Gardens, then owned by Sir John Thorneycroft, described in a list of Hants. and I.W. gardens - undated but probably pre-1914 WestHill Church Road Bembridge SZ 64277 An elegant property set in large grounds and constructed in 1906 in the Edwardian 27/07/2007 88255 half timbered style, for the Rev Francis, Vicar of Bembridge. The steep tiled roof and prominent chimneys are key elements of the period. The interior includes quality oak panelling and marble fireplaces. St Veronicas Lane End Bembridge SZ 41288 Three storey stone built traditional property extended and remodelled into a hospice 25/01/2008 Road 89250 by the Sisters of the Compassion of Jesus in the 1930’s. Internal features of quality period detail include linen fold oak panelling and doors and a small chapel area to the rear incorporating two stained glass windows. Bembridge Lane End Bembridge SZ 6576 The current ILB building dates back to 1867 and although recently extended by the 02/06/2008 Lifeboat Station Road 8825 RNLI, has survived well. It incorporates interesting stained glass and exhibits a low key domestic style in keeping with the street scene. It relates to an important series of events and so has strong local and cultural significance. Constructed shortly after a shipping disaster specifically as the village's first lifeboat station as a result of public subscription by the City of Worcester. War memorial Bembridge SZ 6439 Designed by Percy Stone and dedicated in 1920 by the Rural Dean Rev High Le 02/06/2008 Fleming, the memorial is to the dead of the wars of the 20th century. There is also an 8821 additional plaque to mark the contribution of 41 royal marine commando in WW2. Portland Stone steps. War memorial Church Binstead SZ 5723 A cross of remembrance on 3 stage hexagonal base dedicated to 36 men and 1 02/06/2008 9226 woman from the village that died in WW1 and WW2. Tin Chapel, (Christ Blythe Shute Blackgang SZ 4845 Tin tabernacle erected by 1908 by Mr C Reade and described as associated with his 27/07/2007 Church) 7745 long running mission. Apparently unique at the time through being lead entirely by ladies. Both architecturally curious and historically important these mission halls Blackgang Mission Check were rapidly erected to bring religious enlightenment to those rural and agricultural Hall communities too far away from the high church. No longer in active use. K6 Telephone Box Bonchurch Bonchurch SZ 57265 K6 type, red glazed public phone booth Village Road 78023 Morton Manor Brading 602863 Grounds laid out possibly in the late 18th century around this medieval manor. Now a 2001 Park visitor attraction. Described in 1822 sales particulars as ‘This charming retreat is encircled by the Lawn, Shrubbery, Pleasure and Kitchen Gardens, laid out with approved taste and abundantly stocked with choice fruit trees.’ Yarcroft Yarbridge Brading SZ 60454 Nicely balanced well detailed property. 22/04/2007 86390 1-5 High Street Brading SZ 60596 Simple but visually important stone terrace of town cottages of 19th century date with 22/04/2007 87090 stepped slate roofs and yellow brick detailing. Rosebank The Mall Brading SZ 60579 Very interesting attractive stone property with clapboard frontage. Important historic 22/04/2007 87002 detailing includes the spacing and proportions of the three early windows and door. Possibly 17th century. Earthen bank with stone revetment to form a sea wall crossing Brading Haven Brading Old Sea Brading Haven Brading SZ 6161 th 22/04/2007 Wall 8708 dating to the 17 C and associated with the use of the town quay and the importance of coastal trade to the town in the medieval and post med periods. Pear Tree and West Street Brading SZ 60534 Characterful 18th century chalk block dwelling, now two properties. Formerly Grade 26/10/2007 Jasmine Cottages 87152 III. Original window openings retained although modern windows installed. Albion House 72 & High Street Brading SZ 60608 Originally a single dwelling dating from the 18th century, with interesting brick 26/10/2007 73 87066 detailing and some historic windows. Now separated into two properties, one with modern shop front but remains very important to the street scene. Wheatsheaf Inn High Street Brading SZ 60597 18th century nicely proportioned property with some surviving historic features 26/10/2007 87042 including windows, formerly Grade III listed. 