Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa celebrates 40th Anniversary with Lucky Cat Exhibition

Resort welcomes Japanese cultural icon of good fortune

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, located at 2424 Kalakaua Avenue, announces the arrival of Lucky Cat, an exclusive exhibition featuring maneki-neko, the historic Japanese cultural icon of good fortune. Beginning in May 2016 and coinciding with the resort’s 40th anniversary, the widely-recognized symbol of good luck will dispense fortune cards featuring clever sayings and offering fun surprises to guests and visitors in an experiential setting. The cat is located on the ground floor of the Ewa Tower. No purchase is necessary. Lucky Cat is available 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., daily. Standing an impressive nine feet tall, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa is the first resort to host the interactive installation following its debut at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The Lucky Cat exhibit is designed to reward the curiosity of guests and visitors who stop and explore with its beckoning paw. Maneki-neko is Japanese for “fortune cat” or “welcoming cat” and is traditionally found at the entrance to businesses, where it is said to bring good fortune and wealth to its owner. Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa is using the Lucky Cat to turn the expectation around and share its good fortune with guests. To commemorate 40 years of business for the resort, Lucky Cat will dispense fortune cards to all guests who place their hand on its paw. For a select few, the fortune cards will function as prizes for a range of resort gifts and experiences, including dinner for two at the resort’s acclaimed Japengo, a full-day ocean-view private cabana situated overlooking famed Waikiki, or 50-minute treatment at Waikiki’s premier resort spa, Na Ho’ola.

“The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas is highly regarded in the industry for its interactive exhibits and we are thrilled to be welcoming Lucky Cat to Waikiki,” says David Nadelman, Area Vice President and General Manager. “We are confident that visitors from across the globe will enjoy taking selfies and receiving fortunes from this extraordinary manaki-neko. I am certain that it will mark the beginning of another fabulous 40 years for our property.” Lucky Cat is a nine-foot chrome-finished fiberglass sculpture created by Digital Kitchen in partnership with The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and California-based Storyland Studios. Hours of operation for Lucky Cat are daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The hotel spa and SWIM Restaurant also have special Lucky Cat offers available daily. Visitors are encouraged to take their photo with Lucky Cat and share their experience on social media using #YouLuckyCat.

Sheraton Princess Kaiulani is marking its 61st anniversary in June with a landmark upgrade project in its Ainahau Tower. The 280-room tower, which houses many of the hotel’s premier rooms, is receiving new carpet, new furniture, new beds, new wallpaper, new blackout drapes, and an internet upgrade as well.

The current work is expected to wrap up by early Fall.

The cost of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani project is about $5 million, and some of the money was used to upgrade the hotel’s main lobby, which included an overhaul of its public restrooms in the lobby.

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor’s Biggest Little Airshow in Hawaii June 4, 5 To Feature World Class Pilots and Planes

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor’s popular remote control Biggest Little Airshow in Hawaii sponsored by Aloha Petroleum is back for its ninth year Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, 10am to 4pm. Guests will be able to drive on to Ford Island for this event, or take the free shuttle from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Parking is free. A family favorite, the Airshow features open cockpits, hangar tours, restored World War II aircraft, and remote control flying by some of the best pilots and aircraft from the Mainland.

For two days, Ford Island will come alive with remote-control flying, static aircraft and full-size aircraft on display, “candy bombings” over historic Ford Island Runway for the keiki, hands-on modeling stations, a Kids Zone with rides, food, drinks, retail, music, entertainment, activities and – new this year – snow. Open cockpits and access to Hangar 79 to see the Museum’s many aircraft exhibits and the Swamp Ghost and Nakajima Kate in restoration will add to the event.

This year the Airshow welcomes Warbirds West, an award winning team of pilots from around the country flying giant-scale remote controlled aircraft. A dazzling T-33 Thunderbird opening act kicks off the show followed by multiple performances featuring the A10 Warthog, F14 Tomcat, F9 Panther and the impressive F100 Super Saber flying at speeds approaching 200 mph. Tribute flights will include a Douglas SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber, two Japanese A6M Zero fighters matched with a pair of “Flying Tiger” P-40E Warhawks, and two Chance Vought F4U Corsairs. In an epic display of air-to-air combat simulation, Republic P47 Thunderbolts will duel with Focke-Wulf 190 fighters. Multiple North American P51 Mustangs will demonstrate precision flying, and a Stearman biplane will perform aerobatics.

The Warbirds West performance will include Alan Szabo flying one of his explosive helicopter aerobatic routines in a circus-like aviation performance. The performances will focus on innovative aircraft, which are rooted to the U.S. armed services and their defense of our nation’s freedom. On the ground, spectators will be able to explore static aircraft displays and interact with pilots and crew members.

Talented local performers will also join award-winning Mainland pilots from the Academy of Model Aeronautics with their 1-to-4 scale planes to perform remote-control aviation feats. Specialty acts will feature: Pattern, 3-D fixed wing and helicopter aerobatic flights, aerobatics performances, South Pacific battles, "Candy Bomber" drops, and Skycam drone helicopters. Remote control aircraft on static display will include jets,

helicopters, Viper Jets, Warbirds, B-17s, B26Bs, P-47s, a Zero, P-38s, Corsairs, OV-10s, and more.

“We’ll have spectacular airplanes and dog fight action that’s sure to have the crowd on its feet,” said Michael Fetyko, Warbirds West Team Captain. “Combining pilot and engineering skills with the technology required to pull off these breathtaking demonstrations supports our mission to inspire youth toward educational opportunities in science, engineering and mathematics along with a deep appreciation for our rich American history."

Special display marks 74th anniversary of the Battle of Midway: In addition to these activities, this year’s event will also commemorate the Battle of Midway, a four-day, sea-and-air battle that was the decisive turning point of World War II in the Pacific. The Museum’s newest display pays tribute to the Battle Of Midway with original WWII murals, recently restored and now hanging in Hangar 79 for Airshow guests to view for the first time.

Visitors can also enjoy free tours of Hangar 79 and climb into the open cockpits of some of the Museum’s classic aircraft. Hangar 79 still bears the bullet holes of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Inside, guests will see helicopters, fighter planes, and Lt. Ted Shealy's Restoration Shop, the 1941 machine shop that is busy restoring the Museum's aircraft. They’ll also get up close and personal with an F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-86s, P- 40, MiG-15, F-111, and the one and only “Swamp Ghost,” the Museum’s B-17E Flying Fortress.

Biggest Little Airshow in Hawaii sponsors include: Aloha Petroleum, Papa John’s Pizza, City and County of Honolulu, Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, Enterprise Rent a Car, Pearlridge Center, Pepsi, Veterans United, Hawaii News Now, Yelp, iHeart Media, Xtreme Fun, Jelly Belly Candy Company, and Aloha Beer Company.

Admission to the Airshow is $5 per person (including entry to Hangar 79), $15 per family (limit 6 entries per family). It’s free with Museum general admission and free to Museum Members. Tickets for the Airshow only and tickets for the entire Museum visit that day are available online at www.PacificAviationMuseum.org. Museum admissions may also be purchased at the Museum and at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center ticketing desk. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes, 7:30am to 5:00pm from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, round trip to the Museum.
