The term ‘Kafkaesque’ is now in widespread use to indicate a situation or event characterised by frustration and torment, but this designation paints an unnecessarily bleak picture of Kafka’s fictional landscapes. One path towards a brighter view of his art is offered by Buddhism, which puts suffering at the centre of its philosophy and yet develops a positive spiritual outlook on life. It does so by giving clear reasons for suffering based on natural causes, leaving no room for mysterious or irresistible forces. From a Buddhist standpoint, the most formidable barrier to alleviating suffering is not presented by a powerful Court or an impregnable Castle, but by the human self or – more precisely – attachment to self. The Buddhist approach to Kafka reads his works in two complementary ways, for content (information) and form (expression). The first examines the close parallels between key Buddhist teachings (such as on suffering and emptiness) and predominant themes from Kafka’s writing (such as futile quests after recognition and justice); the second explores the gaps and paradoxes that confront Kafka’s characters and readers, and measures them against the absurd, nonsensical utterances (koans) used by Zen masters to nonplus their students and loosen their dependency on conventional modes of thinking. In this way, it will be shown that the suffering Kafka describes so relentlessly can be traced back to personal attachments rather than intervention by external agencies. 3 Acknowledgments In memory of my father, Eliodoro Cerase, and his example of selflessness. Theravada, which means “Way of the Elders,” is the earliest form of institutionalized Buddhism. It’s a style based primarily on talks the Buddha gave during his forty-six years of teaching. These talks were memorized and recited (before the internet, people could still do that) until they were finally written down a few hundred years later in Sri Lanka, where Theravada still dominates – and where there is also superb surf. In the US, Theravada mostly man- ifests through the teaching of Vipassana, particularly its popular meditation technique, mindfulness, the awareness of what is hap- pening now—thoughts, feelings, sensations—without judgment or attachment. Just as surfing is larger than, say, Kelly Slater, Theravada is larger than mindfulness. It’s a vast system of ethics and philoso- phies. That said, the essence of Theravada is using mindfulness to explore the Buddha’s first teaching, the Four Noble Truths, which go something like this: 1. Life is stressful. 2. Our constant desires make it stressful. 3. Freedom is possible. 4.     Teacher Transition in the Insight Meditation Movement Introduction In the next ten years, nearly all of the founding and senior teachers in the Insight movement will reduce or stop their teaching, and possibly some will die. We have just begun an important time of transition, worthy of reflection and considered action. Buddhism in the West is very young. We are still learning what it is by our very acts of practicing and teaching it. We still have much to learn from the particular sufferings and challenges of our modern life, from the ancient texts, and from each other. The seed has sprouted, and it needs nourishment. In some ways, there is nothing new happening here. Spiritual movements have been evolving beyond their founders for millennia, with a wide range of results. Buddhism itself has moved into new regions many times, as well as adapted to sweeping changes in a given region over time. We are fortunate to live in a time when there is access to such historical knowledge, as well as frameworks and tools from more modern disciplines. Nonetheless, this is the present place and time. We must act within our particular circumstances, with the people who are present, and with the resources at hand. Although our case is not special, it is, like all cases, unique. The Insight Meditation Movement in the West does not have a sharp definition, but neither is it vague or undefined. It was started by Westerners who trained at Theravada monasteries in Southeast Asia – these founding teachers include Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Christina Feldman, Christopher Titmuss, and Ruth Denison.

    European Buddhist Traditions Laurence Cox, National University of Ireland Maynooth Abstract: This chapter covers those Buddhist traditions which are largely based in Europe, noting some of the specificities of this history as against the North American with which it is sometimes conflated. While the reception history of Buddhism in Europe stretches back to Alexander, Buddhist organization in Europe begins in the later nineteenth century, with the partial exception of indigenous Buddhisms in the Russian Empire. The chapter discusses Asian- oriented Buddhisms with a strong European base; European neo-traditionalisms founded by charismatic individuals; explicitly new beginnings; and the broader world of “fuzzy religion” with Buddhist components, including New Age, “night-stand Buddhists”, Christian creolizations, secular mindfulness and engaged Buddhism. In general terms European Buddhist traditions reproduce the wider decline of religious institutionalization and boundary formation that shapes much of European religion generally. Objecting to newspaper reports presenting the latter, recently arrived in Britain, as the first bhikkhu in Europe, Dhammaloka argued on July 8th that Ananda Metteyya had not been properly ordained, citing the Upasampada-Kammavacana to show that ordinands must state their freedom from various diseases, including asthma (which Bennett suffered from). Ananda Metteyya replied on July 15th with a discussion of the Burmese Kammavacana and the Mahavagga and stated that he had believed himself cured at the time of ordination.
