MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art N A K I A X 56 pages; 80 illustrations $4.95 N AKI AN by Frank O'Hara This extensively illustrated monograph is the first to appear on one of America's foremost modern sculptors, Reuben Nakian. As Frank O'Hara makes clear in his illuminating study, Nakian's career "has had dramatic ups and downs, advances, re versals, revaluations." Following in the tradition of Paul Manship and Gaston Lachaise, Nakian by his mid-thirties was already acclaimed for his styl ized animal sculpture and realistic portraits. Then abruptly he drastically revised his artistic concepts, and after virtually abandoning sculpture for about a decade reemerged in the late 1940s with draw ings, terra-cottas, and bronzes that were sensuous, abstract interpretations of mythological themes. This new style, while highly personal, was closely related to that of the abstract expressionists. It led directly to the remarkable plastic innovations of the later works in plaster, bronze, and steel — heroic both in subject and scale —through which Nakian has made his major contribution to con temporary art. The detailed chronology and bibliography which supplement the text clarify the events in Nakian's career and indicate as well the growth of interest in his work. Frank O'Hara, Associate Curator of the Depart ment of Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, is a well-known poet and playwright who has been closely associated with the abstract expressionist movement in this country. He is the author of a monograph on Jack son Pollock, New Spanish Painting and Sculpture (i960), Robert Motherwell, published in 1965 on the occasion of the Museum's exhibition, and numerous critical articles.     Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial American Battle Monuments Commission 1 2 LOCATION The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial lies at the north edge of the town of Nettuno, Italy, which is immediately east of Anzio, 38 miles south of Rome. There is regular train service between Rome and Nettuno. Travel one way by rail takes a little over one hour. The cemetery is located one mile north of the Nettuno railroad station, from which taxi service is available. To travel to the cemetery from Rome by automobile, the following two routes are recommended: (1) At Piazza di San Giovanni, bear left and pass through the old Roman wall to the Via Appia Nuova/route No. 7. About 8 miles from the Piazza di San Giovanni, after passing Ciampino airport, turn right onto Via Nettunense, route No. 207. Follow the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery sign and proceed past Aprilia to Anzio, Nettuno and the cemetery. (2) At Piazza de San Giovanni, bear right onto the Via dell’ Amba Aradam to Via delle Terme de Caracalla and pass through the old Roman wall. Proceed along Via Cristoforo Colombo to the Via Pontina (Highway 148). Drive south approximately 39 miles along Highway 148 and exit at Campoverde/Nettuno. Proceed to Nettuno. The cemetery is located 5 ½ miles down this road. Adequate hotel accommodations may be found in Anzio, Nettuno and Rome. HOURS The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm except December 25 and January 1. It is open on host country holidays.

Today, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation is our community’s way of continuing this tradition. It’s our communal response to both the everyday and the extraordinary needs of Jews in Milwaukee, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world. ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 REPORT ANNUAL In 2014-15, we made great strides in developing the financial resources that will sustain our work. We’re pleased to report that our donors invested $5.9 million in our 2015 Annual Campaign, a 3% increase over the previous year, after a multi-year downward trend in campaign achievement. Our donors see the value in our work, and it shows in their giving. We also made a giant step forward in building our Jewish Community Foundation, which now has $165 million in total assets. Through our Create a Jewish Legacy program, we secured 365 commitments for after lifetime “legacy” gifts with an estimated value of $8.7 million. We are following the ancient tradition among Jews of responding to need by saying, "Hineni: I am here. I am ready to do what is asked of me." La Brea Avenue ∙ Los Angeles, CA 90036 ∙ Tel (323) 938-5222 ∙ [email protected] Reuben Nakian was born in 1897 in College Point, New York, the fifth child of Armenian immigrants. From 1916 to 1919, he apprenticed to the noted sculptor Paul Manship in New York, along with Gaston Lachaise. Nakian and Lachaise established their own studio from 1920 to 1922. In 1922, with a stipend from Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Nakian established his own studio. Nakian’s early works of the 1920s and 30s were mainly of exotic animals sculpted in a sensually smooth manner typical of the era. In the 1920s and 30s, Nakian received considerable recognition with numerous exhibitions in New York, including the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Downtown Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Corcoran in Washington D.C. In 1926 he met Brancusi and assisted him in installing his first one-man exhibition in the U.S. In the mid 1930s, Nakian met the painter Arshile Gorky (and through him Willem De Kooning), who encouraged him to seek greater expression through abstraction. Nakian - already inspired by Picasso, and some of the European avant gardes, as was Gorky - sought to further his own expressive possibilities and pursued a course of modeling the figure with unprecedented freedom, atypical in American sculpture. Indeed, Nakian’s unique style in sculpture anticipated artists such as Willem De Kooning’s work by more than two decades. Nakian’s immersion in Greek mythology captured his interest and served as the primary inspiration of his subject matter for the duration of his career, through the mid 1980s.

    In 1999, an innovative chair and expertise center was created at the Faculty wouter j. hanegraaff and joyce pijnenburg (eds.) of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam, focused on the history of Western esotericism from the Renaissance to the present. The label “Western esotericism” refers here to a complex of historical currents such as, notably, the Hermetic philosophy of the Renaissance, mystical, magical, alchemical and astrological currents, Christian kabbalah, Paracelsianism, Rosicrucianism, Christian theosophy, and the many occultist and related esoteric currents that developed in their wake during the 19th and the 20th centuries. This complex of “alternative” religious currents is studied from a critical historical and interdisciplinary perspective, with the intention of studying the roles that they have played in the history of Western culture. In the past ten years, the chair for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents has succeeded in establishing itself as the most important center for study and teaching in this domain, and has strongly contributed to the establishment of Western esotericism as a recognized academic field of research. This volume is published at the occasion of the 10th anniversary. Hermes in the Academy in the Hermes It contains a history of the creation and development of the chair, followed by articles on aspects of Western esotericism by the previous and current staff members, contributions by students and Ph.D. students about the study program, and reflections by international top specialists about the field of research and its academic development.
