The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, May 18, 2021 * The Boston Globe Red Sox plan to increase roster versatility soon with promotion of Danny Santana Alex Speier Man-for-all-positions Danny Santana could join the Red Sox roster as soon as the current six-game road trip. Santana has hit .364/.423/.682 with two homers, a double, and a steal in six games with High A Greenville and Triple A Worcester. He has played shortstop, second, third, left, and center in those half-dozen contests. “He’s almost there,” manager Alex Cora said. “We’ve been moving him around all over the place. He’s moving well. “This is a guy, it gives us another alternative. Let’s see where it takes us. We feel good about where he’s at, not only physically, but as a hitter and as a player.” Santana, 30, had an April 30 opt-out in his minor league deal, but he and the Red Sox agreed to push that date into May when the start of his season was delayed by a foot infection in spring training. He’ll remain in Worcester at least through Tuesday, but his ability to move all over the field and switch-hit could prove particularly valuable during Boston’s weekend series against Philadelphia, during which National League rules will be in effect (with no designated hitter). In 2019, Santana hit .283/.324/.534 with 28 homers and 21 steals in 130 games for the Rangers. But in 2020, while limited to 15 games by an elbow injury that ultimately required modified Tommy John surgery in September, his numbers slid to .145/.278/.273.

The 2020 Guide to the Florida Grapefruit League www.FloridaGrapefruitLeague.com SPRING TRAINING Baseball is a great, all-American sport that I really enjoyed growing up. Baseball teaches you the value of hard work, teamwork and performance under pressure. For decades, cities throughout Florida have been fortunate to host MLB Spring Training games in the Grapefruit League, including my hometown of Dunedin where I played Little League. With our beautiful weather, top notch facili- ties and unrivaled fanbase, I look forward to another successful MLB Spring Training season and wish every team participating in the Grapefruit League the very best. — Governor Ron DeSantis Welcome to one of the highlights of the sports year in the State of Florida. The 2020 Major League Baseball Florida Spring Training season. For just over 30 days in February and March, Florida is in the spotlight of the national sports eye as Major League Baseball players prepare for their upcoming seasons. The 2020 season brings new hope for all 15 teams involved and a couple of new and renovated facilities. The Atlanta Braves begin play in the brand new CoolToday Park in North Port and the Toronto Blue Jays return to Dunedin for renovated TD Ballpark. Here’s hoping baseball fans visiting Florida in 2020 have an opportunity to check out those new ballparks as well as the other 11 that make up the Florida Grapefruit League. The Boston Red Sox Friday, May 21, 2021 * The Boston Globe J.D. Martinez’s last-ups blast highlights rally of the Red Sox season, beating Jays Peter Abraham DUNEDIN, Fla. — J.D. Martinez was perhaps another choice word or two from being ejected in the seventh inning, when he argued with umpire Mark Wegner following a called third strike on a close pitch. Martinez, who rarely bickers with the umps, returned to the dugout hoping he would get another chance. It came in the ninth inning with the game on the line, and he belted a two-out, two-run homer to lift the Red Sox to an 8-7 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. Martinez didn’t miss his pitch, sending a hanging slider from Rafael Dolis deep into the Florida night. It was his 12th home run of the season and the 250th of his career. “I was just trying to go up there and hit it hard,” Martinez said. “It was a big win.” Martinez, who was released by the Astros in 2014, said he never imagined he’d hit 250 homers. The first-place Sox (27-18) took two of three from the Blue Jays and have won five of seven overall. It was their 17th comeback victory. Matt Barnes closed the Jays out for his 10th save in 11 chances. He struck out three, working around a two- out walk with an overpowering fastball as the Sox-centric crowd of 1,562 celebrated. “What an amazing win. What a great game. What a big-league ‘W,’” manager Alex Cora said.
