78 rpm VOCAL RECORDS “FAMOUS ” Russian Artistotipia records (1910-15 period) bore an oval area on the upper portion of the label which would present a portrait of the artist. The item below has three stars in place of the artist portrait (see illustrated labels section), who is identified on the label (in Russian) as “famous baritone”. I sent tapes in 1989 to Favia-Artsay and Syd Grey for help in identification. Aida, in a letter to be included with the record, said “I know he is Giraldoni”. I didn’t think so, and she replied, “While I am convinced you have one of the most delightful rarities, you seem to be set on deprecating its intrinsic (and monetary) value. Oh well – after all it’s your record.” On the other hand, Syd Grey wrote, “It is not a mystery baritone but is confirmed as (George) Baklanov. Jim Dennis and I have done work on an Artistotipia catalogue and a friend in Kiev confirmed that it was Baklanov. He saw the files and it was stated that Baklanov was paid for the record. The reason was he had an exclusive Amour (Russian Gramophone) contract and couldn’t record for anyone else.” This letter is also included with the disc below. Who’s right ? … or it it yet some another baritone? Interestingly, Artistotipia records were usually recorded at about 70 rpm (although not mentioned on the label), presumably to make a somewhat longer playing item. 2540. 12” Artistotopia 417/418. : Cortigiani (Verdi) / BORIS GODOUNOV: (Moussorgsky). 2. $60.00. In Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame he created le Prieur in the 1902 premiere, although the souvenir he has left us, below, was from the role of Bonaface, created by Lucien Fugère, who appears with him the illustration to the right. Information as to his activities following his stage retirement up to his death seem almost non-existent. Her career was later beleaguered by growing deafness. She retired from the operatic stage in 1942 and assumed a humble life as a hotel proprietress before dying of cancer in 1948. She had been highly regarded with the greatest admiration and respect both as a singer of great personal beauty and stage presence as well as astonishing histrionic capacity. She was the leading Italian Wagnerian soprano of her time and equally successful in the repertoire. She was with the Met from 1912 through 1920. Her teachers included George Henschel and Victor Maurel. Of Maurel, Curtis described him as “very difficult, very exacting. I have had to work so hard under him that I don’t expect to find … [actual] opera work rigorous at all”. Prior to her first Met season she had to prepare Aida, Mimì, Marguerite, Euridice, Nedda, Santuzza, Micaëla, Venus “and six other German operas, and some less well known roles in French and as well as works in English”. As it turned out, she never appeared as any of these roles, but was rather assigned to smaller parts. She did have more prominent stage opportunities via concert tours and various music festivals. She appears to have made only one record for Vocalion. Toedt in New York and with Sbriglia and Granier in Paris. In 1903 he made his New York debut with at the opening of her last tour of America. Musical America recounted an amusing story regarding Cunningham’s appearance as an assisting artist immediately before that of Adelina Patti’s appearance in San Francisco. “Mr. Cunningham was announced on the program to sing ‘Eri tu’ from Verdi’s Masked Ball immediately before Mme. Patti was to take the stage. At first the audience seemed restless and anxious to get to the next number, which was Mme. Patti’s, but as Mr. Cunningham proceeded … they gradually warmed up to him. …When the end came the audience apparently forgot that Mme. Patti was to sing. … The demonstration of the immense crowd was so great that Mr. Cunningham was obliged to respond to fourteen recalls, and to sing three extra songs. In the meantime, the famous diva was standing in her dressing-room, waiting to sing, and the result was that she would not speak to Mr. Cunningham for four days.” His career was primarily in oratorio and concert, although he had been offered operatic opportunities, Among the singers with whom he frequently shared the stage was soprano Corinne Rider-Kelsey. – Internet sources. 1708. 10” B&S Columbia 3162 [3162-1B] (M-181-1B). Cape Town (or Boshov), SA, 1891 (or 1899)-Gauteng, SA, 1974. . Beginning vocal studies at an unusually late age (assuming the earlier birth date to be correct), she was awarded a gold medal at the South African Eistedfod, Cape Town, 1922, this after just a few months of lessons. She then began a nine year period of study in England under Raimund von Zur-Mühlen, giving her first Lieder recital in Wigmore Hall, 1928. After a 1932 appearance with the London Symphony Orchestra, she was invited by conductor Hans Weisbach to join a concert group touring principal European cities. “She created a sensation in Vienna when she was invited on various occasions to sing with the Orchestra,” conductors having included Weingartner, and Albert Coates. There’s much to report on her life that space here doesn’t permit, but perhaps the most salient point was her marriage to Albert Coates in 1945, following two earlier marriages. The second of the two had been to composer C. J. Nettlefold, “who had done much to encourage her in her career as a singer”. She spent the War period in California and retired in 1953, excepting for a final appearance with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1959 in a concert in memory of her husband, Albert Coates. Strangely, she seems to have only made private recordings, these in the 1930s for HMV. –Quotes from Internet S.A. Opera Singers. 3753. 12” White Special Record HMV GS 13 [2B-7811-II/2B-7813-I]. VIOLET ELLIOTT [lady bass] “Suddenly there came a promise - just a promise - of the depths to which that voice could sink. Its fulfillment came with the second song, The Diver , a song written for male bass voices, and for which new band parts had to be hastily written. The singer began almost airily in her clear high notes, but then she went down and down and down - down with the diver ‘to the 'depths of the sea’. And her voice was full of a sombre and tragic meaning. But with all its depths there was none of the heaviness and lifelessness that customarily go with the contralto. It was a bass that for all its depths had life and brightness in it. It engulfed the whole wide auditorium with its resonance. It had a strange metallic ring in it - the ring of trumpets. Miss Elliott triumphed, and she almost wept over it. ‘If’, she said afterwards, ‘I can only achieve fame by sounding fat and wobbly and manlike, I won't have fame at all. I don't want to be a freak; I want to be a woman. Such a fuss, too, all because I can get down to D. And the fun of it is that no one, not even my teacher, discovered it till the other day, though I have - 52 -

He subsequently taught, two of his notable pupils having been soprano Arleen Augér and bass Justino Diaz. In this later period he also did some operatic work but none for the major houses. A daughter, Marthe, had a substantial career. – The American Singer (Peter G. Davis) 1700. 10” acous Gennett 5306 [8604a/8605a]. CECIL FANNING [b]. Columbus, OH, 1883 - 1931. He began vocal studies at the age of 16 with H. B. Turpin, who became his accompanist and manager as well. His concert debut was in 1906, followed by a U.S. tour. Two years later he sang in England, returning to tour there and the Continent in 1912-13. His recital debut was in 1916. From 1921 until his early death, he taught at the Capitol College of Oratory and Music. One interesting clipping mentions that Fanning was heard in Lenox, MA, at “Tanglewood”, then the private home of Richard Dixey. “The whole Summer colony of Lenox was present and both artists (Fanning and his accompanist) were received with the warmest demonstrations of enthusiasm.” Columbia contracted his recording services “for a term of years”, but only three records resulted. 3051. 12” TC Columbia A5375 [30760-1/30950-1].
