What is this guide about?

This guide provides an overview of the rich and fascinating business collections held by the ten local authority archives within the Greater Manchester Archives and Local Studies Partnership (GMALSP):

The 19th century saw a dramatic transformation in Manchester and its surrounding townships. It evolved from a rural landscape to one of the world’s first industrial cities, primarily as a result of its booming textile industry. However, innovative and successful businesses from all sectors made Greater Manchester their home, and the communities that we know today are built upon the foundations of these industries.

Some of these pivotal businesses have left a legacy of records which document not only business transactions, products and industrial processes but the working lives of men, women and children across the city region. It is these captivating collections of business records which we are focussing on in this research guide.

You can use this guide to explore the different types of business collections held by our archives. The guide has been organised according to the type of business, e.g. building & construction; business & professional services; chemicals etc., and then within these sections collections have been listed alphabetically.

Each item is linked to Discovery, the National Archives’ online catalogue. From there, you can read more about each company and find any reference numbers should you wish to view the records in person. Similarly, you can also search for items on GM Lives, Greater Manchester’s online archives catalogue (www.gmlives.org.uk).

Please note that not all of the business collections mentioned in this guide have been listed, and some are inaccessible due to their poor condition. For information about the contents of any of the collections listed below or to enquire about viewing archive material, please contact the relevant archive service (contact details can be found at the end of this document).

What are business records?

Business records are the information created, received, and maintained as evidence and information by an organisation or person, in pursuance of legal obligations or in the transaction of business.

Business archives are made up of records that companies or collecting repositories have chosen to keep permanently, for commercial, legal or historical reasons. The survival rate for business records can be quite low as preserving material is not usually a priority when a business is closing down.

The vast majority of extant business records are held by local authority record offices. Industries that were nationalised tend to have significant collections in The National Archives, and only a small amount of companies retain their own archives.

The ten GMALSP services collectively hold over 1,000 business collections relating to the economic life of Greater Manchester. This includes a wide range of different types of records, such as:

It is important to note that business archives are not limited to paper records – they can also contain electronic records and audio-visual material.

Using business records for research

Our rich business archive collections can be used to investigate and research a variety of topics.

Family historians can use them to explore their ancestor’s working and daily life, whether they were employed by the business or were a customer or shareholder. Records of particular interest might include:
