    ^ LACMA ANNOUNCES 2013 ART + FILM GALA HONORING DAVID HOCKNEY and MARTIN SCORSESE THE 3RD annual event, TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2013 will be co-chaired by Leonardo D¡Caprio and Eva Chow ALSO CELEBRATING COLLABORATION WITH THE FILM FOUNDATION TO PRESERVE FILMS BY AGNèS VARDA presented by Gucci (Los Angeles, June 17, 2013)— The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is pleased to announce the date and honorees of the 2013 Art+Film Gala. On Saturday, November 2, notables from the art, film, fashion, and entertainment industries will unite at LACMA to honor artist David Hockney and filmmaker Martin Scorsese. For its third year, the 2013 Art+Film Gala is co-chaired by LACMA Trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who continue to champion LACMA’s film initiatives. Also being celebrated is the first collaboration between The Film Foundation, founded by Martin Scorsese, and LACMA and The Annenberg Foundation, to preserve four films by the acclaimed French filmmaker Agnès Varda. Gucci once again shows its invaluable support of the museum as the presenting sponsor of the 2013 Art+Film Gala, with Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini as Gala Host Committee Chair. “LACMA continues to integrate film into the museum through film-based exhibitions such as the Stanley Kubrick retrospective, Hans Richter: Encounters and an upcoming exhibition on the Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “The 2013 Art+Film Gala celebrates our growing achievements in combining art and film at LACMA and is in alignment with our plans to initiate a program to acquire and restore films, in the same way as we do with other works in our collection.” Gala Co-Chair Eva Chow added, “The Art+Film Gala, now in its third year, brings renowned figures from the worlds of art, cinema, fashion, and music together to support the museum.

    The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone. Date of review: Thursday the 12th of October, 2006. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world.

    BROADWAY MELODY: The beginning of Hollywood musicals This film review features a discussion on the relationship of film criticisms written at the time of the film’s release and others, which were written years later. 10 pages long. BROADWAY MELODY: The beginning of Hollywood musicals Broadway Melody's release on February 1, 1929 captures the attention of such issues as sound replacing silence and technology rather then the usual racial and political overtones like a lot of other genres. Most musicals had very simplistic plots: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy sings song, and boy gets girl. Although there was racial discrimination like the depiction of black speciality acts, such as the Nicholas Brothers and the Berry Brothers, as janitors etc., the story lines were none violent, free of political issues and always ended on a happy note pretty much until West Side Story. By 1960 the musical was but a thing of the past with only a few films a year. All this being said, it is important to understand the context of the genre in order to formulate criticism other then saying that the shots are simple and that the acting, in general, was lousy. As one analyses a musical such as Broadway Melody of 1929 one finds that the art of the movie musical is found in the star's ability to sing, act and dance effectively. By far the most frequent comment about Broadway Melody is that of it's relationship with Broadway and it's backstage on stage look at vaudeville performance, an activity that most of all the audiences of the 10's and 20's could relate to.

    Introduction Everything began with the movie Moulin Rouge (2001). Since I was so obsessed with this hit film, I couldn’t but want to know more about this particular genre - musical films. Then I started to trace the history of this genre back to Hollywood’s classical musical films. It’s interesting that musical films have undergone several revivals and are usually regarded as the products of escapism. Watching those protagonists singing and dancing happily, the audience can daydream freely and forget about the cruel reality. What are the aesthetic artifices of this genre so enchanting that it always catches the eye of audience generation after generation? What kinds of ideal life do these musical films try to depict? Do they (musical films) merely escape from reality or, as a matter of fact, implicitly criticize the society? In regard to the musical films produced by Hollywood, what do they reflect the contemporary social, political or economic situations? To investigate these aspects, I start my research project on the Hollywood musical film genre from the 1950s (its Classical Period) to 2002. However, some people might wonder that among all those Hollywood movies, what is so special about the musical films that makes them distinguish from the other types of movies? On the one hand, the musical film genre indeed has several important contributions to the Hollywood industry, and its influence never wanes even until today. In need of specialty for musical film production, many talented professional dancers and singers thus get the chances to join in Hollywood and prove themselves as great actors (actresses), too.

Grammatical Metaphor is an incongruent expression in realization of meaning on lexical and grammatical level, of which the main form is nominalization. It is divided into ideational metaphor and interpersonal metaphor. By analysis of the titles of thirty American Oscar-winning films, it can be found that nominalization is a common phenomenon. Based on this, the English film titles discussed may enlighten the Chinese film titles translation in cross-cultural communication and nominalization should be a tendency of expression form when translating Chinese film titles into English, in order to convey information of them more concisely and efficiently. Introduction During the increasingly frequent cross-cultural communication, more and more Chinese films have access to enter foreign film markets. According to the statistics, the production of Chinese feature films up to 686 while the imported films are only 63 in 2015. Moreover, the sale of Chinese films abroad is 2.77 billion Yuan, up 48.13% over last year. Thus it can be seen that export of films will become a trend in the future. Considering this, film translation plays a fairly important role. And title translation comes first when films are faced with overseas propaganda. It is generally known that a title is the soul of a film.

Film directors are masters at controlling what we look at when we watch a lm. However, there have been few quantitative studies of how gaze responds to cinematographic conventions thought to inuence attention. We have collected and are releasing a data set designed to help investigate eye movements in response to higher level features such as faces, dialogue, camera movements, image composition, and edits. The data set, which will be released to the community, includes gaze information for 21 viewers watching 15 clips from live action 2D lms, which have been hand annotated for high level features. This work has implications for the media studies, display technology, immersive reality, and human cognition.
