(Happiness - A Step at a Time)

VOLUME EIGHTEEN NO. ONE

1986 EDITION

The 30th year of the Indianapolis Hiking Club ended Octgber l, 1986. The constitution defines the purpose of the Club; "To encourage a love of nature, through the promotion of outdoor recreation in the form of hikes and outings, and to sponsor other activities inci dental to the foregoing". An interesting and innovative schedule of activities during the year contributed greatly to the growth of the club. A large per~entage of the active members gave enthusiastic support to the club, and thus helped to maintain the status of the Club as a strong and viable leader in outdoor recreation in . Guests hiked with us often throughout the year, and many of them joined the Club, thereby increasing our total paid membership as of October 1, 1986 to a t otal of 407 people.

During the year the Club scheduled 197 hikes and 4 overnight outings. Also there were 4 General Assembly meetings, a sununer picnic, and the annual Christmas party. The General Assembly meetings are the quarterly business and social general assemblies for all the members . The September meeting is also when the annual election of officers is held. At .r--. each General Assembly meeting there are programs featuring speakers with topics of interest -Co the members. These quarterly meetings are your opportunity to learn more about the Club and how it works, and to give your suggestions to the officers.

The officers of the Club devote much time to the running of the organization. The active support of members is appreciated and makes all the work really worthwhile. The following dedicated oft;icers served during the fiscal year ending October 1, 1986.

The Pathfinder and the other officers always are trying to plan a schedule of hikes and events that will be of interest to the members. They are receptive to the requests and suggestions you give. THIS IS YOUR CLUB!! Your advice and constructive criticism for the good of the Club is always welcomed by the officers. The Club needs VARIETY and this means new and interesting areas toexplore and hike. This past year several social events were incorporated into schP-dule, including a canoe trip, a musical show, a baseball game, roller skating, etc. Response was good and your suggestions for items of this nature will be helpful in planning future events. REMEMBER: WE NEED YOUR HELP IN MAKING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE CLUB RESPONSIVE TO THE NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE MEMBERS. Page 2 THE TRAIL BIAZER 1986 EDITION THE INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB Hiking is the principal activity of the Club, and each year members who have hiked more than 200 miles or have been on at least 20 hikes during the year are recognized on the honor roll. There were over 60 other members who hiked at least 10 times during the year for a total of from 50 miles to 200 miles . This means we had over 30% of the membership who were active hikers with the Club. There are many members who for one reason or another can not hike and participate as they would like to. All of the members are valuable to the Club. Please come out to activities as often as you can. The General Assembly meetings and the summer picnic and the Christmas party are good opportunities for all members to meet old friends and socialize even though some are not able to hike as strenuously as they once did.

HIKE LEADER RECOGNITION These people not only lead hikes, but they spend much time scouting for new hikes and going over old ones looking for variations and new ideas. The Club expresses its thanks to all leaders as they are the backbone of the Club, Special recognition goes to those leaders who led on 5 or more hikes during the year.

NOTE: Co-Leaders included in the above totals were: Bob & Marge Begeman - 20 hikes, Frank & Wilma Thompson - 14 hikes, Bill Flora & Gene Waltz - 5 hikes, Juanita Lauth and Alberta Neill - 5 hikes.

The Club welcomes new leaders, and if you are interested in leading a hike, or perhaps have an idea where a new hike can be led, please contact the Pathfinder who will give you instructions on how to plan a hike and what arrangements you need to make. - THE TRAIL BLAZER 1986 EDITION THE INDIANA.POLIS HIKING CLUB Page 3 MAINTENANCE ON THE KNOB'STONE TRAIL A sunny hot day on the 2nd of August found the Club working on trail maintenance on the Knobstone Trail. Under the direction of Ron Craig, about a dozen members spent several hours constructing water barriers and steps , along with other incidental maintenance on the trail, in the area between Elk Creek and Spurgeon Hollow. Two representatives from the Department of Natural Resources were present to coordinate the Club's efforts. The Knobstone Trail in southern Indiana is of particular interest to the Indianapolis Hiking Club as we have worked on the trail in previous years and we applaud Indiana's efforts for the benefit of all hikers. Watch for future trail maintenance work when it is published in the schedule. You will find your efforts worthwhile and rewarding .

ANNUAL _CHRISTMAS PARTY The second Saturday in December found members of the Club at the Covenant Presbyterian Church enjoying the companionship of good friends at the annual Christmas party . It seems that hikers like to eat almost as much as they like to hike. What a treat was the pitch-in dinner - many ate too much but that is what parties are for . A group from Lawrence North High School entertained with songs for the season, and we joined in on some of the carols . Santa showed up again (HO HO HO) and passed out apples to all the good boys and girls . Thanks to the Floras and the Waltzes for the donation of the apples .

A SUMMER PICNIC Shelter #2 at Forest Park at Noblesville was reserved for the Hiking Club· picnic. The Begemans led a group of hikers at 9:00 AM along back roads to the Morse Reservoir on a 10 mile hike . When the hikers returned they were joined by the rest of the people coming for the picnic. This day in late July was cloudy and had rained, but it didn't dampen the spirits. A great time to visit and enjoy the day with old friends and to make some new ones. Quite a few visited the Railroad Museum on the park grounds and enjoyed the ride back and forth on the old time interurban.

OVERNIGHT OUTINGS Our overnight outings have been well attended and are great places to spend a weekend and relax with old and new friends in the Club. There are planned programs as well as hiking.

FALL OVERNIGHT AT BRADFORD WOODS October was a beautiful month for about SO members to enjoy Bradford Woods, Indiana University ' s 2,300 acre outdoor retreat near Martinsville . • The cabins a nd dining lodge at Baxter Village were great. Good hiking both days, and Tom Palmberg and Bob Begeman arranged a bonfire hike. Bob a l so took us on a moonlight hike.

WINTER AT CLIFTY FALLS About 80 members visited Clifty Falls in February. Tom Pa lmberg had arranged a good schedule of activities including a hike to historic Madison. Dottie Reindollar was a good choice from local Madison as our guest speaker. The hospitality hour Saturday evening helped everybody to unwind and relax.

MEMORIAL DAY AT GNAW BONE CAMP About 80 people plus 25 day hikers enjoyed this weekend. Saturday afternoon there was a short hike. And after dinner the Gnaw Bone Players presented "WAY OFF BROADWAY" in the outdoor theater . An interesting collection of skits such as; "Spooks in the Privy" "The Perfect Hiker" "The Unfortunate Man" " Street of Good Friends" and there were several singing groups. You would have to see it to believe it! Sunday we had a good hike in the morning, and that evening in the Gnaw Bone Palace we listened to Gerry Gray and Jerry Hammons and the "Famil y Reunion String Band" with their folk music and kitchen bands. Wonderful entertainment. The MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE Monday morning was followed by another hike. After the noon meal we said goodby and headed for home.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT SHAWNEE STATE PARK About 45 people enjoyed this Labor Day at the beautiful park near Portsmouth, Ohio . The hospitality hour Saturday evening was a great way to relax after the afternoon hike . Sunday, Jim Stern led us on a hike in historic Portsmouth. Most of the group then followed Jim across the bridge to Kentucky and hiked a portion of the Jenny Wiley trail. Jim grew up in this area and was thus able to plan such an interesting Sunday for us. Jim's brother Bob is a forest ranger in the area and he was our guest speaker Sunday evening. Bob told us stories about the forest and brought some live snakes for us to see. Jim didn't seem to enjoy the snakes as much as others did!! After a morning hike Monday we headed for home. Many stopped at the Moyer's Winery restaurant about an hour from the park to eat lunch on the outside veranda overlooking the river.
