A corner of Corsica that is forever Finland Today we’re on a pilgrimage, near Calvi. To a place that was marked by tragedy but nonetheless holds a haunting beauty: an innocuous left-hand corner just before a wooded valley, whose peace these days is in stark contrast to the fiery violence of the accident that claimed two young men’s lives at the height of their powers. We’re talking of course about the spot where Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto perished more than a quarter of a century ago. It’s a pilgrimage that many people have made, but Henri’s younger brother Harri hasn’t been there yet. He says that one day he will, but for now, he’s not quite ready. For Harri, it’s all still as raw as it was on that terrible day in 1986: he says he finds it almost impossible to believe that so much time has already passed. But there is a consolation. “As long as people keep remembering him, it means that Henri will never really die,” says Harri – and that’s why it’s important to go. If only to spend a few quiet moments next to a memorial that is faded, cracked and worn – not just through a constant battle against the elements but also against the tide of people who have come to see it, touch it, and leave a few tributes before they go. Henri Toivonen occupied a special place in peoples’ imaginations, so it’s no surprise that his memorial stone is a bit like Jim Morrison’s grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. “Everyone loved Henri because he had such a straightforward personality: I think it all goes back to our mother and our father and our life at home,” adds Harri. “We had a very happy childhood and our parents made us the people we are. In all our life together me and Henri only ever had one big fight, which is remarkable.” Henri’s father, of course, was Pauli Toivonen: the reluctant winner of the controversial 1966 Monte Carlo Rally (when the dominant Minis were disqualified for a trumped-up headlamp infringement) as well as the 1968 European Rally Championship – of which Corsica now forms a part. Such was the family’s mutual trust that Henri asked his brother to prepare his ice notes for the Monte Carlo Rally, which he won in 1986. After what had happened 20 years earlier, Pauli said with relief when Henri crossed the finish ramp first, fair and square, that the ‘name of Toivonen had finally been cleared.’ Less than four months later Henri was no longer with us. “What people maybe don’t know about him is what a loving brother he was,” concludes Harri. “I’m four years younger and he was always looking out for his little brother, just as he had done all his life. It really doesn’t feel like more than 25 years have passed. He was my brother and my best friend and I think about him probably every day.” As the Tour de Corse heads to Calvi tomorrow, we’ll all be thinking of Henri too. Often referred to as the golden era of rallying, Group B was introduced in 1983 to replace Group 4. The outgoing Group 4 regulations required a minimum of 400 cars to be produced in order to gain homologation status as a rally car. The new Group B regulations only specified a production run of only 200 cars for homologation, along with fewer restrictions on design and the technology employed. These more liberated regulations resulted in some of the fastest and most competitive rallying ever seen. As a member of the Fiat Group, Ferrari were assigned with the on track competition duties, while Lancia were entrusted with the rallying.

  • 1968 Monte Carlo Rally – First Victory in the 911
1968 Monte Carlo Rally – first victory in the 911 The Porsche 911 took three consecutive wins in the Monte Carlo Rally, with Vic Elford and David Stone delivering the first of these victories in 1968. In an ideal development for Porsche, the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally was the first to be subject to new rules that removed restrictions relating to cubic capacity classes and the use of professional and amateur drivers. The system applied as of that year boiled down to a single maxim: fastest car wins! Another factor that was markedly different to previous years was the weather. The 37th Monte Carlo Rally was held in almost spring-like temperatures, with these mild conditions extending up into the mountains. The teams demanded racing tyres, but the available stocks proved insufficient. This led to additional tyres featuring a soft mixture, little tread and no spikes being flown in by the tyre manufacturers via Nice and transported to the special tests. While the French driver Gérard Larrousse dominated the early stages of this edition of the Monte Carlo Rally in his Renault Alpine 1300, Vic Elford and David Stone bided their time in the 911 S 2.0 and waited for an opening. The ‘night of the long knives’, which was open to the sixty fastest teams, initially saw Larrousse further extend his lead before Elford hit back. Completing the special test at the Col de la Couillole nearly a minute faster than the Alpine, he duly raced into the lead. The final tests then saw the top drivers take even greater risks.

