But none attempts to attain sagacity, Wisdom and character. What else is to be conveyed to this Assembly of learned people? (Telugu Poem) IT is a rare privilege to be born as a human being. Man is endowed with a gentle heart and a sweet mind. He is gifted with precious time. But it is unfortunate that man is unable to recognize his true nature. One cannot be called a human being just because one has a human body. Man is, in fact, the very form of the Virat Swarupa (the Cosmic Person). Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33 2 He is the repository of all powers that pervade the cosmos. But he is unable to recognize his own capabilities and does not make use of even a small fraction of them. First Recognise Your Own Value Today man is devoid of peace and happiness. Why is it so? How is it that man endowed with a precious and rare life, a soft heart, a sweet mind and valuable time is unable to enjoy the benefits of these valuable possessions and enjoy peace? Unaware of his innate potential and forgetting his true nature, man becomes narrow-minded, selfish and suffers from lack of mental peace. In fact, he is being gobbled by the demon of selfishness. Ancient man led a very peaceful and happy life. Restlessness of the mind was alien to him because he adhered to Sathya and Dharma. Why does man today lack peace of mind? What is it that contributes to the transformation of human heart? As is the fire, so is the smoke; as is the smoke, so is the cloud; as is the cloud, so is the rain; as is the rain, so is the crop; as is the crop, so is the food and as is the food, so is the mind. Even the habits of eating and drinking of men today are not proper. What is the true ornament of man? Lotuses are the ornaments of lakes. Houses and buildings are the Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33 3 ornaments of villages and towns. The waves of the ocean are its ornaments. The moon beautifies the sky. Character is the true ornament of man. The loss of this ornament is the source of all his suffering and misery. Man does not realize the purpose for which he has been created by God. God’s creation is endowed with several truths, mysteries and ideals. But man has forgotten these ideals. He is unable to appreciate the significance of his legacy. Of all the powers in the world, human power is the greatest. In fact, it is man who assesses the value of all the materials of the world. Who gives value to a diamond or, for that matter, to gold? Who attaches value to land? Is it not man? Man assigns value to everything in this world, but he is unable to recognize his own value. Then how can he ever understand the value of divinity? First of all, man has to realize the values of human life. Only then will he be in a position to understand divinity. God does not reside in paradise or Kailasa. These are His temporary camping stations. The true dwelling place of God is the heart of man. You don’t need to go in search of God. He is not in a foreign land. Similarly, sin does not exist in some foreign land; it is attached to your actions. Not being able to recognize your innate divinity is ajnana (ignorance). You have to enquire into the reason for this ignorance. This is mainly because you follow pravritti marga (outward path) all your life under the influence of sense organs, which are Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33 4 projected outward. You are not making any effort to follow nivritti marga (inward journey). All that you see, hear or think are outward acts. In fact, everything that you do is outward. Thus, you are fully engrossed in the outward activities and are completely neglecting the inward path. Wisdom Dispels Ignorance Embodiments of Love! You need to make an effort to understand the value of man. In fact, there is no divinity other than that present in man. Thus, first it is necessary to under- stand man before you can even attempt to understand divinity. In fact, there is no difference between man and divinity. Man is God; God is man. There is only difference of perception. You see the world with a worldly view and do not recognize the divinity that pervades it. You have to make an effort to change your vision from outward to inward to perceive this divinity. Here is a rose. From the worldly point of view it is just a flower. But, from the divine point of view it is the flower of the heart. Wherefrom do you have this capacity to perceive the shape and smell of a rose? It is from the Divine. Your inability to perceive the omnipresent divinity is the main cause of all the pains and miseries you suffer in this world. Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33 5 Madalasa imparted the knowledge of this basic truth to her children from their childhood. She told them, “My dear children, you are not this physical body. Do not mistake physical things for spiritual realities. Don’t become a victim of delusion due to your attachment. This delusion gives you the mistaken impression of the physical reality. Just as the dream state disappears when you wake up from sleep, the delusion caused by moha (attachment) disappears when you awaken into the state of jnana (wisdom).” Moha Makes You Forget Your True Form When do you get dreams? You attribute dreams to your food or your thoughts. But this is not true. Give up this attachment of samsara (world) and wake up from the sleep of delusion. Moha makes you forget your true form. If there is no sleep at all, there is no dream possible. Therefore, sleep is the main cause of dreams. For the dream of ajnana (ignorance), avidya (lack of true knowledge) is the cause. Therefore, do not fall into the sleep of avidya. Teaching this way, she transformed all her children into great Yogis. Human birth has not been gifted to man merely to indulge in worldly pleasures. None of the worldly pleasures is capable of conferring true satisfaction. They only increase your desires more and more. Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33 6 Therefore, man should give up worldly desires and recognize the principle of divinity. New Year Augurs Well For Humanity From the physical and worldly point of view, today marks the beginning of the year 2000. This is not a universal measure of time as it is restricted only to a particular calendar. Moreover, it applies only to vyashti (individual) and not to samashti (cosmos) because cosmos is beyond worldly time - frame while individual is bound by time and space. Cosmos, in fact, is divinity itself. The individual is jeeva while the cosmos is deva (divinity). From the point of view of divinity, 2000 years form merely an infinitesimal speck. Several million years have gone by in the past.

