The Art of Adaptation
Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs Bókmenntir, Menning og Miðlun The Art of Adaptation The move from page to stage/screen, as seen through three films Margrét Ann Thors 301287-3139 Leiðbeinandi: Guðrún Björk Guðsteinsdóttir Janúar 2020 2 Big TAKK to ÓBS, “Óskar Helps,” for being IMDB and the (very) best 3 Abstract This paper looks at the art of adaptation, specifically the move from page to screen/stage, through the lens of three films from the early aughts: Spike Jonze’s Adaptation, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, and Joel and Ethan Coen’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? The analysis identifies three main adaptation-related themes woven throughout each of these films, namely, duality/the double, artistic madness/genius, and meta- commentary on the art of adaptation. Ultimately, the paper seeks to argue that contrary to common opinion, adaptations need not be viewed as derivatives of or secondary to their source text; rather, just as in nature species shift, change, and evolve over time to better suit their environment, so too do (and should) narratives change to suit new media, cultural mores, and modes of storytelling. The analysis begins with a theoretical framing that draws on T.S. Eliot’s, Linda Hutcheon’s, Kamilla Elliott’s, and Julie Sanders’s thoughts about the art of adaptation. The framing then extends to notions of duality/the double and artistic madness/genius, both of which feature prominently in the films discussed herein. Finally, the framing concludes with a discussion of postmodernism, and the basis on which these films can be situated within the postmodern artistic landscape. -

Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully. However, there are three individuals especially vital for me finally concluding my studies: My dear mother; my highly supportive girlfriend, Jenniefer; and my beloved daughter, Evie. i Vang ii Contents 1 Introduction -
Chapter I Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter is divided into some subject matters. In this chapter, the researcher explains the background of the study, research questions, research objective, research significance, and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background of Study Basically, movie is simply described as a media that united from every photos and video. According to Erneste (1991:18), “the movie is a combination of a wide variety of arts, namely music, art, drama, literature coupled with photographic elements.” Photographic elements can be like the art or the ways on how the movie make interested, like sound effect or image effect. Nowadays, people share about their experiences or the incident that ever happened which is recorded into the images or videos and made them into a movie and uploaded into any kinds social media such as Youtube, Dailymotion, Instagram in short length duration of movies, and many more. There are differences between movies and film. Movie or motion picture is a sequence of consecutive photographic images projected onto a screen in such rapid succession as to give the illusion of movement (Longman, 1969:120). It means that moving picture concentrates in how the picture is moved and the content of the story can be displayed by pictures. Although, film or moving picture is a thin sheet or strip of flexible material, such as a cellulose derivative or a thermoplastic resin, coated with 1 a photosensitive emulsion and used to make photographic negatives or transparencies. It referred to the “tools” to display the pictures on it (Longman, 1969:56). Moving picture can be identified as the tools or device to take or shoot the picture. -

John Le Carré's the Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold
John le Carré’s The Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold War Jonathan Goodwin Abstract. The Secret Pilgrim was John le Carré’s first novel to consider the end of the cold war. The author describes how the novel’s embedded structure reveals le Carré’s political perspective more clearly than previous works and argues that this narrative frame is an adaptation to the sud- den collapse of le Carré’s traditional subject matter. In a speech given at University of Edinburgh, John le Carré remarked that only the spy novel could reveal the world’s hidden agendas (qtd. in Atwood 21). His own represen- tational agendas of betrayal and duplicity in the cold war (and after) are revealed in an unusual way in his The Secret Pilgrim (1990). The book, which contains a series of discrete episodes linked with a frame narrative, reveals the relationship between le Carré’s politi- cal thought and narrative technique more clearly than any of his other works because of the bareness of its structure. A source for le Carré’s title may be Rupert Brooke’s poem “Dust”: And every mote, on earth or air, Will speed and gleam, down later days, And like a secret pilgrim far By eager and invisible ways, Nor ever rest, nor ever lie, Till, beyond thinking, out of view, One mote of all the dust that’s I Shall meet one atom that was you. (49) The transmutation of the body into its elements in death, and the romantic possibility of preservation of some spirit beyond it, are the immediate references in Brooke’s poem; the particulate imagery of atoms and motes is also significant. -
Dragonheart: Fantasy Free
FREE DRAGONHEART: FANTASY PDF Todd McCaffrey | 768 pages | 01 Jan 2010 | Transworld Publishers Ltd | 9780552155762 | English | London, United Kingdom Dragonheart - Wikipedia From Coraline to ParaNorman check out some of our favorite family-friendly movie picks to watch this Halloween. See the full gallery. The young, sickly King Einon was wounded in a battle. In order for him to survive, he is healed by Draco, a dragon. Some years later, Bowen, a dragonslayer, encounters Draco. The two team up to form a travelling duo that perform an act, but the act is only known by themselves. Bowen supposedly "slays" Draco and then collects a reward from the town or village that he protects by killing the dragon who had been "terrorizing" them. From there, Bowen and Draco must save the entire kingdom from the rule of the now evil King Einon, who is part of Draco, and Draco a part of him. I've finally reached my fifties, but I still love this film as much as the first day I saw it in the cinema. It's a relevant thought, you see, because as I browsed Dragonheart: Fantasy reviews I came face to face with an old acquaintance -- the realisation that childlike wonder and imagination are actually rare enough to be in short supply, enough to justifiably call Dragonheart: Fantasy resources scarce. I raised an eyebrow, vexed, as people complained about realism; I've heard complaints of the improbability of a dragon's ambulatory system without ever the self awareness to realise that with a Dragonheart: Fantasy tweaks to physics to account for a different world -- one where magic exists as an institution and resource, no less -- along with some fixes to common misconceptions of dragons and animal biology that one could make anything probable. -