  • Twists and Turns of Corsica up Next for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing
March 31, 2017 Toyota Motor Corporation Motorsport Marketing Division Tour de Corse: Preview Twists and turns of Corsica up next for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team and its drivers, Jari-Matti Latvala and Juho Hänninen head to the island of Corsica for round four of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) from April 6 to 9. The classic Tour de Corse is Franceʼs round of the WRC and the first pure asphalt event of the season, following the ice-coated roads of Monte-Carlo, snow of Sweden and gravel of Mexico. Learning and developing the Yaris WRC remains the clear priority in the first season of Toyotaʼs WRC return, despite an extremely positive start with the team currently second in both the manufacturersʼ and driversʼ standings. Yaris WRC test An event that returned to the calendar in 2015 after six years away, the Tour de Corse is famous for its narrow and twisty asphalt stages, which give it the nickname ʻThe Rally of 10,000 Cornersʼ. With mountainous stages lined by rock faces on one side and steep drops on the other, as well as numerous surface changes, there is plenty to catch drivers out. Abrasive asphalt and long stages also mean that tyre wear is a factor. The rally is based in Bastia but will begin in the islandʼs capital Ajaccio on Friday April 7, with the dayʼs action consisting of two loops of two stages, averaging 30 kilometres each, which are run twice. There is no full midday service; instead just a change of tyres.

  • Porsches Turnea Tables on Minis in Monte Carlo Rally - but Renault but the "Flying Bricks" Did Not Do Too Badly
WINNING Porsche 911T of Vic Elford and David Stone on the final mountain circuit run where Alpines' opposition collapsed. ENACIOUS Londoner Vic Elford and his navigator, David Stone, got their revenge on the BMC Minis by winning this year's Monte TCarlo Rally in their Porsche 911 T. Another Porsche, driven by Finns Pauli Toivonen and Martti Tiukkanen, came second. The Porsches triumphed despite the incantations of BMC com petitions manager Peter Browning, who prayed for snow, ice, and all that slip pery stuff just before the final speed trials. Last year the weather man heeded Browning's prayers and the Minis swept home to victory over Elford's Porsche, thanks to their superior slip and-slide handling. This time, however, the tables were reversed. The weather stayed dry, so did the roads - and the Porsches were able to make full use of their power advan tage to topple the Minis. • Porsche at the Monte Carlo Rally
Natural talent Porsche at the Monte Carlo Rally The Monte Carlo Rally is rightly regarded as the “queen of rallies”: It is a treacherous beast, a mammoth undertaking, where only the best can emerge victorious. And almost 50 years ago, in 1968, Porsche achieved this very feat for the first time – with the 911 T. Racing success is in the DNA of Porsche sports cars, particularly the 911. The first series model had barely hit the market when in January 1965, the now equally legendary Porsche employees Herbert Linge and Peter Falk jumped into one of the new 2+2 seaters and set off for the Monte Carlo Rally. Despite, or perhaps because of the heavy snowfall, they put in a stunning performance with the rear- engined, rear-wheel-drive vehicle, reaching the finishing line in the port of Monaco in fifth position – an impressive debut. Meanwhile, second place went to the Porsche 904 GTS driven by Eugen Böhringer and his co-driver Rolf Wütherich, who was sitting alongside James Dean when he was fatally injured in a car crash in 1955. Power, traction, agility and reliability: These are the features that continue to characterise the 911 to this day. Back then, they shaped its talent as a veritable rally car, and the first titles soon came pouring in: In 1966 and 1967, Günter Klass from Stuttgart, the speedy Pole Sobieslaw Zasada and racing all-rounder Vic Elford won no fewer than three European Rally Championships – the top league in the sport at the time – behind the wheel of a 911.

  • Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events.

2030 RALLYCAR PROJECT TRANSPORTATION DESIGN THESIS 2016 HENRI HOKKANEN LAHTI UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES © Henri Hokkanen 2016 Abstrakti Vuonna 1986 suomen kirkkain rallilupaus Henri Toivonen menehtyi onnettomuudessa Korsikan rallissa.
