Annie Lennox Is Honoured with the 22Nd Music Industry Trusts Award ANNIE LENNOX IS HONOURED WITH THE 22ND MUSIC INDUSTRY TRUSTS AWARD Thursday 27 June 2013: Annie Lennox, iconic singer, songwriter and philanthropist, is to be honoured with the 22nd Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS). This prestigious music award is presented to Annie in recognition of her outstanding contribution to British music and her tireless charity work. The Award will be presented on Monday 4th November at a gala dinner in aid of Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust. David Munns OBE, chairman of the MITS Award committee, said: “This is very much an award from the wider British music business to honour Annie Lennox’s unique contributions to our industry. Every year - and this is our 22nd year - the British music industry comes together to honour and salute one person’s special contribution. This year the MITS Award is being presented to Annie in recognition of her universally acclaimed status as artist, songwriter, HIV/Aids Activist and social activist who indefatigably supports and raises awareness for HIV charities in Africa, and champions humanitarian causes. One of Britain’s most successful songwriters, the recipient of eight BRIT Awards, four Ivor Awards and four Grammys and the most successful female British artist in UK music history with over 80 million records sold worldwide: Annie Lennox we salute and celebrate you.” One of the most accomplished artists of our time, Annie Lennox is celebrated as an innovator, an icon, and a symbol of enduring excellence. Her music career is peerless. This remarkable journey began in 1971, at the age of 17, when Lennox left her native Scotland to take up a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London. From a fortuitous chance encounter with Dave Stewart in the early seventies, the pair went on to form The Tourists, who ultimately achieved significant success in the UK, Europe and Australia. It was not until the break up of the band in '79 however, that Annie and Dave decided to form a duo, calling themselves "Eurythmics". They released their first album, "In the Garden," in 1981, but it was not until the worldwide success of their second album, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” in 1983, that Eurythmics became the musical phenomenon we know today. Eurythmics went on to sell over 75 million albums, and achieved over 20 hits across the world. In 1990, Annie released her debut solo album entitled "Diva". Entering the charts at number 1 in the UK, the album sold around six million copies worldwide (including two and a half million in the USA). "Diva" included the Top 10 singles "Why", "Walking On Broken Glass" and "Little Bird". The massive global success of “Diva” launched Annie as a major solo artist with a career that continues to dazzle and delight. Music has given me a lifetime of experiences and opportunities that I never would have dreamed possible, and I feel very privileged to have been able to become an artist and communicator, especially as a woman." The Music Industry Trusts Award, now in its 22nd year, has raised over £4.3 million for Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust. It has earned its respected place in the entertainment industry due to the great names that have held this honour: Sir George Martin, Ahmet Ertegun, Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Lucian Grainge CBE, John Barry OBE, Sir Michael Parkinson CBE, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue OBE, Sir Harvey Goldsmith, Jools Holland OBE and Gary Barlow OBE. The Award was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the UK music industry as well as to benefit the charitable work of Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust. But in Lennox’s voice there’s a certain acidity that grounds us firmly in reality rather than suave fantasy. Ugly, real emotions are never far beneath the illusion, and on her cover of “Take Me to the River” or as she whispers into the mic on “Why,” she’s ready to kill. Even on something as atmospheric as “Downtown Lights,” she never allows herself to disappear into the mix. Helen Folasade Adu never loses her cool, but Lennox ends her best-known solo song, a jaw-dropping cover of obscure British band The Lover Speaks’ “No More I Love You’s,” by bursting into tears. Lennox was a relative veteran by the time she released her solo debut Diva at 37. She’d come to fame in the Eurythmics but had been kicking around since the ‘70s, as part of Scottish band the Tourists. After her personal and professional relationship with guitarist Dave Stewart ended, Lennox wrote most of Diva herself and settled on a new sound: less lean and more immersive than that project’s rock-band hijinks, with Lennox’s voice in the center of an environment rather than at the front of a machine.     Turner Contemporary The Tourists: Ellen Harvey and JMW Turner May 18 - September 26, 2021 10 years after appearing in the gallery's opening exhibition Revealed, artist Ellen Harvey returns to Turner Contemporary opening the anniversary programme with her first UK solo show The Tourists, an exhibition paired with works by JMW Turner. The Tourists explores themes of tourism and ecology, our relationship to images, architecture and place, destruction and loss. Working in painting, sculpture and digital media, this exhibition brings together a group of Harvey's large-scale installations comprised of meticulously rendered paint­ ings and engravings. The centre-piece to the show is a new work called The Disappointed Tourist, comprising over 200 paintings of sites that have disappeared. From the Temple of Bel in Syria to Brandy Bucks restaurant in Margate, Harvey has crowd sourced places from across the world. Em­ barking on this work before the Covid-crisis, it has developed an unexpected resonance. "After a year where we've all been disappointed tourists, it feels like a good time to explore what it is that we really love about our world and to think about how we can tread more lightly on the beauties that we have all longed to visit." Harvey has selected two groups of works by JMW Turner, which resonate with her own explorations into image-making, experience and place. They focus on two very different tourist destinations: the ancient ruins of Italy, which Turner longed to visit from a young age, and Margate, which captured his imagination in his later years. Harvey has had a long interest in JMW Turner and Margate, and in 2011 she created Arcadia in re­ sponse to Turner's relationship with Margate for Turner Contemporary's opening show Revealed.
