Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth. -

The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. A total of four players were taken tying the school-record of most selections in a draft with the 1992 and 2008 squads. Brett Netzer became the fourth-highest selection in program history going in the third round to Boston while Colton Laws (7th round-Toronto) and T.J. Nichting (9th round- Baltimore) completed the top-10 selections. Zach Jarrett became the fourth selection going in the 28th round to Baltimore. A year later in 2018, Josh Maciejewski (10th-New York Yankees) and Reece Hampton (12th-Detroit) made it six draftees in two years while Harris Yett also went to Baltimore in 2019. • Charlotte set a new school-record with a .971 fielding percentage in 2016 and immediately followed that season with a .978 showing to re-set the benchmark for best fielding team in the program's history. Both seasons led Conference USA. • The Metro Conference Tournament Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1993. All-NCAA Regional performance of Brian VandenHeuvel that year. • The NCAA Tournament appearance by at-large selection in 1998 (only 48 teams qualified then). • Winning a pair of NCAA Regional games, including eliminating N.C. State in 2007. • The back-to-back Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, as well as automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008, including the team's first-ever postseason wins and regional finals appearance in 2007.. -
