78 rpm VOCAL RECORDS “FAMOUS BARITONE ” Russian Artistotipia records (1910-15 period) bore an oval area on the upper portion of the label which would present a portrait of the artist. The item below has three stars in place of the artist portrait (see illustrated labels section), who is identified on the label (in Russian) as “famous baritone”. I sent tapes in 1989 to Aida Favia-Artsay and Syd Grey for help in identification. Aida, in a letter to be included with the record, said “I know he is Giraldoni”. I didn’t think so, and she replied, “While I am convinced you have one of the most delightful rarities, you seem to be set on deprecating its intrinsic (and monetary) value. Oh well – after all it’s your record.” On the other hand, Syd Grey wrote, “It is not a mystery baritone but is confirmed as (George) Baklanov. Jim Dennis and I have done work on an Artistotipia catalogue and a friend in Kiev confirmed that it was Baklanov. He saw the files and it was stated that Baklanov was paid for the record. The reason was he had an exclusive Amour (Russian Gramophone) contract and couldn’t record for anyone else.” This letter is also included with the disc below. Who’s right ? … or it it yet some another baritone? Interestingly, Artistotipia records were usually recorded at about 70 rpm (although not mentioned on the label), presumably to make a somewhat longer playing item. 2540. 12” Artistotopia 417/418. Die jüngste Produktion dieser Reihe "The Early RIAS-Recordings" enthält bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen von Friedrich Gulda, die zwischen 1950 und 1959 entstanden. Die Einspielungen von Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel und Chopin zeigen den jungen Pianisten an der Schwelle zu internationalem Ruhm. Die Meinung unserer Musikkritiker: Eine repräsentative Auswahl bisher unveröffentlichter Aufnahmen, die aber bereits alle Namen enthält, die für Guldas späteres Repertoire bedeutend werden sollten: Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Chopin.

    THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. She appeared with success in South America, Russia, Spain, England and her native Italy and was on the roster of the Hammerstein Manhattan Opera, 1908-10. One New York press notice indicates that her rendering of the “Suicidio” from La Gioconda on a Manhattan Sunday night concert “kept her busy bowing in recognition to applause for three or four minutes”. At La Scala she was cast with Battistini in Simon Boccanegra and created for that house in 1911 the Marschallin in their first Rosenkavalier.
