On WLIW Hat the New York Times Called, “The Secret to Eternal Youth” Is Coming to the Small Screen LOWNING ROUND JUNE 2017 C A ON WLIW hat The New York Times called, “the secret to eternal youth” is coming to the small screen. Tony Award-winners Bill Irwin and David Shiner are coming to your living rooms in Theater Close-Up’s latest offering: Old Hats from Signature Theater in Manhattan. The award-winning team showcase their comedic talents to create a wild and remarkable outing of theater, with the addition of music and lyrics by and featuring Shaina Taub. W Signature enjoyed an extended, sold out run of the show in 2013 and brought it back last year to the thrill of audiences. The production reunites the clowns with original director Tina Landau and introduces their songstress and comic foil Taub, whom the San Francisco Chronicle hailed as “a young Judy Garland meets grown-up Lisa Simpson.” Using music, technology, and movement, plus other tricks up their respective sleeves, Irwin and Shiner create another wild and remarkable outing of theatre after this dynamic duo’s first collaboration, the Broadway hit Fool Moon. Irwin won his Tony Award in 2005 for the Broadway/West End revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. He is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer’s Fellowship, a Guggenheim, a Fulbright and a MacArthur Fellowship. Clown/playwright David Shiner starred in Cirque du Soleil and as The Cat in the Hat in Seussical: The Musical on Broadway. Theater Close-Up is dedicated to providing New Yorkers and beyond with unparalleled access to one of the City’s greatest underexposed cultural assets. ITALIAN AMERICANS OF AND FEBRUARY 2015 NEW YORK NEW JERSEY The largest Italian American population in the United States influences many vibrant and ever-evolving neighborhoods of New York and New Jersey. To celebrate the lives, achievements, and culture Italian Americans have brought to the metro area, WLIW21 is presenting Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a two-part series hosted by journalist Maria Bartiromo. The series, a companion program to the PBS broadcast The Italian Americans (Thursdays, February 19 & 26 at 9pm), highlights this large community’s rich culture and influence, featuring interviews with experts in Italian-American history and culture and prominent Italian Americans, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, chef Lidia Bastianich, the late Governor of New York Mario Cuomo, singer Tony Bennett, actress Susan Lucci, former New York Senator Al D’Amato, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, journalist Steve Adubato, actor Joe Piscopo, and many others. The program is further enhanced by the personal stories, videos, and photos viewers have shared on the Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey webpage (thirteen.org/italian-americans-ny-nj). Host Maria Bartiromo (left) shares a moving testimonial about her Italian-American heritage and childhood in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where her family owned a restaurant called Rex Manor that was named after the boat that took her grandfather, Carmine — a brick layer from Salerno, Italy — to America in 1919. Working at The Rex was a true family affair for the Bartiromos and an invaluable lesson for young Maria about the importance of having a strong work ethic.

  • Bill Moyers' Speech to the National Conference for Media Reform
Bill Moyers' speech to the National Conference for Media Reform From Free Press, May 16, 2005 By Bill Moyers The following is the prepared text for Bill Moyers’ speech to the National Conference for Media Reform on May 15, 2005. The event in St. Louis was organized and hosted by Free Press (www.freepress.net). Click here to listen an audio recording of the speech. Click here to watch a video of the speech. To join Free Press’ campaign to put the public back into PBS, please add your name to our petition calling for the resignation of Kenneth Tomlinson and the creation of a series of town meetings across the country on the future of public broadcasting. I CAN’T IMAGINE BETTER COMPANY ON THIS BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY MORNING IN ST. LOUIS. You’re church for me today, and there’s no congregation in the country where I would be more likely to find more kindred souls than are gathered here. There are so many different vocations and callings in this room — so many different interests and aspirations of people who want to reform the media — that only a presiding bishop like Bob McChesney with his great ecumenical heart could bring us together for a weekend like this. What joins us all under Bob’s embracing welcome is our commitment to public media. Pat Aufderheide got it right, I think, in the recent issue of In These Times when she wrote: “This is a moment when public media outlets can make a powerful case for themselves. Public radio, public TV, cable access, public DBS channels, media arts centers, youth media projects, nonprofit Internet news services … low-power radio and webcasting are all part of a nearly invisible feature of today’s media map: the public media sector.

  • Review of Alleged Actions Violating the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, As Amended
Corporation For Public Broadcasting Office of Inspector General REPORT OF REVIEW Review of Alleged Actions Violating The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, as Amended Report No. EPB503-602 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Office of Inspector General, has conducted a review of alleged violations of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, as amended. We found evidence that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) former Chairman violated statutory provisions and the Director’s Code of Ethics by dealing directly with one of the creators of a new public affairs program during negotiations with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the CPB over creating the show. Our review also found evidence that suggests “political tests” were a major criteria used by the former Chairman in recruiting a President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for CPB, which violated statutory prohibitions against such practices. Our review of the hiring of a consultant to review program content for objectivity and balance showed that such reviews were consistent with Section 19(2)(B) of the Public Telecommunications Act of 1992, however problems occurred when the former Chairman initiated such actions without informing the Board and signed the contract without Board authorization. Further, CPB has never developed a policy for how such reviews should be conducted and what would be acceptable criteria for evaluating program content. Had a policy been established and developed in conjunction with the public broadcasting community, the community would have understood the purpose and use of such a review to ensure accountability to Congress and the American people, as envisioned by the statutory requirement.
