ASSR MUSIC PRODUCTION CURRICULUM Audio Tools for Schools ALAN Parsons’ Student project www.artandscienceofsound.com A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS usic is a precious resource. Being able Mto capture or record music for future generations to enjoy is one of music’s most valuable skills. Today Music Production is something anyone can do, armed with a cellphone and a decent internet connection. Sure you’ll soon want a microphone; and then another mic, and then another mic. Speakers help of course, and pro software gives you the sort of power that only major recording studios like Capitol and Abbey Road had back in the day. Speaking of which, back in the day when we were trying to carve out our careers, there weren’t any alternatives to a recording studio. And there weren’t any schools you could go to to learn about recording. Alan got a job as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road and Julian signed with Charisma Records as a writer and keyboard player. We listened, observed, tried, occasionally failed, Since 2010 we’ve dedicated ourselves to lifting the lid on what but eventually started to make sense of this magical thing we call it takes to record music; unravelling some of the mysteries ‘making records.’ behind and in front of the glass. I believe that both Richard Wagner’s ideas and the formal design of his dramas can be traced in Manolis Kalomiris’s visions and work. Kalomiris is a Greek composer who is considered to be a rather influential figure in the music-cultural development of Greece during the beginning of the twentieth century. -

Josephine Diamond The dissertation is a study of postmodern Serbian and Greek novels that reflect the most recent historical trauma in the Balkans. The texts I analyze in specific chapters are Eugenia Fakinou’s The Seventh Garment (1983), Milorad Pavić’s The Dictionary of the Khazars (1984), Rhea Galanaki’s The Life of Ismail Ferik-Pasha (1989), and David Albahari’s Bait (1996). The appropriation of the term ‘mythistory’ as a key concept in defining the postmodern narratives analyzed in my dissertation derives from the absence of a clear distinction between mythological and historical national origins. In the Serbian texts analyzed interrogations of history feature as the dominant narrative mode, while even in historically informed Greek texts mythical subtext often figures as the cardinal referent. A possible reason for such a broad appropriation of myth lies in the claim of late 18th-century Greek nationalists to the classical glory of Ancient Greece. This liaison enabled the closure of the gap between the classical period of, predominantly mythically informed, Greek antiquity and post-Ottoman Greek modernity. -

BODIES IN THE MARGINS Refiguring the Rebetika as Literature Sophia Schlesinger Faculty Advisor: Andrea Kaston-Tange Macalester English Department Submitted April 25th, 2020 Abstract This thesis engages a literary analysis of a corpus of songs and recordings known as the rebetika (sing. rebetiko), which prospered in the port districts of major cities throughout the Aegean in the early 20th century. Engaging the rebetika as literary texts, I argue, helps us understand how they have functioned as a kind of pressure point on the borders between nation and Other. Without making unproveable biographical claims about the motives of the music progenitors, I examine why so many have reached for the rebetika as texts with which to articulate various political and cultural desires.
