[email protected] Submission #55 A PAPER FOR PRESENTATION TO JOURNALISM RESEARCH IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST, NOVEMBER 19-21, ZURICH ABSTRACT Canada exhibits one of the world’s highest levels of media ownership concentration, due in part to a failure of regulation. In an attempt to ensure that a portion of the benefits from broadcasting takeovers and acquisitions accrued to the public, the broadcasting regulator Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission established the Public Benefits program in the late 1980s. Under the program, a minimum of 10 percent of the value of acquired broadcasting licences was required to be devoted to worthwhile initiatives. In the Cdn $2.3-billion takeover of television network CTV by Bell Canada Enterprises in 2000, however, a portion of the Cdn$230 million Public Benefits package was devoted to funding a Canadian Media Research Consortium established between several universities. Mandated to “focus on the development of Canadian data for use in media planning,” the CMRC issued its first report in 2003. A Report Card on the Canadian News Media was criticized for flawed methodology and was cited as an example of “administrative” marketing research performed to the benefit of media owners rather than to the benefit of the public. The CMRC issued a five-year retrospective study titled The Credibility Gap: Canadians and their News Media in 2008 that addressed some of the earlier methodological flaws and perhaps as a result reached different conclusions. -

Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 2 Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 Message To our clients and friends both in and beyond the entertainment and media industry : Welcome to the 2010 edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Indian Entertainment and Media (E&M) Outlook, covering the forecast period of 2010–2014. Our forecasts and analysis for this edition focus on eight major E&M industry segments and one emerging segment. Each segment details out the key trends observed and challenges faced apart from providing the prospects for the segment. In the industry overview section, we have highlighted the key theme observed during 2009 and what we perceive as future trends in the coming years. We have a chapter on the tax and regulatory impact on the various E&M segments and for the very first time we have included a chapter on how technology can be leveraged in the E&M industry. In 2009, the economy severely impacted the world, translating into steep declines in advertisement as well as consumer spending. India though impacted, did manage to show growth with increased consumer spending as well as innovative action on the part of the industry. Against this backdrop, across the world, except certain markets, speed of digital spending increased due to changing consumer behavior as well as technology available to deliver the same. In India, while the spend on digital media is likely to grow, it is unlikely that it will dominate in the forecast period. This is largely due to the relative unavailability as well as unaffordability of the broadband and mobile infrastructure. -

1 50th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED The 50th Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards were presented Saturday evening, June 5th for the second time via webcast only. The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statues. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2020 calendar year. A total of 912 entries were received, 765 English and 195 Spanish in 68 English Categories and 34 Spanish Categories. Nominations were announced on May 5th with 195 English and 76 Spanish. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to our accountant. The Spanish and English awards are judged and scored separately and then presented at the ceremony. 353 Emmy® statues were handed out to 263 individuals. The top two recipients were Maikel D'Agostino, Photograpoher/Editor, KUVS Unvision 19, Sacramento with ten, and Jonathan Bloom, Video Journalist, KNTV NBC Bay Area, with Six. The Emmy® is awarded to individuals but there is a lot of interest in the station counts: KNTV NBC Bay Area took home 16 for the English contest and KUVS Univision 19 with 12 for the Spanish contest. The overall Excellence Emmy® awards went to KNTV NBC Bay Area, English and KUVS Univision 19, Spanish. The prestigious Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can award was presented to Wayne Freedman, Reporter, KGO ABC 7, San Francisco. -

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY To the Residents and Visitors of Southwest Florida, Some of you consider Lee County, Florida, your family’s vacation destination, while many others enjoy Southwest Florida year-round as they live, work and play. Lee County, located along Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, has a year-round population of nearly 700,000 residents, but climbs to over 1.3 million during the winter tourist, spring break and baseball spring-training seasons. While we all enjoy beautiful weather and lifestyle that Southwest Florida provides, we must also be prepared to overcome occasional threats. Each year is different, and history only reveals the past. However, we learn more each year, and our preparations are more refined. Due to the unpredictability, preparing to respond to these hazards must be as much a part of our lives as driving to work, or walking on the beach. Most of us realize the important of creating a plan to address as least some common hazards. Unfortunately, realization and preparation rarely prevent a disaster. Well prepared people and property survive more often, recover more quickly, and return to normal more easily. At the Lee County Department of Public Safety, we ask that you go just a bit further, and develop a “culture of preparedness” in your home. In doing so, share the plans of preparedness with your family and friends. Emergency Preparation can seem a daunting task, but this All Hazards Guide is filled with information and resources to get you on your way! On the most fundamental level, preparation involves acknowledging the real threat, identifying your options ahead of time, securing supplies and resources, and then when necessary, putting your plan into action. -
