Zur Rezeption der neuesten lateinamerikanischen Literatur vor dem Hintergrund der alten Stereotypen aus der Boom-Zeit Kein Zweifel – und allein die Tatsache dieses Kolloquiums legt Zeug- nis dafür ab –, in der Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung der lateiname- rikanischen Literatur ist rund um den Jahrtausendwechsel einiges in Bewegung geraten. Was schon länger als ein dumpfes Unbehagen mit den vorhandenen Paradigmen beziehungsweise eher wohl Verkaufs- etiketten spürbar war, hat Mitte der 1990er Jahre zu einer klaren Dis- tanzierung der “neuen Generation” von den alten Schreibweisen ge- führt. Welche Schreibweisen waren das nun? Es erübrigt sich wohl, noch einmal ausführlich zu rekapitulieren, unter welchen Etiketten die lateinamerikanische Literatur – vor allem in Europa und in den USA – lange Zeit präsentiert wurde. Magischer Realismus, lo real maravillo- so americano, ein kultureller Mestizaje-Begriff; allerdings gab es ne- ben diesem Mainstream auch eine zwar marginalisierte und regional begrenzte, nichtsdestoweniger auch in den USA und in Europa (zu- mindest in Frankreich) rezipierte und dann in der Figur von Cortázar auch mit dem Mainstream verbundene zweite Richtung: die argentini- sche literatura fantástica um Borges, Bioy Casares und viele andere. Translation is treated so disadvantageously, I want to suggest, partly because it occasions revelations that question the authority of dominant cultural values and institutions. And like every challenge to established reputations, it provokes their efforts at damage control, their various policing functions, all designed to shore up the questioned values and institutions by mystifying their uses of translation (Venuti, 1997:1). What is now infamously known as the “Three Percent Problem” describes the fact that only three of every one hundred books published in the U.S. and Great Britain annually are works in translation from another language. Some experts say that 3% is an overestimate and that the number of translations published each year in English may actually be less than 1% of the total. The U.S. exports its cultural products on a massive scale through television series, movies, music and books, but assimilates foreign cultural artifacts at a rate that pales in comparison. The fact that the U.S. has ideologically closed its borders to any outside influence has been called cultural suicide by some. -

History of Spanish Linguistics Several collective volumes have been published: Historiografía lingüística: líneas actuales de investigación, ed. Elena Battaner Moro, Vicente Calvo Fernández and Palma Peña Jiménez, 2 vols, Münster, Nodus, 2012, xi + 942 pp., contains papers on the history of the Spanish grammatical and lexicographical tradition, specially on 19th-c. authors, the influences between Spanish and Portuguese scholars, the American contribution to the history of Spanish Linguistics and Covarrubias’s Tesoro (1611) and, to a lesser extent, on the history of the codification of Spanish orthography and pronunciation. The volume also includes a round table discussion on the current status of Linguistics and its History in the Spanish Higher Education framework (118–40). Another two volumes show that 19th-c. linguistics continues to attract attention from scholars: Reflexión lingüística y lengua en la España del xix: marcos, panoramas y nuevas aportaciones, ed. Revista Iberoamericana, Vol. LXXXIII, Núms. 259-260, Abril-Septiembre 2017, 419-428 LAS UCRONÍAS EN LA LITERATURA ARGENTINA POR LUIS PESTARINI Biblioteca Nacional, Argentina La especulación sobre lo que hubiera sucedido si determinado acontecimiento histórico no se hubiese producido o lo hubiera hecho de un modo diferente, está presente en las ciencias sociales desde fines del siglo XIX, como señala Pablo Capanna (“La nariz…” 37-38). Habitualmente se considera que el libro que da origen de manera formal a la especulación contrafáctica histórica es la antología If It Had Happened Otherwise: Lapses into Imaginary History (1931), preparada por J. C. Squire. Este volumen incluye ensayos de personalidades reconocidas como Winston Churchill, quien especula sobre lo que hubiese pasado si el General Lee no hubiera ganado la batalla de Gettysburg, o G. K. Chesterton, que se atreve a reflexionar en lo que hubiera sucedido si Don Juan de Austria se hubiese casado con María, Reina de Escocia.1 Como se puede apreciar, para generar un escenario ucrónico o una historia alternativa, lo primero que hace el autor es seleccionar el punto de inflexión o divergencia y trazar, a partir de allí, un devenir histórico razonable. El primer ejemplo al que se suele recurrir cuando se quiere clarificar este concepto es un universo en el que el Eje ganó la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero son innumerables los puntos críticos desde donde se puede “cambiar” la historia: la Armada Invencible conquista Inglaterra y la Revolución Industrial no se produce, el Sur gana la Guerra de Secesión y Estados Unidos (los estados del norte) se convierten en una nación subdesarrollada, la Peste Negra extermina casi toda la población de Europa, de modo que la Civilización se desarrolla en China, América indígena, el Mundo Árabe y la India. -

El secreto de los flamencos, de Federico Andahazi, y el otro Aleph Jorge R. SAGASTUME Dickinson College, Pensilvania RESUMEN Este trabajo tiene el fin de discutir los temas principales tratados en la novela El secreto de los flamencos, de Federico Andahazi, partiendo de los textos que han regido su composición. Entre estos textos, el más influyente es “El Aleph”, de Jorge Luis Borges, que no sólo se menciona de manera específica en la novela sino que además es el tema, que desarrollado por Andahazi parte del concepto del Aleph borgesiano. El cuento de Borges, sin embargo, está regido por el Aleph del matemático Georg Cantor, quien creara un sistema epistémico transfinito y del que Borges se apropia para cuestionar lo que llamamos realidad y sugerir que nada, más allá del lenguaje, es real. Tanto Borges como Andahazi pueden clasificarse como escritores ‘ironistas’ que, siendo conscientes de la finitud de los sistemas epistémicos que como humanos utilizamos, desarrollan un tipo de escritura que consiste de la permanente redescripción metafórica, no con la intención de establecerse como vocabulario final sino con el propósito de mantener abierto el diálogo intelectual entre las diferentes disciplinas del conocimiento. El secreto de los Flamencos, by Federico Andahazi, and the Other Aleph ABSTRACT This essay has the purpose of discussing the main issues addressed in the novel The secret of the Flemish, by Federico Andahazi, departing from the texts that have determined its composition. Among these texts, the most influential has been Jorge Luis Borges’s “The Aleph”; not only that the story is mentioned specifically in Andahazi’s novel but also the ideas developed in it depart from the Borgesian concept of the Aleph.
