Our January meeting was held at Grace Lutheran Church in Corvallis on the 19th of the month and hosted by Jody Parker & Linda Samuels. We had a short business meeting and then moved on to our guest speaker, author Karen Barnett.

Karen, who has a background as a park ranger, gave a presentation about her Vintage Park Se- ries with special insight into the research and writing process of her latest book Ever Faithful. This book takes place in Yellowstone National Park and Karen spent time there looking for the spirit of the park. After seeing all the “wonders” of this special park, she concluded that “the won- der of God’s works” was that spirit and that she would build her story around that.

She concluded her presentation with a sneak peek at the location for her next book, The Great Smokey Mountains Na- tional Park. We will be looking forward to hearing more from Karen.

Our next meeting will be March 19th at Scio Baptist Church with Lauri Blumenstein hosting and presenting the program on “Posters & Publicity.”

Designing and Signs for Displays—Betty Charnholm

Excerpts from a Conference Workshop:

Choose your paper Choose card stock over construction paper. Choose simple color palettes over neon, glitter and prints. Choose a simple, readable font Choose crisp readable fonts such as Arial, Lucida Sans or Century Gothic. Avoid difficult to read fonts such as Algerian, Bauhaus or Jokerman. Include a visual element associated with the theme of the display An author’s picture. A symbol or logo – large enough to see easily. (Use “Go Green” for Earth Day display)

A simple three-dimensional element that goes off the sign creates interest. (This sign posted on a cardboard tube to give it height, with a small basketball hoop at- tached would be great for books on biographies of Christian athletes.)

Less is more Incorporate white space into the sign design. Use fewer words rather than more. Remove prepositions and extra words. If more information is needed use bullet points; three is desired maximum. If even more information is needed, use a series of signs. Some displays may not need a sign; the display speaks for itself.

Create generic signs that can be used for a variety of displays Examples of Generic Signs: Happy Birthday (Author); Read (Author’s Name); Signs for Church Year ie, Books for Easter or other holiday Make a template on computer that can easily be changed with a few words or colors. Store signs you may use again in a vertical file and pull them out when a quick display is needed.

How to hold up signs… …other than purchased sign holders Use paper spirals from ceiling to hang info or book jackets over display. Use fishing line attached to paper clips attached to ceiling panels to hang signs. Paper tubes make sturdy stands. Cut desired length, cover with paper and cut slits in side to hold signs. Make a quickie cardboard tri-fold sign holder. Hang signs on cord above display, perhaps strung between hook eyes on either side of display area. Could use leaves for fall or other symbols during the year. Paper clips bent outward and taped to back of a small sign.
