourselves a solid platform moving into day 2. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, our strong bowling attack continued its good work, leaving them at 132 for 8 at lunch. After lunch, an outstanding innings by one of Kumeu’s batsmen left them at 231 after 60 overs. Our bowlers have very respectable figures, Elliot Jaffe enjoyed a return to bowling, taking 5 for 68 from his 16 overs. Peter Hickman had figures of 2 for 18 from his 10 overs. Elliot Humpries was unlucky not to get a wicket, allowing just 29 runs from 10 overs. Taking nothing away from our other bowlers but I cannot say enough praise for James Nuttal, bowling 21 overs that included the first and last ball of the innings, he finished with figures of 1 for 81, a column that doesn’t do him justice considering the amount of times that ‘catches win matches’ was quoted after the days play.

When it came to our , the opening pair of Thomas Landrigan and Matthew Vercoe-Curtis gave us a great start, Thomas finishing with 39 and Matthew with 31, that left Josh Milne and Vikrant Sohdi to see out the day, finishing 104 for 2 at stumps.

One Day Premiers

14 November PARNELL vs. WAITAKERE Walker Park WAITAKERE 284/9 (32) Ryan Bergman 3/42 (7), Luke O’Toole 4/27 (6) PARNELL 58 (13.2) Ryan Bergman 27 RESULT: PARNELL LOST 226 RUNS

Manager Richard Humphries reporting: ODPS vs Waitakere, at Walker Park 14/11/2015 We won!!! The excitement was high, another composite team banded, or was that band-aided, together, and the toss was won!!! An excellent start. Several newcomers to the team, scarfies back in town, and a “resident” from Christmas Island, so optimism was high, and so were the nerves, as for many, this was their first game for the summer. Many publications now have “items” concerning numbers, and this may possibly be the best way to write the match report. 1 - toss we won 11 - the number of players we had 9 -wickets we took 7 - bowlers used 68 -extras conceded 284 - runs by the opposition 13.2 -overs we faced 1 -batsman reached double figures 8 -ducks registered 10 -wickets we lost, for 58 3 -wickets taken by Ryan Bergman to go with his 27 runs scored 4 -wickets taken by Luke O’Toole for 17 runs conceded off 6 overs

Parnell Kings - One Day 3A Grade

14 November PARNELL KINGS vs. WAITAKERE GRENADES Walker Park

WAITAKERE 187 Chak 2/18. Ashwin 2/37, Arul 1/19 PARNELL KINGS 188/9 (35.3) Mani 56*, Hari 44, Arul 25 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 1 WICKETS

Captain Chak Arunachalam reporting: We played Waitakere Grenades this Saturday. It was a great thriller. Bowling first we dismissed our opposition for 187. We lost our way in our chase and needed over 60 runs to win with only 1 wicket left. When we thought it was curtains for us, the unthinkable happened Mani who batted at 10 scored an unbeaten 56 and with the company of number 11 Ashwin who showed solid defence we crossed the line with 4 overs to spare.

[email protected]

Note: Updates are now despatched via MailChimp and Manager Steve, last week, advised that 698 sendings (of 1700) were opened. Quite and astonishing number – surely some dads, mums or grandparents could take the trouble – almost all of you carry cameras – to send me photos of youngsters, hat trick takers, Players of the Day etc etc. I try to see some Junior games each week but there is a lot of territory to cover so PLEASE give me a hand! Great Days at the WACA

Your Editor has twice attended international games at the WACA, Perth WA – this last week brought back great memories! Brilliant cricket and Australia lost both the games!!!

1. 2nd Test AUSTRALIA vs. WEST INDIES The WACA, 12-16 December 1975

AUSTRALIA 329 I Chappell 156, G Gilmour 45, M Holding 4/88, A Roberts 2/65, B Julien 2/51 & 169 G Chappell 43, R Marsh 39, A Roberts 7/54 (14), B Julien 3/32 (10.1)

WEST INDIES 585 R Fredericks 169, A Kallicharran 57, C Lloyd 149, DL Murray 63, K Boyce 49 D Lillee 20. 0. 123. 2 G Thomson 17. 0. 123. 3 G Gilmour 14. 0. 103. 2 M Walker 17. 1. 99. 2 A Mallett 26. 4. 103. 0 I Chappell 1.4. 1. 0. 0

WEST INDIES WON BY AN INNINGS AND 87 RUNS

The 1977 Wisden said “this was one of the most remarkable Test Matches which can ever have been played ….”.

I was returning home from Hong Kong and stopped off to see the Test and it , truly, was extraordinary. On the first day Ian Chappell batted superbly and held his side together.

The Windies’ innings commenced 30 minutes into the 2nd Day. Greenidge, a pair in the 1st Test, had been replaced by Julien the hard hitting Kent all rounder, & he opened with Fredericks who faced up to Lillee.

Fredericks attacked – 2nd ball, a bouncer, cleared fine leg for 6 and he showed the bowlers no mercy. The boundary was peppered, anything short was cut or hooked, anything up pumped through the arc from cover to mid wicket. Front foot/back foot – it was all the same. Lillee’s first 3 overs (8 balls) cost 27, Thompson’s 33. Gilmour came on to stop the rot and his 3 cost 39! Walker slowed the onslaught fractionally and then Mallett was showed just a wee bit of respect.

Lunch, after 90 minutes and only 14 overs (112 balls) - 130/1, Julien out for 25.Frederick’s 100 was off just 71 balls and his 169 off only 149. And look at who he was facing – I have given the full bowling figures, Lillee and Thomson at their peak!

Then Lloyd really rubbed it in and, when they had to bat again, Australia crumpled to the hostility of Andy Roberts.

Anan extraordinary and spectacular game – one of the very best that I have ever seen.

2. 1st ODI AUSTRALIA vs. NEW ZEALAND The WACA,1 February 2009

AUSTRALIA 181 (48.4) M Hussey 49, B Haddin 31, K Mills 4/35 (9.4), I O’Brien 2/43 (10)

NEW ZEALAND 182/8 (50) R Taylor 64, N Broom, 29, K Mills 26, S Tait 2/40, N Bracken 3/35

NEW ZEALAND WON BY 2 WICKETS OFF THE LST BALL OF THE GAME

Another remarkable game – the scores tell most of the story. Our bowlers strangled the Aussie batting – Vettori bowled 10 overs for only 22 runs!

But, chasing only 182 to win, we made dreadfully hard work of the task. Thankfully, Ross Taylor found allies in Broom and Mills and, then, Vettori late cut the very last ball to clinch a very well deserved win.

Earlier, controversy arose and, to quote Wisden:

“Broom’s gritty contribution ended when he was bowled by Clarke – a starightforward –looking dismissal until replays showed Haddin’s gloves creeping ahead of the stumps to take the ball (which should have been called a no ball under Law 40.3). The New Zealanders’ irritation at this was nothing next to the Australians’ self-righteous fury at being accused of dishonesty. As for the truth, only Haddin knows.”

Yes, and McCullum was earlier given out lbw when replays showed clearly that he had edged the ball onto his pad. Thank goodness for the introductiion of the DRS!

Yours truly is very much looking forward to heading to Adelaide to witness first hand the 3rd Australia vs New Zealand Test!
