Weekly Update Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No. 91 - 14 Nov. 2015 Congratulations to the Black Caps! No praise can be too great for the achievements of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor in the 2nd Test. For NZ to top the Aussies’ colossal 559/5 was incredible. Williamson’s 166 was sublime – he was unhurried in his shot making, superb timing and he stoked the ball to all parts with grace and style. Taylor, similarly – his 290 was an astonishing effort and he, too, hit with power and grace. Many in the media were writing him off – “on the downward slope” they said! How wrong – Taylor has batted consistently well all year, his scores have been: ICC CWC 14, 9, 5*, 1, 24*, 56, 42, 30 (Semi Final), 44 (Final) England Tests 62 & 8, 20 & 48 ODIs 57, 119*, 110, 42, 47, Zimbabwe ODI 112* Australia Tests 0 & 26, 290 & 36* Downward slope indeed! Some critics need to do some proper research! Now for the 3rd Test, the first Day/Night Test under lights with a pink ball. Your Editor is journeying to Adelaide – expectations are high, our batsmen are in form, time for our bowlers to step up. Mark Chapman hits 124* on ODI Debut, 16 Nov. Hong Kong 298/4 (50) vs. UAE 209 (43.2) – ICC World Cricket League, Dubai Man of the Match – Mark Chapman, 124* off 116 balls, 11 fours, 2 sixes. Mark, Hong Kong Vice Captain, had barely stepped off the plane in Dubai, before hitting the second highest ever century on ODI debut – behind only Desmond Hayne’s 148. Nine others have hit tons on debut – Martin Guptill and Rob Nicol are the only other Kiwis to do so. We wish Mark, and HK, every success in theis Tournament! HK beat UAE again yesterday in a further round of the ICC WCL. Mark’s 27 come of just 33 balls – Hong Kong 282/8 (50) A Rath 53, M Chapman 27, Tanwir Afzal 73, Aizaz Khan 37* UAE 146 (40.1) Men’s Premier Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy 14 & 21 November 2015 CORNWALL vs. PARNELL Cornwall Park 1. CORNWALL 218 (76.4) S Crooks 100, S Nair 37, J Cassidy 41, Mike Ravic 3/50 (19.4), Billy Sanger 3/49 (16) Ganesh Ratnasabapaty 4/48 (17) FOW 4, 8, 11, 11, 53, 82, 180, 202, 218, 218 PARNELL 54/4 (20) Ben Rainger 18*, F Klaasen 3/15 (9) FOW 6, 6, 25, 27 To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am DAY 1. Skipper Dave Goddard was away studying, Mark Chapman had left for Dubai to join Hong Kong in the ICC WCL Tournament and Lockie was not available due to Aces commitments, Coming in to replace them were Prasant Dhanjee, a sound allrounder from the Reserves, and Ben Rainger, a batsman, just back from Victoria University/Karori CC, who had represented Auckland U19 last eason. A very nice touch was the presence of Evan Watkin, the former International umpire, About to retire, he expressed a wish to stand in a game at Cornwall Park and flew from Wellington at his own expense. Evan, thank you for your contribution to umpiring and to the game in general. Cornwall won the toss, elected to bat and promptly had troubles. First Rav had their opener caught behind by acting captain, Ben Horne, and then snared Guptill-Bunce lbw. Ganesh then chimed in by removing both Marra and Nidamanaru for ducks - 4/11, a start almost beyond belief! Reality slowly returned but Ben took another catch – Nair out to Ganesh and then, at 82, he trapped Wilson lbw. But Crook dug in, got support from Cassidy, and our sharpness lost it’s edge. These two added 98 and ensured Cornwall of a passably respectable total. Crook’s 100 was a particularly good innings but Billy Sanger snagged 3 lbws to deal to Cassidy, Klaasen and, finally, Crooks. Rav came back and ended the innings with the 6th lbw of the innings. Then it was Parnell’s turn at the crease. Not impressive – a predilection to pull led to 3 of the 4 dismissals in the 20 overs to stumps. First Tim, then Jesse and, finally, Sam.The exception was Tom - coming in at the fall of Tim’s wicket, he flayed at his very first ball and was caught. All round, not