We welcomed Dr Yang Xu from the Technische Universitat Ilmenau as a Lecturer in Electrochemical Energy Storage, Dr Cally Haynes from University of Cambridge as a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry and Dr Anna Regoutz from Imperial College as a Lecturer in Materials Chemistry. In addition, Dr Adam Clancy and Dr Gi-Byoung Hwang will both be starting Ramsay Trust Fellowships in the department. We also welcomed Hannah Shalloe as our first Apprentice Technician, Helena Wong who has started as a Chemistry Teaching Laboratory Technician, Thom Dixon as our new Teaching and Learning (Student Lifecycle) administrator, Angelo Delbusso as our Workshop Technician and Malgorzata Puchnarewicz who has joined us as maternity cover for the mass spec facility. -

KATHLEEN LONSDALE – FAMOUS IRISH SCIENTIST By William Reville, University College, Cork. Science traditionally was largely a male preserve, but today things are different. Girls are coming into science, particularly the biological sciences, in large numbers. Two-thirds of the biological sciences intake at UCC is female. Today I write about an Irish woman, Kathleen Lonsdale, who made her mark in science when women were the exception rather than the rule. Kathleen Yardley was born in Newbridge, Co. Kildare on 28 January, 1903, the youngest of 10 children, 4 girls and 6 boys. Four of the boys died in infancy. Kathleen’s father Harry, an ex-British Army sergeant major, was postmaster at Newbridge, near the Curragh Camp, and dealt with mail for the Black and Tans. Harry kept his wife short of money, and, overall, the family was poorly off. Harry was intelligent, read widely, and Kathleen inherited her passion for facts from him. Kathleen’s mother, Jessie Cameron, was of Scottish descent and of strong character. Jessie was a Baptist and raised her children in that tradition. She persuaded them to ‘take the pledge’ at an early age. Kathleen’s earliest memories were of religious services in Newbridge. She was happy in the local school where she learned to count using yellow balls. However, Jessie, worried at the unsettled state in Ireland, took the children to Seven Kings, Essex in 1908. Kathleen won a scholarship to attend the County High School for Girls at Ilford from 1914 to 1919. She also took classes in physics, chemistry and higher mathematics at the County High School for Boys, the only girl to do so, since these subjects were not taught in her school. -

Kathleen Lonsdale A biographical memoir by Dorothy M. C. Hodgkin, O.M., F.RS. Born in the year the Wright brothers first flew an aeroplane, Kathleen Lonsdale lived long enough to see moon-landings appear almost commonplace. The problems attendant on such spectacular advances in science and technology were among her most constant preoccupations, because she felt that scientists do have a special responsibility to try to ensure that science as a whole is rightly used. After graduating from Bedford College in 1922 at the age of 19 with high marks in physics, she joined W. H. Bragg's research team at University College London to work in the new and exciting field of X-ray crystallography. She went with Bragg's group when they moved to the Royal Institution, and remained active in this field until her death almost 50 years later. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the study of crystals, Kathleen Lonsdale became one of the first two women ever to be elected into the Fellowship of the Royal Society. In 1927 she married a fellow scientist, Thomas Lonsdale, whom she had met at University College. Coming from different religious denominations, and exercised by the proper moral framework within which to educate their three young children, Thomas and Kathleen eventually became Quakers by convincement in 1935. Kathleen was imprisoned for reasons of conscience in 1943, an experience which not only broadened her own outlook, but also gave her a lifelong interest in penal reform. She was active in many areas of concern to the Society of Friends, and wrote and edited lectures and pamphlets on Quaker themes. -
