  • 2008 Theatre Season List
Adolpho Blaire’s 2018 Theatre Season List All Seasons announced as of January 31st, 2018 www.justdolphy.com 1 Welcome to this year’s THEATRE SEASON LIST - a special guide to the seasons and trends of the 2018 theatre season among regional and stock theatres throughout the United States. This list is a labor of love of mine and this also marks the 16th year since I began putting it together. As far as I know the information is correct but there have been mistakes in the past so always check with the theatre’s website as well as the AEA website, particularly for the union contract as these change from time to time. If you happen to find outdated or incorrect information, please contact me at [email protected] THE SEASON This season overwhelmingly finds it’s most popular title in Mamma Mia! with a whopping 33 showings. For plays, both A Raisin in the Sun and Noises Off have proved to be trendy with 8 theatres putting each title in their seasons. Even with a healthy amount of runs in 2017, newer titles like Million Dollar Quartet, Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The 39 Steps have continued to find interest around the country. First-run titles finding significant showings include Fun Home, Murder for Two, A Doll’s House Part 2, Shakespeare in Love, Skeleton Crew, Constellations, Heisenberg and The Wolves, – many of which should continue into 2019 seasons. And many beloved classics are making popular comebacks this season like Oklahoma! (celebrating its 75 anniversary), Singin’ in the Rain (also popular in 2017) as well as The Pirates of Penzance (which has rounded out the last 4 years as a popular title).

I was running through our new line-up at a board meeting this spring when someone asked me how I would summarize the upcoming season in a single sentence. Although it was BOARD OF TRUSTEES a challenge, after some thought, it was clear that this season is about John Keegan Kevin Millison making a home in the world. Many of the plays this year are about how Chair Vice President we find our way home again, either by returning to the places we know Earle J. Hereford Becky Lenaburg or by making a new home in a strange land. These adventurous artists President Secretary are exploring what it means to hold fast to the people and the places Amy Bautista Stellman Keehnel that make us who we are, while also embracing the transformational Vice President/Treasurer President Elect experiences that define our lives. It’s fitting on many levels that we Elizabeth Choy, M.D. Terri Olson Miller begin with Vice President Chair Emeritus The Odyssey, which truly epitomizes this theme of returning Business, meet to our origins. One of the oldest surviving stories in the western world, Adam Cornell Vice President The Odyssey follows the hero Odysseus on his harrowing journey as he struggles to make his way home following the Trojan War.

With this dialogue comes a demand for bold, diverse stories. In response to this need, Intiman Theatre is proud to present a city‐wide festival dedicated to great American plays by Black women that create community and deepen understanding. To create community‐engaged professional theatre, Intiman Theatre is producing the 2016 Festival in partnership with area organizations and co‐curator Valerie Curtis‐Newton. “Intiman is one of my artistic homes so doing this work with them is a special joy. Together, we are going to create a moment worthy of national attention. One that says these writers are valued ‐ even in the 5th whitest city in the country. That says ‘Look at how rich the fabric of our community is. Look at how we embrace the challenge of bridging our differences. Look at how we are willing to face the fear around confronting the issue of race.’ We believe that the stories these writers tell are important for everyone to hear. And we are just brave enough and just crazy enough to take the leap,” Curtis‐Newton said. From May 24 – October 2, Intiman Theatre and partner organizations will make it possible for the community to experience almost 20 plays by Black women through professional productions, training programs, readings and workshops.

Ideas matter. Stories matter. YOU, the audience, matters. Your passion for contemporary theater plays a vital and necessary role in producing new work. Now, more than ever, the power of stories and live theater create a deeper appreciation and understanding of the human experience. An experience that is intrinsically beautiful, elegant, turbulent, and messy. We are driven by bold works of art. New work that is bold enough to reflect our present culture back to us. New works produced without a safety net of tradition. These six plays will inspire you, stimulate your imagination, open your minds, and entertain you. Our 2019 playwrights — Deborah Brevoort, Joseph Dougherty, Ellen Fairey, Greg Kalleres, Dael Orlandersmith, Antonio Edwards Suarez, and Michael Weller — use the power of their words to introduce you to new ideas and diverse stories that will challenge, provoke, and ED HERENDEEN fascinate you. “ Now more than ever, we need our myths, our fables, our gods, MISSION and demons.
