5THAVENUE.ORG 7 THE Regency RENAISSANCE By ALBERT EVANS, Artistic Associate

From 1714 to 1837, Britain was ruled by four King Georges, including George III, who was the reigning monarch during the American Revolution. This “Georgian era” ended with the short reign of William IV and was followed by the accession of young Queen Victoria to the royal throne.

In 1811, George III was deemed “mad” and unfit to rule. His eldest son, the Prince of Wales, was appointed Prince Regent until his father’s death in 1820, when he was crowned George IV. Those nine years were known as the Regency years. The Regency years—during which Jane Austen wrote all her novels—began a sort of mini-renaissance in which art and culture flourished.

George IV was a spendthrift (and by all accounts a horrible man) who went on a self-aggrandizing spending spree, freely dipping into the public treasury to fund his whims. His handlers kept him away from politics and military exploits, leaving him to the unfettered pursuit of pleasure. The king’s dissolute way of life earned him the contempt of his subjects and dimmed the prestige of the monarchy. But his taste for the newest fashions spurred a change in the look and manners of the aristocracy and altered the societal structure of Britain as a whole.

Women were quick to adopt the latest French modes. Shedding the restricting fashions of the 1700s, they wore long, flowing, and very comfortable muslin dresses inspired by designs from classical antiquity and featuring the figure-flattering empire waistline. Men passed their powdered wigs and knee breeches to their servants, opting instead for natural hair and long trousers (which the obese George considered slimming).

Architecture was inspired by the noble columns and cornices of Greek and Roman buildings and by the fantastical Gothic churches of the Middle Ages. But the construction was practical and cheap— using stucco or painted plaster instead of stone and marble. Social relations were conducted on the public stage—there was always someone watching and listening. At private balls and public “assemblies” (for which admission was charged), dancing took place in rows. Men and women faced each other and couples took turns putting themselves on display, dancing between the rows as the others watched.

Despite the lack of privacy, women had a new sense of freedom and the more daring flouted the old conventions, as when headstrong Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice walks unchaperoned across three miles of muddy fields to visit her ailing sister and is both censured and praised by her neighbors.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Associate Producing Artistic Director and Casting Director from 2002 through 2009, when he became the Producing Artistic Director. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award, 2007), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz, and Smokey Joe’s Café. In 2014, he made his Broadway debut as the director of First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at Florida’s Asolo Repertory Theatre, where he directed the new musical Beatsville. Berry also directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the Producing Director for The 5th’s education and outreach programs. During that time, he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Theatre Awards: Honoring High School Musicals. He also substantially increased the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve nearly 75,000 students annually.

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) first joined The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2002 as Director of Theater Advancement and Development. She was appointed Managing Director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, marketing, fundraising, information services, and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors and external affairs. Prior to The 5th, she served as Director of Development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony, where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award®–winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington.