It is proceeded by an enunciation of another process of meditation known as the Panchagni Vidya. Though the two sections form independent themes and one can be studied and practised without reference to the other, it is in fact held by exponents of the Upanishads that the Vaishvanara Vidya is the panacea prescribed for the ills of life consequent upon the transmigratory process to which individuals are subject, a theme which is the central point that issues from a consideration of the Panchagni Vidya. This work consists of the lectures delivered by the author on this subject, and herein are reproduced these expositions dilating upon the two doctrines mentioned.

  • Mandukya Upanishad
The Sleep of the Awakened The Sleep of the Awakened A Beginner's Introduction to the Mandukya Upanishad by Sudarshan K Madabushi As a child I remember I was ordered by mother not to go to bed without the name of God upon my lips. Without asking for the reason why, I would obediently mutter the 'nAma' of "mAdhava" thrice and turn off to sleep. Similarly, immediately on waking up I was told I should almost bellow out the 'nAma' of "hari" seven times before starting the day. ("It does not matter if others around you too are startled awake... That's part of the purpose, anyway!" mother would chuckle!) The habit grew on me over the years, thanks largely to my dear departed mother. It was not until many years later that I learnt the practice of uttering the 'nAma' of God, before and after a night of sleep, has its origins in ancient scriptures. AndAl in the "tiruppAvai", for instance, sings: "uLLatthu kondu munivargaLUm yOgigaLum mELLa-ezhundhu ari-yenra pEraravam, uLLam pugundhu kuLirndh-elOr empaavaay!" (stanza 6) "Yogis and 'muni-s' awaken with the blessed name of Hari upon their lips and minds..." Sleep is a deeply mystical, sacred experience. We all sleep. Hence we are all mystics… and to utter the name of God before and after going to sleep is a good way to remind ourselves of the fact. "Mother of Fresh Thought" We work hard all day, go about the hectic business of our daily life, and expend precious life energy on a hundred things and activities through the restless waking hour.

  • Narada Bhakti Sutra a Summary of Swami Tadatmananda’S Discourse October 17, 2006
Narada Bhakti Sutra A summary of Swami Tadatmananda’s Discourse October 17, 2006 As was noted previously, the primary means to pursue the goal of sadhya bhakti is nyaasa, which is a process of negation (rather than acquisition) that leads to the discovery that you already are what you want to become. Nyaasa has two aspects: ananyata (non-difference) and udaasinata (indifference). Ananyata implies a state of being not different (one or advaita), whereas udasinata implies a lack of interest towards pursuits other than spiritual growth. Since sutras are terse statements, they can have more than one meaning. Thus, ananyata and udasinata, in the next few sutras have meanings applicable to both sadhana and sadhya bhakti. Ananyata as sadhana bhakti is a commitment to nothing other than the pursuit of one’s goal, i.e., reaching God. With respect to sadhya bhakti it is the state of having reached that goal- being “no other” or being non- separate from God (aadvaita). Similarly, udasinata, for sadhana bhakti is to stay away from any other interests and attachments except spiritual growth, whereas for sadhya bhakti it is the state of indifference (towards non-spiritual interests) that has been achieved. Sutra 11: Loka-vedeshu tad-anukoola-aacharanam tad-virodhishu udaasinata Translation: Indifference to worldly and sacred activities that are opposed to “that” and performance of those that are conducive to “that”. Commentary: This sutra further clarifies that udasinata to worldly and sacred activities (prescribed by Vedas) means to avoid those worldly and sacred (Vedic) activities that hinder spiritual growth and to do the ones that are conducive to attaining “that”, i.e., prema bhakti; specifically, make spiritual growth your number one priority.

1 UNIT 1 ADVAITA VEDANTA Contents 1.0. Objectives 1.1. Introduction 1.2. Brahman and Atman 1.3. Avidya and Maya 1.4. Karya and Karana (effect and cause) 1.5. Knowledge 1.6. Attaining Liberation through Knowledge 1.7. Let us sum up 1.8. Key words and sentences 1.9. Further Reading & References 1.0. OBJECTIVES This unit is about Advaita Vedanta, its meaning and significance in Indian Philosophy. The word Advaita according to the dictionary is non-dualism, especially in relation to identifying Brahman with the Universal, or with Soul or the sprit and matter. It also means peerless and unique. Literal meaning of Vedanta is the end of Veda. Upanishads came at the end of Veda, they are the Jnana Kandas. They teach knowledge of Brahman or the universal Spirit, who is described as both - Creator and Creation, Actor and Act, Existence, Knowledge, and Joy. Upanishad’s Major Teachings are – the Self exists, it is immortal without a beginning or an end, essentially non – material, and the self is identical with Brahman, the highest Reality, and the Absolute. The main feature of Advaita Vedanta is to understand Brahman, the Supreme Soul. To understand Brahman one has to attain knowledge, overcome ignorance, and be liberated and be in vigilant state at the conscious level. Advaita Vedanta teaches three stages of truth. The first stage is the transcendental or Paramarthika in which Brahman is the only reality and nothing else. The second stage is the pragmatic or Vyavaharika in which both Jiva (living creatures and individual souls) and God are true, and the material world is also true.

  • Ramayan Ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu Way of Life and the Contribution of Hindu Women, Amongst Others
Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.
