A delivery of 2.03 lakh tonnes (valued at ₹948 crore) was executed in castorseed January contracts on the NCDEX. This is the highest ever delivery executed in any agriculture commodity on the exchange platform in terms of both value and quantity, the FMC said in a statement on Monday. On the coriander front, 8,230 tonnes valued at ₹95 crore, were delivered, again a record for the commodity on an exchange platform. FMC has observed abnormal price volatility and open interest build-up in both these commodities on the NCDEX and issued orders for staggered delivery, starting from December 29 instead of January 11. Pre-expiry margins of 100 per cent were imposed on both buyers and sellers to curtail fresh positions. After the FMC order, inventory of castor seed, at 2.05 lakh tonnes as on December 19, increased to 4.30 lakh tonnes (₹2,100 crore) on January 19, at exchange accredited warehouses. Open interest reduced to 0.36 lakh tonnes from 3.46 lakh tonnes. In coriander, inventory increased to 10,858 tonnes from 6,923 tonnes, while open interest reduced to 2,840 tonnes from 27,130 tonnes, in a matter of one month, said the FMC. Website: business-standard.com Date : February 02, 2015 Headline: FMC curbs abnormal volatility in castor seed, coriander Forward Markets Commission’s (FMC) attempts to control abnormal volatility and build-up of open interest with 100 per cent margins resulted in agri commodities’ highest ever delivery in castor seed in January 2015 on the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange(NCDEX), the markets regulator said on Monday. FMC had noticed abnormal volatility in prices and build-up of open interest in castor seed and coriander contracts. Hence, it directed the NCDEX to advance staggered delivery in these commodities effective December 29 instead of January 11 and levied 100 per cent margins with effect from December 26. The action resulted in castor seed stocks, which stood at 205,000 tonnes on December 19, 2014, increasing to 430,000 tonnes (worth Rs 2,100 crore) as of January 19, the highest stock deposited at exchange-accredited warehouses. Also, the open interest of January contract reduced from 346,000 tonnes to 36,000 tonnes during the period. A delivery of 203,000 tonnes (worth Rs 948 crore) on the NCDEX for castor seed January contract recorded the highest ever in any agri-commodities on futures exchanges, the statement noted. Similarly, coriander stocks - which were 6,923 tonnes on December 19, 2014 - jumped to 10,858 tonnes as on January 19, 2015, while open interest fell from 27,130 tonnes to 2,840 tonnes in the period under review. In coriander also, the delivery of 8,230 tonnes (worth Rs 95 crore) executed for January contract at the NCDEX recorded the highest in coriander. “The large-scale physical delivery on the exchange platform is a clear indication of the healthy participation of physical market players in commodity exchanges and the effective hedging on this platform,” the statement added. They are published in Malayalam when Indian Muslim Press outside Kerala concentrates on Urdu journalism. And, most of these newspapers have a promising newsroom diversity employing Muslim and non-Muslim women, Dalits and professionals from minority and majority religions. However, how effective are these newspapers in forming public opinion among community members and setting agendas for community issues in public sphere? The study, which is centered on this fundamental question and based on the conceptual framework of agenda setting theory and functional perspective of minority media, examines the role of Muslim newspapers in Kerala in forming a politically vibrant, progress oriented, Muslim community in Kerala, bringing a collective Muslim public opinion into being, Influencing non-Muslim media programming on Muslim issues and influencing the policy agenda of the Government on Muslim issues. The results provide empirical evidences to support the fact that news selection and presentation preferences and strategies of Muslim newspapers in Kerala are in line with Muslim communities’ news consumption pattern and related dynamics. Similarly, Muslim public’s perception of community issues are formed in accordance with the news framing and priming by Muslim newspapers in Kerala. The findings trigger more justifications for micro level analysis of the functioning of the Muslim press in Kerala to explore the community variable in agenda setting schema and the significance of minority press in democratic political context.

SWAMINATHAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION FOREWORD Every calamity presents opportunities for progress provided we learn appropriate lessons from the calamity and apply effective remedies to prevent its recurrence. The Alappuzha district along with Kuttanad region has been chosen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India for special consideration in view of the prevailing agrarian distress. In spite of its natural wealth, the district has a high proportion of population living in poverty. The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation was invited by the Union Ministry of Agriculture to go into the economic and ecological problems of the Alappuzha district as well as the Kuttanad Wetland Ecosystem as a whole. The present report is the result of the study undertaken in response to the request of the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The study team was headed by Dr. S. Bala Ravi, Advisor of MSSRF with Drs. Sudha Nair, Anil Kumar and Ms. Deepa Varma as members. The Team was supported by a panel of eminent technical advisors. Recognising that the process of preparation of such reports is as important as the product, the MSSRF team held wide ranging consultations with all concerned with the economy, ecological security and livelihood security of Kuttanad wetlands. Information on the consultations held and visits made are given in the report. The report contains a malady-remedy analysis of the problems and potential solutions.
