WELCOME TO THE 2021 PETWORTH FESTIVAL Dear All The Artistic Director’s Trail As I write the nation is tip-toeing back to something This year’s festival is as wide-ranging as ever, so to we all hope we will recognise as the ‘old normal’. Thursday 15 July | Leconfield Hall 11.15am – 12.15pm Dr Gill Clarke - The Bishop Otter Art Collection: The Vision Of Two Remarkable Women (talk) To link in with Kevis House Gallery’s Festival exhibition, this illustrated Rt Revd Ruth Bushyager talk explores how two remarkable women, Sheila McCririck, Head of Art at Bishop Otter College (1949-77), and Principal ‘Betty’ Murray (1948-70), acquired work by some of the great figures in twentieth- century British art to build post Second World War the Bishop Otter Art Collection (now University of Chichester). The distinguished collection comprises works by leading post-war artists and includes, amongst others, Ivon Hitchens, Peter Lanyon, Sandra Blow, Henry Moore and Gill Clarke John Hitchens. Jill Bray, whose work can be seen in the retrospective exhibition Earth Lines at Kevis House Gallery, also had work acquired by Sheila McCririck for the collection. Dr Gill Clarke has published widely on twentieth century British Art and guest-curated art exhibitions in the south of England, the next of which will be at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth. Street entertainers, music, buskers, stilt walkers and the frankly surreal and bizarre. Do also take the opportunity to drop into the Leconfield Hall whilst in town to see artwork created by local school children during the course of the latest Petworth Festival/West Sussex Arts Society PopUp Art project, and look out for Children’s Workshops heritage walks around Petworth where you can discover some of the many nooks and crannies in our beautiful town. He has travelled the world as soloist, collaborator and teacher. His discovery of contemporary music through the works of Kurtag, Kagel and Ligeti in his teenage years opened a new and vital avenue that he continues to explore with huge enthusiasm alongside his passion for jazz and world music.
