www.prinseps.com 4 - PRINSEPS - Spring Auction Catalogue - 2018 5 DIRECTOR'S NOTE

We are excited to share with you our upcoming Spring 2018 auctions.

The first, an ‘Original Prints’ auction. Original art works that were incepted as prints using print-making techniques as Etching, Serigraphy, Lithography, Woodcuts, etc. This is the first such auction in , the first auction devoted to solely to ‘Original Prints’. Certainly, in overseas markets such as the US, many price records for art works are held by serigraphs of Andy Warhol. Here a distinction needs to be made, between ‘original prints’ and mechanically reproduced prints, the two are very different.

This auction includes Zarina Hashmi (a version currently on display at NY MET) and etchings from the 1960's. Possibly the most iconic work of Ramanendranath Chakraborty. Husain's ‘Benaras’, the entire set of eight serigraphs created in 1973, are a superb example of his artistry.

The second, our Modern and Contemporary, auction also focuses on a broad spectrum of artists. Much of the auction has art works that have never been seen before. While each work has been carefully curated, We will highlight a few here. Our 'Alpana' (Flower as landscape), a double sided work on plywood, used to hang at the entrance of all of his exhibitions including at his older 'bagh-bazar' residence. The seated lady (verso) is from his early experiments and executed in the style of a 'Kalighat Pat'. This dates the work to the beginning of his artistic career as he abandoned commissioned portraits - and the very beginnings of modernism in India.

'Wounds' is the language of Somnath Hore's abstraction. The paper pulp based ‘Wounds’ series has been displayed at the Tate. We present a rare ‘Wounds’ bronze sculpture created by the extension of the same wax process and made subsequent to the Bangladesh war.

Two exceptionally rare and early Manjit Bawa’s are on offer, one from 1977 – a representation of a “form” . These "forms" can be clearly seen in his serigraphs from the same year. The other a superb pastel on paper from 1991 depicting a bull. Lastly, a letter from Rabindranath Tagore introducing Abanindranath Tagore as an artist – a superb historical artefact! The auction includes rare works by A.P. Santhanaraj and L. Munuswamy – masters from the South .

While a few have been discussed above, all art works selected have been for a special reason(s). We leave the process of further discovery and research to you. We at Prinseps would love to have further conversations on any of the art works.

40 - PRINSEPS - Spring Auction Catalogue - 2018 41 42 - PRINSEPS - Spring Auction Catalogue - 2018 Bangladesh War, Somnath Hore, Wounds …

"Man's history is waiting in patience for the triumph of the insulted man," “Triumph he had, but at a terrible price. With the subcontinent at war, and the new-born land still wracked by bone-shattering poverty, the joy in Bangladesh was necessarily tempered by sorrow.” (Rabindranath Tagore)

“Lean, light of foot, bright-eyed, Somnath can be seen around the Santiniketan campus, but always in a hurry. He is always going somewhere like a man on a mission. And his work too has a missionary focus. On a summer morning the world glows with sunlight, the flowers load the trees, the breeze wafts around a heady kind of perfume but in Somnath’s vision it is the spectacle of man’s suffering that steals the show. In his paintings and sculptures, in prints and drawings it is invariably the same. This has been so since a long time. Since he saw the disastrous Bengal famine more than forty years ago; and behind it the panorama of rural poverty when still a youth. He goes over and over this obsessively. In everything he sees he reads its gesture of tragedy. “ (The Vision of Somnath Hore, K.G.Subramanyan, April 1986)

“A new awareness was created in me. In 1969–71 society was in a state of upheaval and chaos. A section of the youth was restless; there was panic and terror amongst the common people. Wounds is what I saw everywhere around me. A scarred tree, a road gouged by a truck tyre, a man knifed for no visible or rational reason. A new concept was born. The subject was eliminated, only wounds remained.” (Tate Modern , Somnath Hore Exhibition)

At play in Hore's ‘Wounds’ is a new abstract visual language used to register trauma, but one that is open to multiple interpretations and meanings. ( and the Bangladesh War, Devika Singh)

The making of white on white prints involved producing gashed and blistered surfaces on clay or wax plates and making their moulds in cement which became the matrices for the prints. The medium and process point towards a common ground between print-making and sculpture. He initially worked on clay but his later prints were using wax plates which he found more suitable. And it by tearing, folding and joining similar wax plates his first sculptures were made. (R. Siva Kumar)
