ABSTRACT This paper explores transformation of Norwegian Special Operation Forces, raising the hypothesis that current organizational structure is inconsistent with future roles and missions. The inconsistency is derived from official documents pertaining to the transformation of Norwegian Armed Forces for the period 2005-2008. Where the military recommends disbanding two existing units, Marinejegerkommandoen and Hærens Jegerkommando, to re-commission a single unit under a single, unspecified command, the Government insists on maintaining the status quo. A likely consequence is a sub-optimal development of NORSOF as a strategic asset. Using the dichotomy of direct action vs. indirect action capabilities as a framework for understanding how Special Operation Forces (SOF) in general conduct operations, the author claims NORSOF possess capabilities only for the former. Analysis of the forces themselves, the security environment, and the strategies adopted to deal with current and future threats leads to the conclusion that NORSOF will increase its relevance by acquiring competency in indirect capabilities. If indirect capabilities become a core task for NORSOF, then the current organization should be maintained. If not, both units will continue to maintain overlapping tasks in direct capabilities. Future transformation issues will then evolve based on traditional arguments related to the maritime and land domains. 14. This will truly be a new committee experience, as you must really delve into the history of these Kingdoms and figure out how to cooperate with each other without sending everyone into their demise. To begin, in the Towards the Kalmar Union Specialized Agency, delegates will represent influential characters from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which include prominent knights, monarchs, nobles, and important religious figures who dominate the political, military and economic scenes of their respective Kingdoms. The impending issues that will be discussed at the meeting in Kalmar, Sweden include the future of the Danish and Norwegian crowns after the death of the sole heir to the thrones, Olaf II. Here, two distant relatives to Valdemar IV have a claim to the throne and delegates will need to decide who will succeed to the throne. The second order of business is to discuss the growing German presence in Sweden, especially in major economic cities.

Det vil være sider ved marinejegerkulturen som de som har jobbet i eller med Forsvaret vil kjenne igjen. Det er noe grunnleggende som er likt i krigerkulturer. Drill og militær ferdighetstrening, sterkt samhold og harde overgangsritualer finner vi i alle militære styrker. Andre dimensjoner ved kulturen vil være mer gjenkjennelig for de som har jobbet med spesialoperasjoner. Spesialstyrker går gjennom en lang og hard seleksjonsperiode og de selekteres etter litt andre kriterier enn konvensjonelle styrker. Kulturelt er spesialstyrkene mer egalitære og ledelse utøves på en annen måte i spesialoperasjonen enn det som er vanlig i svært hierarkiske organisasjoner. I MJK dyrker de frem annerledestenking, kreativitet og fleksibilitet. I spesialoperasjoner er mennesket den viktigste faktoren – ikke utstyr og teknologi. Fordi operatørene ofte jobber i små team, langt fra hovedkvarter og sjefer, må de ha kalibrert det indre kompasset.

    7 The Challenges and Dynamics of Alliance Policies: Norway, NATO and the High North Wrenn Yennie Lindgren & Nina Græger This chapter sets out to discuss two major framework conditions for Norwegian foreign, security and defence policy: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the High North.1 Having to address increasingly heterogeneous security concerns and agendas, how do alliances shape their members’ foreign, security and defence policies? And how do the specific challenges related to the High North, such as Russia and other states’ policy agendas, form Norwegian responses and policies? In answering these questions, we aim to explore the framework conditions in a contemporary and historical context.     Gender-Mixed Army Dorm Rooms, 50% Women and All-Female Special Forces Training : How Does Norway’s Radical Attempt to Integrate Women in the Military Work ? By Nina Rones Gender-mixed dormitory rooms have been introduced to ease the integration of female soldiers into the Norwegian Armed Forces. This has gained tremendous inter- national attention,1 while research has assigned several positive effects to such unisex rooms. In essence, researchers have argued that sharp distinctions and less understanding between men and women will ensue “if female soldiers live in their own barracks or serve in their own platoons” (Hellum, 2016, p.30) ; on the contrary, unisex rooms provide them with intense exposure to the opposite gender, thus promoting a gender-positive secondary socialization that will deemphasize gender differences as well as reduce sexual harassment and unwanted masculine behaviour.2 Intense exposure will allegedly change gender stereotypical prejudices and combat discriminatory attitudes towards female leaders.3 Also, findings such as less gossiping among girls and increased team cohesion, respect, tolerance and non-sexual camaraderie across genders are ascribed to the close contact that occurs between men and women in these rooms.4 Although these researchers seem to agree that gender-mixed rooms enhance gender equality in male-dominated military organizations, there is disagreement about the various methods used, the interpretation of shared findings, and the conclusions that can be drawn from them.5 In particular, Ellingsen and colleagues (2016) urge caution in elevating the apparent success of mixed rooms to a “grand theory” where the coming together of women and men will almost magically result in gender equality and de-sexualized relationships.