a judicious start and it was left to Ben Horne and Ben Rainger to bat through till stumps. There is still a lot of work to be done next week! Ganesh about to deliver and gaining an lbw decision from Umpire Evan Watkin A close knit bunch – Sam, Ben Rainger, Billy, George jnr, Tim and Ben Horne, the ‘keeper Billy Sanger picked up 3/49 Prasant was unsuccessful – 14o 4m 46r 0w Tim, also unsuccessful 0/21 off 10 Rav, the workhorse – 19.4o 8m 50r 3w Ben Rainger and Ben Horne – saw us through to stumps. SHORE ROAD RESERVE: From the above you will see that we will be back playing again, shortly, at Shore Road Reserve. The contractors have done tremendously well, the Reserve is looking a picture and we hope to be using the Outdoor Nets very soon. WATCH THIS SPACE FOR FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS! Premier Reserves 14 & 21 November PARNELL vs. EDEN ROSKILL Orakei Domain 1. EDEN ROSKILL 151 Razin Bharde 3/54 (23), Stu Wood 5/17 (12) PARNELL 204/8 Justin Rosenberg 59, Chey Barnes 54 To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am XXL 3 reports: The Reserves started day one of their two day contest verse Eden Roskill at Orakei Domain. Skipper Ryan Turner lost another toss resulting in PCC bowling. Rudi Rischoff made the first breakthrough of the day, nicking out the Roskill opening bat. Chey Barnes toiled for 9 overs and managed a wicket off the last over of his spell. This paved the way for Razin Bharde who took three well earnt sticks. Enter Stu Wood. The devastating medium slow bowler was near unplayable. His hooping inswingers were too much for the opposition lower order. Finishing the day and the Eden Roskill lower order with figures of 12 overs, 5-17. Roskill all out for 150. Stu Wood continued his momentum with a quick fire 30. His opening partner Justin Rosenberg made a sublime half century. This was complemented well by Chey Barnes' barnstorming innings, registering his first score of 50+ of the season. The lads knocked off the first innings win and pushed the lead to 50. All to play for on day 2 Thirds – 2B Grade 14 November PARNELL vs. KUMEU Thos. Bloodworth Park 1 KUMEU 231/9 (60) Elliot Jaffe 5/68 (16), Peter Hickman 2/18 (10), James Nuttall 1/81 (21) PARNELL 104/2 Thomas Landrigan 39, Matthew Vercoe-Curtis 31 To be continued next Saturday, 21 November, from 11.00am Skipper Peter Hickman reporting: We began our 2 day competition against Kumeu, and set ourselves a solid platform moving into day 2. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, our strong bowling attack continued its good work, leaving them at 132 for 8 at lunch. After lunch, an outstanding innings by one of Kumeu’s batsmen left them at 231 after 60 overs. Our bowlers have very respectable figures, Elliot Jaffe enjoyed a return to bowling, taking 5 for 68 from his 16 overs. Peter Hickman had figures of 2 for 18 from his 10 overs. Elliot Humpries was unlucky not to get a wicket, allowing just 29 runs from 10 overs. Taking nothing away from our other bowlers but I cannot say enough praise for James Nuttal, bowling 21 overs that included the first and last ball of the innings, he finished with figures of 1 for 81, a wickets column that doesn’t do him justice considering the amount of times that ‘catches win matches’ was quoted after the days play. When it came to our batting, the opening pair of Thomas Landrigan and Matthew Vercoe-Curtis gave us a great start, Thomas finishing with 39 and Matthew with 31, that left Josh Milne and Vikrant Sohdi to see out the day, finishing 104 for 2 at stumps. One Day Premiers 14 November PARNELL vs. WAITAKERE Walker Park WAITAKERE 284/9 (32) Ryan Bergman 3/42 (7), Luke O’Toole 4/27 (6) PARNELL 58 (13.2) Ryan Bergman 27 RESULT: PARNELL LOST 226 RUNS Manager Richard Humphries reporting: ODPS vs Waitakere, at Walker Park 14/11/2015 We won!!! The excitement was high, another composite team banded, or was that band-aided, together, and the toss was won!!! An excellent start.
