Churches Reopen for Business Dear Friends,

This virus has affected all our lives and the life of the church, in so many ways. It has been challenging for all of us. Now, we face the next phase of recovery as we continue to move forward to restart the economy, our jobs, our schooling, to open our shops, restaurants and pubs, and to open our churches. While I cannot address the whole of the United Kingdom’s recov - ery, I wanted to let you know how we are getting on with the re-opening of our churches in Binstead, Havenstreet and Wootton.

With the Bishop’s permission, we have opened our churches for individual private prayer. The church opening hours are included below. This past week, we also received permission from the government and Bishop Christopher to open the churches for public worship from July 4, as well as for weddings and funerals – all of this with the understanding that appropriate physical distancing and hygiene measures are in place. And, with the understanding that physical distancing and hygiene measures are specific to church capacity and other building considerations.

With the Bishop’s permission, we have opened our churches for individual private prayer. This is great news, but it doesn’t mark the end of the pandemic or the church’s responsibility to remain extremely careful about the safety of those who choose to worship with us. We have a lot of work to do to get to the opening of the churches. There is a lot of information and many regula - tions to sift through and then to implement to ensure we accomplish a safe start.

At present, we are working through several different ideas and scenarios to address to the various needs and age groups of our many congregations across the parish churches of Binstead, Havenstreet and Wootton. And we are on the cusp of various ‘cunning plans.’ No promises – as we live in strange times - but, we are hoping to open our churches for public worship some point in August – hopefully. I hope that comes to fruition. continued on Page 2

The (Socially-Distanced) Hunting of Success Firstly, a disclaimer: I am in no way, shape or form considered green-fin - gered … quite the opposite in reality! My houseplants get just two chances: Die or Thrive (on a diet of drought and flood). I certainly can't seem to keep aloe vera plants alive; they're just too sensitive for these harsh conditions! Plants in the garden usually get similar treatment, with some water thrown at them from time to time and an occasional waving about of the secateurs, but otherwise they are pretty much left to their own devices. However, this year has been very different, for the garden as for humans. Due to the recent months of lockdown, we have spent more time at home. As a result, the garden has had to put up with far more attention than usual. Whether the plants have appreciated that attention - or not - remains to be seen! I confess that I do actually like gardening, but my attempts at coaxing greenery into life are not always particularly success - ful. Gardening is very soothing for the soul! Over the Spring and Summer of 2020, I've rather enjoyed fixing and reorganizing different areas of our little space. Let me tell you something about the Hunting of Success in our garden ... The Installing of the Fountain (of Life) Early last Autumn, I obtained a fair-sized Grecian-style water feature for free. It would otherwise have gone to the tip, so I crammed it into the back of the car, brought it home and popped it in The Shed (more on that later). The intention was to "do something" with it this year, but over winter it stayed where it was. The plan was to have it set up somewhere in the back garden with a solar-powered pump to provide a calming trickle of water. The first task was to clear a space and level the area, which took a couple of days' hard graft including much earth-moving and grappling with the roots of my nemesis … bindweed! With a few plants and some large The Bridge stones in place and following some initial minor tinkering with the water is pump, it works perfectly and sounds rather like the bell from the " Hunting Wootton’s community of the Snark ".
