    Student Services Housing and Residence Life inspects nor approves any off-campus housing. A listing of off-campus Auburn University offers a variety of on-campus housing accommo- housing facilities can be obtained at various on-campus locations dations for students. The university provided a folder with important information on scholarships, transferring, and career opportunities. Participants especially enjoyed the student ambassador tour guide whose enthusiasm and knowledge helped make their decision to transfer to Troy easier. Added to the tour was Breanna McCray, former TRiO SSS student, who met us on campus to discuss her experiences at Troy University. The students then had lunch with Breanna McCray and Brittany Paige, mentors and former SSS participants, as they discussed the transfer process. A special guest was Jonathan Williams, former SSS participant and graduate student at Troy University. The students thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the Troy University campus tour. Go Trojans! U D U l"'l \I OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY Sunny Slope Update Written by Bill Brown, OLLI Member Sunny Slope, an historic plantation home on South College that once faced the prospect of demolition, has a new purpose, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Auburn University has a new home. That happy circumstance can be credited largely to Ann B. Pearson, who bought and restored the home and made it available to the university. Parts of the house dates back to 1857. In one sense, Sunny Slope has come full circle. While owner William Flewellyn Samford pursued his political interests, his wife, Susan Dowdell Samford, conducted a school for girls at the home. Now it is home. to an organization providing learning opportunities for older adults. Built in 1857, Sunny Slope was located on a 2,500-acre plantation. It is a single story Greek Revival raised cottage originally consisting of only four rooms, modest in comparison to the grand antebellum mansions across the South. It sits well back from the road at 1031 South College Street, just south of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. It was the childhood home of Gov. James Samford, for whom Samford Hall at Auburn University is named. The elder Samford was a newspaper editor, Methodist minister, teacher and politician. He was an ardent supporter of secession, and the 14th and 18th Regiments of Alabama Volunteers were formed at the home. The plantation was used as a camping ground for Confederate troops in 1861.

It received “best in class” recognition as a community which made a commitment, both in hard amenity offerings and soft programs, to provide a high- quality lifestyle for retirees. AARC is a not-for-profit professional association established in 1994 to support the efforts of states and municipalities, as well as community developers and for-profit businesses, who market to retirees. Master-Planned Developments in this program include Tennessee with two, North Carolina with two, Virginia with one, Arkansas with one, and Georgia with one. Now, Alabama has two (National Village and The Colony at The Grand in Fairhope). About National Village National Village in Auburn-Opelika, Alabama is one of two resort/retirement communities in Alabama under development by The Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). The second community is The Colony at The Grand in Fairhope, Alabama. RSA is the pension fund for public teachers and employees in Alabama. RSA has 358,000 members and $43 billion under management. RSA has many other investments in Alabama, including the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (26 golf courses at 11 sites, eight resort hotels, and six spas). RSA has developed 15 buildings and 14 parking decks in Alabama. RSA owns the largest office building in New York City (55 Water street) and is invested in television stations and newspapers.
