Florida Jewish History Month January
Florida Jewish History Month January Background Information In October of 2003, Governor Jeb Bush signed a historic bill into law designating January of each year as Florida Jewish History Month. The legislation for Florida Jewish History Month was initiated at the Jewish Museum of Florida by, the Museum's Founding Executive Director and Chief Curator, Marcia Zerivitz. Ms. Zerivitz and State Senator Gwen Margolis worked closely with legislators to translate the Museum's mission into a statewide observance. It seemed appropriate to honor Jewish contributions to the State, as sixteen percent, over 850,000 people of the American Jewish community lives in Florida. Since 1763, when the first Jews settled in Pensacola immediately after the Treaty of Paris ceded Florida to Great Britain from Spain, Jews had come to Florida to escape persecution, for economic opportunity, to join family members already here, for the climate and lifestyle, for their health and to retire. It is a common belief that Florida Jewish history began after World War II, but in actuality, the history of Floridian Jews begins much earlier. The largest number of Jews settled in Florida after World War II, but the Jewish community in Florida reaches much further into the history of this State than simply the last half-century. Jews have actively participated in shaping the destiny of Florida since its inception, but until research of the 1980s, most of the facts were little known. One such fact is that David Levy Yulee, a Jewish pioneer, brought Florida into statehood in 1845, served as its first U.S. -

Reflections on the State Songs of Florida DAVID Z. KUSHNER According to the Laws of the State of Florida (Regular Session, 1913), House Government Resolution No. 24 stated, under the date of 12 May 1913, That, Whereas, in view of the fact that many of the Public Schools of the State are now singing, as a part of their daily exercise, the song, “Florida, My Florida,” a song written in 1894 by Rev. Dr. C.V. Waugh, for many years an honored Professor of Languages in the old Florida Agricultural College in Lake City, and whereas, The said song has both metrical and patriotic merit of the kind calculated to inspire love for home and native State, therefore, be it Resolved, that this song, “Florida, My Florida,” be and the same is hereby declared by the Legislature of the State of Florida to be the “State Song,” to be sung to the tune of “Maryland, My Maryland,” and that it is recommended for use in the daily exercises of the public schools of the State of Florida, as well as at all public gatherings where singing forms a part of the program. NEYLAND TATE-SUPPORTED HIGHER EDUCATION among Negroes in s Florida had its beginning during the decade of the 1880’s. The initial step in this new educational venture was taken by Governor William D. Bloxham who, during his first administra- tion, vigorously set forth a threefold economic and social program. In his inaugural address he declared that in order to promote the interest, welfare, and prosperity of the state, “we must in- vite a healthy immigration; develop our natural resources by se- curing proper transportation; and educate the rising generation.’’ 1 He promulgated this combination as “the three links in a grand chain of progress upon which we can confidently rely for our future growth and prosperity.’’ 2 During his four years in office, 1881-1885, Governor Blox- ham assidiously endeavored to implement his inaugural pledges. -

The goal of this project was to identify and record a specific type of historic resource located within rural areas of St. Johns County in the general vicinity of Elkton and Hastings. This assessment was specifically designed to examine structures listed on the St. Johns County Property Appraiser’s website as being built prior to 1920. The survey excluded the area of incorporated Hastings. The survey goals were to develop a historic context for the farmhouses in the area, and to make an assessment of the farmhouses with an emphasis towards individual and thematic National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) potential. Florida Master Site File (FMSF) forms in a SMARTFORM II database format were completed on all newly surveyed structures, and updated on all previously recorded structures within the survey area. -

Chapter 4: The Long and Winding Road to Park Establishment With the passage of the authorizing act for Everglades National Park in May 1934, the scene of action shifted from Washington to Florida. Section 1 of the act stipulated that no federal funds were to be appropriated for land acquisition. Land could be acquired only by donation from the state or from private parties. Addition- ally, the secretary of the interior would not accept land for the park on a piecemeal basis. The park would be considered established only when the state had assembled sufficient acreage that in the aggregate was acceptable to the secretary for administra- tion as a national park. About 20 percent of the land within the maximum authorized boundary was state owned. Among the state’s holdings were 99,200 acres in Monroe County that had been set aside in 1917 as a reservation for the use of the Seminole Indians.165 Some 50,000 acres already belonged to the federal government. President Franklin Roosevelt issued an executive order in October 1934 removing all federally owned land within the boundary from sale or settlement, so that it would remain available when the park was ultimately established.166 The Model Land Company, the Collier Corporation, and the Chevelier Corporation owned the great majority of the private holdings, but there were hundreds of small holders. The typical procedure for acquiring private land for a national park was for a state to set up a commission with authority to accept donations and purchase land. This procedure had been followed in acquiring land for Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Tennessee/North Carolina border and Big Bend National Park in Texas. -

This collection of cases was the culmination of years of legal groundwork laid by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in its work to end segregation. None of the cases would have been possible without individuals who were courageous enough to take a stand against the segregated system. Briggs v. Elliot The Briggs case was named for Harry Briggs, one of twenty parents who brought suit against R.W. Elliot, the president of the school board for Clarendon County, South Carolina. Initially, parents had only asked the county to provide school buses for the Black students as they did for Whites.