74 High Street Brading SZ 60604 Possibly 17th century form with central chimney stack and entrance to side. Now 26/10/2007 87058 stuccoed and important to street scene. Some surviving historic features including window openings. Formerly Grade III listed Morton Cottage Old Morton Brading SZ 60296 Interestingly this property is of chalk block construction with yellow brick detailing. It 26/10/2007 Road 86077 exhibits quality detailing including historic 6 pane timber sashes and margin glazed bays. Brook House Park Brighstone 392848 Particularly historic seat which is reputed to have been visited by Henry VII in 1499. 2001 In 1850 Brook House became the home of the Seely family (Winter 1984). An area of parkland to E. and W. of gardens and the remains of avenue shown said to have been planted by Queen Mary in 1920’s whilst a visitor to Brook House. Oak tree planted by Garibaldi in 1864 but died in 1995. Walled kitchen garden to N is still in use as kitchen gardens. Mottistone Manor Garden in its present form was laid out by Lady Nicholson from Mottistone Manor Brighstone 405837 th 2001 Garden the 1970's. The garden forms the setting to the 16 century manor house and is approached through the restored C17 barn. The garden is open to the public and includes John Seeleys 1930’s Shack. The garden was redesigned by the National Trust Head Gardener in 2005? The Lodge Main Road Brighstone SZ 42238 Substantial stone residence of 1890 set in 4 acres of grounds and recently 22/04/2007 82952 sensitively restored. Interior features include ornate ceilings and stone fireplaces. War memorial Main Rd Brighstone SZ 4289 A granite cross of remembrance dedicated to villagers who died in WW1 and WW2. 02/06/2008 8272 Brighstone Holiday Military Road Brighstone SZ 4161 Group of well preserved chalet huts, some now on eroding ground. First purpose 26/10/2007 Chalets (GROUP) Bay 8203 built holiday camp in the country. Started in 1930 War memorial The Green Calbourne Designed by Sir Arthur Day and built by local builders, this Hopton Wood Stone 02/06/2008 SZ 4248 cross on Portland base lists the 16 men from the village who died in WW1 and 8659 WW2. The Old School 61 Clatterford Carisbrooke SZ 48226 An interesting purpose built school building dating from 1892 with distinctive 02/06/2008 Rd 87906 windows and architectural detailing. It has survived well. Former Methodist Newman Lane Chale SZ 4824 A landmark, detailed stone building in an elevated position above the road and very 27/07/2007 Church 7909 much in the Anglican style, appearing more like a small parish church than a chapel building. Check K6 Telephone Box Chale SZ 48522 K6 type, red glazed public phone booth Chale Green 79813 K6 Telephone Box Military Road, Chale. SZ 4830 K6 type, red glazed public phone booth 7754 K6 Telephone Box Off Hollow Chillerton SZ 48735 K6 type, red glazed public phone booth Lane 83784 Northwood Park Ward Ave Cowes 493963 A landscape park surrounding Northwood House developed from 1800 with 2001 pleasure grounds and situated in an elevated position above Cowes with views of the Solent. In 1844 the pleasure grounds contained ornamental trees and shrubberies linked by winding paths. Now a public park, some of these evergreen shrubberies and individual specimen trees including a cedar of Lebanon and cork oak survive. Princes Green Cowes 491966 A public open space adjacent to the shore, presented to Cowes by George 2001 (“Rocket”) Stephenson in 1863 which incorporated a weeping ash, bandstand, fountain, statue and shelters. Fomer J S Whites Medina Road Cowes SZ 49949 Visually impressive three storey red brick works with carriage archway through to 27/07/2007 Offices 95645 rear and extended moulded architrave and cornice to main door. Building associated with J S Whites, a prominent and popular local employer and renowned shipbuilder. Greens Cottages Three Gates Cowes SZ 48807 Noted for their quality and distinctive detailing, these cottages survive well with 02/06/2008 Road 94616 minimal alterations and retain attractive, unique windows. Possibly almshouses, the naming of these cottages reflects their importance in the local landscape. Watch Cott, The Parade Cowes SZ 49555 This terrace of three has survived well despite alterations which although detracting 02/06/2008 Claymore and 96399 from their townscape merit are probably reversible. The architectural features particular to the locality – its seaside location and to the age of the building are still Quayside recognisable. Barton Manor East Cowes 520944 Barton Manor is a well preserved example of a simple Victorian garden layout with 2001 Gardens Edwardian and later additions.
