THE TRAIL BLAZ E.R The Indianapolis Hiking Club (Happiness - A Step at a Time) VOLUME EIGHTEEN NO. ONE 1986 EDITION The 30th year of the Indianapolis Hiking Club ended Octgber l, 1986. The constitution defines the purpose of the Club; "To encourage a love of nature, through the promotion of outdoor recreation in the form of hikes and outings, and to sponsor other activities inci dental to the foregoing". An interesting and innovative schedule of activities during the year contributed greatly to the growth of the club. A large per~entage of the active members gave enthusiastic support to the club, and thus helped to maintain the status of the Club as a strong and viable leader in outdoor recreation in Indiana. Guests hiked with us often throughout the year, and many of them joined the Club, thereby increasing our total paid membership as of October 1, 1986 to a t otal of 407 people. During the year the Club scheduled 197 hikes and 4 overnight outings. Also there were 4 General Assembly meetings, a sununer picnic, and the annual Christmas party. The General Assembly meetings are the quarterly business and social general assemblies for all the members . The September meeting is also when the annual election of officers is held. At .r--. each General Assembly meeting there are programs featuring speakers with topics of interest -Co the members. These quarterly meetings are your opportunity to learn more about the Club and how it works, and to give your suggestions to the officers. The officers of the Club devote much time to the running of the organization. The active support of members is appreciated and makes all the work really worthwhile. This means we had over 30% of the membership who were active hikers with the Club. There are many members who for one reason or another can not hike and participate as they would like to. All of the members are valuable to the Club. Please come out to activities as often as you can. The General Assembly meetings and the summer picnic and the Christmas party are good opportunities for all members to meet old friends and socialize even though some are not able to hike as strenuously as they once did. HIKE LEADER RECOGNITION These people not only lead hikes, but they spend much time scouting for new hikes and going over old ones looking for variations and new ideas. The Club expresses its thanks to all leaders as they are the backbone of the Club, Special recognition goes to those leaders who led on 5 or more hikes during the year. Under the direction of Ron Craig, about a dozen members spent several hours constructing water barriers and steps , along with other incidental maintenance on the trail, in the area between Elk Creek and Spurgeon Hollow. Two representatives from the Department of Natural Resources were present to coordinate the Club's efforts. The Knobstone Trail in southern Indiana is of particular interest to the Indianapolis Hiking Club as we have worked on the trail in previous years and we applaud Indiana's efforts for the benefit of all hikers. Watch for future trail maintenance work when it is published in the schedule. You will find your efforts worthwhile and rewarding . ANNUAL _CHRISTMAS PARTY The second Saturday in December found members of the Club at the Covenant Presbyterian Church enjoying the companionship of good friends at the annual Christmas party . It seems that hikers like to eat almost as much as they like to hike. What a treat was the pitch-in dinner - many ate too much but that is what parties are for . A group from Lawrence North High School entertained with songs for the season, and we joined in on some of the carols . Santa showed up again (HO HO HO) and passed out apples to all the good boys and girls . Thanks to the Floras and the Waltzes for the donation of the apples . A SUMMER PICNIC Shelter #2 at Forest Park at Noblesville was reserved for the Hiking Club· picnic. The Begemans led a group of hikers at 9:00 AM along back roads to the Morse Reservoir on a 10 mile hike . When the hikers returned they were joined by the rest of the people coming for the picnic. This day in late July was cloudy and had rained, but it didn't dampen the spirits. A great time to visit and enjoy the day with old friends and to make some new ones. Quite a few visited the Railroad Museum on the park grounds and enjoyed the ride back and forth on the old time interurban. THE SCHEDULED HIKES A REVIEW BY MONTHS In addition to the Saturday and Sunday hikes, the Club sponsored many week day hikes, some were self-guided and some were led by a leader. During October Mary Kidwell and Libby Moore alternated in leading hikes at Eagle Creek on Tuesdays. Frank & Wilma Thompson conducted self- guided hikes during October on Wednesdays at South Grove/Riverside. On Tuesdays in November, Bill Flora led hikes at Morgan-Monroe. He also led Morgan-Monroe hikes every Tuesday during March with assistant leader Gene Waltz.
