OUR OPINION FGC anglers land regional recognition

his fishing story is turning out to be one great tale. And no exaggerating is needed. T In its inaugural season, the Florida Gateway College fishing team has made strides and earned regional recognition climbing to No. 5 in the Southeastern Region of Major League Fishing’s Abu Garcia College Series. Fresh off its latest tournament in Alabama last month, FGC climbed to that lofty regional ranking and set itself up for a big season finale in October in Tennessee. It’s been an unbelievable start for the FGC program, which continues to strive for greatness and a national ranking. Led by a group of renowned area fishermen in coaches Hunter Bland, Rob Chapman, Shaw Grigsby and Ron Ryals, FGC’s program has quickly put itself on the map. With every tournament and every limit caught, the team which features local faces as well is growing in relevance and respect within the . All of that is a win for the college. The team’s success brings positive accolades and notoriety to the school and our community. We can’t wait to watch the FGC anglers soon reel in national recognition and a trip to the national tournament next.

PREP FOOTBALL Bucs set for Monday Springing into action night spring game against Hamilton County

By JAMIE WACHTER [email protected]

BRANFORD — Are you ready for some football? For their foray into Monday Night Football, Branford coach Tim Clark is hoping his Buccaneers are plenty rowdy when Hamilton County and Bell visit Cleve Sikes Field at Buccaneer Stadium at 7 p.m. Monday for a spring jambo- ree. “Really the standard that we want to see is the hustle and effort and physicality of the groups the last few years have really had here,” Clark said. “Man, if they play hard and they play physical, we’ll correct mistakes and coach up mistakes. I just want to see that Photos by BRENT KUYKENDALLD/Lake City Reporter effort from everyone that steps on CHS quarterback Evan Umstead (16) gets a pass off during Columbia’s annual Purple & Gold game on Friday. the field.” That physical nature has helped the Buccaneers reach heights the past few years under Clark the program hasn’t experienced in years, decades even. Last year’s 6-2 mark was the program’s third straight winning season, the most since Clark was a player at BHS and the program had four straight successful campaigns from 2007- 10. The three playoff appearances were the first since 2000 and last year’s home playoff game against Fort White was the Bucs’ first since 1976. Now, those same traits can help the Bucs fill in holes in the roster caused by graduation. “We’ve got a lot of question marks at positions on both sides of the ball,” Clark admitted, while noting the spring practice period Quarterback Cohen David scrambles up the middle has been a benefit. Friday night. “I’m pretty pleased with where we’re at. Especially young guys stepping into positions they’ve never played before or older guys that were on one side of the ball and now have to play both. I believe we’re ahead of where I thought we would be.” One key player switching posi- tions for Branford will be rising senior Kyson Johnson, who will be taking over the reins of the Buc offense from Seth Heiderman, the program’s all-time leading passer. In two years, Johnson has com- pleted 4 of 6 passes for 178 yards with four touchdowns and no inter- ceptions. His only pass last year was a 13-yard touchdown in a 12-7 win against Interlachen. As a soph- omore, the 6-foot-1, 198-pounder threw three touchdowns against Bell. But most of his impact so far has come elsewhere with the ball in his
