UH opens Rk School Record Prev. Rnk. the Classic on Th ursday, Sept. 1 against No. 22 Ohio State at 7:00 p.m. Th ey 1 California (31) 3-0 3 will then face No. 23 Long Beach State on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m. before 2 Penn State (11) 1-1 1 the tournament fi nale vs. No. 12 UCLA on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 5:00 p.m. Th e 3 Southern California (5) 1-1 2 ‘Bows opened the season last weekend hosting the Chevron Rainbow Wahine 4 Texas (9) 2-0 4 Invitational where they went 3-0 en route to their fourth straight tournament 5 Nebraska (1) 2-0 5 6 Stanford (1) 2-0 6 title. Kanani Danielson, Brittany Hewitt, and Emily Hartong were named to 7 Illinois 3-0 8 the all-tournament team, with Danielson selected Most Outstanding Player. 8 Washington 3-0 7 9 Florida 2-0 9 Hawai‘i in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic - Th e Rainbow 10 Hawai’i (1) 2-0 10 Wahine will be hosting their 24th Classic, having hosted the tournament every 11 Minnesota 1-1 12 year beginning in 1988. It was held at both at War Memorial Gym on Maui 12 UCLA 3-0 11 and the Neal Blaisdell Center until 1995 when it landed at its present location 13 Purdue 3-0 13 in the Stan Sheriff Center. UH has won the tournament nine times and has 10 14 Northern Iowa 3-0 14 second place fi nishes, but hasn’t won since 2004. Hawai‘i went undefeated in 15 Colorado State 3-0 15 each of its nine titles. 16 Oregon (1) 1-1 28 17 Oklahoma 3-0 16 18 Duke 3-0 17 On the Buckeyes - No. 22 Ohio State is making its fourth appearance in the 19 Iowa State 3-0 18 Classic. In their three previous trips, the Buckeyes are a combined 3-6 with two 20 San Diego 3-0 20 third place fi nishes and one fourth place fi nish. Versus the Rainbow Wahine 21 Dayton 3-0 19 they are winless in the tournament (0-3) and in their overall series record (0-5). 22 Ohio State 4-0 21 UH and OSU last met in 2002 where the Rainbow Wahine won in straight 23 Long Beach State 2-1 22 sets in a match between Top 10 teams. Lauren Duggins recorded 10 kills (.729 24 Michigan 3-0 24 attack %) and 11 digs and Kim Willoughby posted a match-high 18 kills. OSU 25 Florida State 3-0 30 is currently undefeated at 4-0. Th ey opened the season at the West Virginia Mountaineer Invitational where they defeated Valparaiso, New Hampshire, Bold indicates 2011 UH opponent Towson, and the host Mountaineers, all via sweeps. VOLLEYBALL MAGAZINE POLL (August 30) Facing the 49ers - UH and No. 23 Long Beach State have a long history in both the regular and postseason, but ironically the two teams will meet in the Rk School Record Prev. Rank Classic for the fi rst time. Hawai‘i is 23-15-1 lifetime against LBS, but 2-5 in the 1. California (9) 3-0 2 postseason. Th e two teams last met in 2006 in the second round of the NCAA 2.     KEY ADMINISTRATORS DAN GUERRERO KEY ATHLETIC Athletic Director • UCLA ’74 • 9th Year DEPARTMENT STAFF In his eight years as UCLA’s Director of Athletics, Daniel G. Guerrero has boldly placed his imprint on the school’s athletic program. Guerrero is one of the most respected and talented administrators in all of intercol- legiate athletics. He is the current president of the Division I Athletic Directors Associa- tion. In addition, he is the fi rst vice-president of the National Assn. of Collegiate Direc- tors of Athletics (NACDA) and a member of the NACDA Executive Committee. This past June, Guerrero completed a fi ve-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. As the chair in 2009-10, he was involved with the negotiation of the new $10.8 million, 14-year NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament television package Don Morrison Michael Sondheimer as well as the decision to expand the Tournament to 68 teams. Faculty Athletic Rep. Associate A.D. In Guerrero’s eight years as AD, he has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the nation for NCAA team championships (106) won, a number that continues to grow under his direction. In those eight years, UCLA teams have won 20 NCAA team titles (the highest total in the nation in that span) in 11 different sports, fi nished second 16 times and have had an additional 28 Top Five fi nishes (64 total). A staggering 152 teams (of 184 possible) have qualifi ed for NCAA post-season competition and the football team has appeared in seven bowl games.
