Asian Art Treasures at Auction Highlights from the Asian art auction 29 May in Copenhagen May 18, 2018 07:14 UTC Asian Art Treasures at Auction Yongzheng Porcelain, Shi Tao’s Landscape and Books About the Forbidden City. Once again, it is time for the year's first traditional auction of art and antiques from Asia at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen, ranging in time from the 700s to the late Qing period of the 20th century. "With three of the highlights at the auction, we dive into the years 1723-35, where Emperor Yongzheng ruled over a culturally progressive and diverse period in China's history. The Emperor himself was very much interested in art, and he became a leading advocate for a refined and innovative idiom that drew on the style of former dynasties as well as incorporating stylistic concepts from other cultures," says Ralph Lexner, head of the Asian art department at Bruun Rasmussen. Porcelain from the period of Emperor Yongzheng The time period represents one of the richest periods in China’s history, especially in the case of decorative art made of porcelain. This is evident in a set of 12 dishes, where the motifs depict the myth of the five-clawed dragon in the pursuit of the flaming pearl. The dishes originate from the collection of the Dane Ludvig Stenersen Münter, who was stationed in China with the Great Northern Telegraph Company during the first three decades of the 20th century. As a contrast to the richly decorated and polychrome decorative art, the monochrome expression also found its way to the porcelain of the period, as can be seen in a bowl decorated with green celadon glaze and a pattern of chrysanthemum and tendrils. This bowl was brought to Denmark by the civil engineer Carl Gimbel, who worked as a math professor at the Imperial University in Beijing in the years 1910-1928. The yellow colour was favoured in the Yongzheng period and has been stretched to its limits with the two lemon yellow porcelain cups from the collection of Karl Theodor Nielsen. Over time, Nielsen managed to become both the director of the East Asiatic Company and Nordisk Fjer (Nordic feather) in China during the first half of the 1900s. Scrolls, books and bronze figures The auction also presents a silk hanging scroll with a beautiful landscape from the Hunan Province. It was made by Chinese Shi Tao, who was born during the Ming Dynasty in 1642. He served as a landscape painter in the early Qing dynasty and is considered one of the most celebrated artists in the history of China. The hanging scroll was purchased in 1977 at the Milne Henderson Gallery in London by the museum director of The David Collection in Copenhagen, André Leth, on behalf of the current owner's family. A unique set of books from 1906 with photographs and hand-coloured maps of the imperial palaces in the Forbidden City in Beijing has also found its way to the auction along with a Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze figure of the merciful Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara from the 16th-17thcentury. Both cultural treasures originate from the collection of the previously mentioned civil engineer Carl Gimbel. The quake was caused by a remarkable change in the strategic nature and relative importance of the largest enterprises. A long‐term database has illuminated how the annual GDP‐Total Revenue relation (GDP/TR) of the 115 largest Danish corporations was relatively stable around 65 percent from 1975 to 1985. 1 Then at the end of the 1980s the GDP/TR jumped from 67% in 1986 to 84% in 1990. Similarly the total number of employees (in Denmark and abroad) of the 25 largest companies was relatively stable from 155.329 in 1973 to 190.925 in 1983 but then it doubled to 386.337 in 1993 and continued to grow to 814.312 employees in 2003.2 In the early 1970s the largest Danish companies were traditional exporters with domestic production and a relatively low status in the global corporate hierarchy. At the turn of 1990s they had become truly globalized and for the first time to be found among European market leaders within important economic sectors such as the diary, cleaning, brewing, shipping, slaughter house and windmill industries.3 A second dramatic turn on the economic Richter‐scale occurred in the late 1980s concerning the GDP/FDI relation.

This time around we started out with Asian art, where we managed to achieve the auction's first million kroner hammer price with twelve Chinese dragon dishes from the period between 1723 and 1735. "We had great expectations for the Chinese dragon dishes, which were estimated at DKK 500,000-800,000 (€ 67,000-108,000), but they ended up making it past the one million kroner mark, which was absolutely wonderful. The dishes are from an exciting period, where the Emperor Yongzheng led a culturally progressive and diverse period in China's history. The Emperor himself was very much absorbed with art and became a leading figure in promoting a refined and innovative idiom that drew on inspiration from both former dynasties as well as styles from other cultures. Especially when it comes to decorative art made of porcelain, the period can be characterized as one of the culturally richest in China’s history. This is reflected in the beautiful dishes depicting the five-clawed dragon in pursuit of the flaming pearl," says Ralph Lexner, Head of the Asian Art Department. QOD was established in 2000 and produce at its own production facility in the western part of Denmark. The founders have a long experience in producing and selling commodity based bedding material out of China, but have also had a vision of producing and selling premium quality products based on European raw material and production skills. After having consulted their main customers and made some market research the founders saw enough market potential to establish QOD and built a state-of-art production facility to supply the upper segment of the bedding market. From the very beginning QOD employed experienced people so no steep learning curve was needed and great autonomy and responsibility was given, which benefited the company in this stage of the life-cycle. QOD soon realized that making premium products was not sufficient to be successful. They also had to be innovative and if possible even be the front runner of the industry. In consequence they applied a NASA-developed technology to give their beddings new improved features. This proved to be a good strategy as the new bedding-concept was exceptionally well accepted by the market and within short placed QOD in a front position in the bedding market.

The actual location is: Gl. Fabriksvej 7 in the village of Elsmark in the northern part of the island of Als. It is the farm where Mads Clausen was born in 1905, and to which he returned in 1933 to start his own company. Not many companies are fortunate enough to be located close to the spot where it all began. Today, on fertile Als in southern Denmark, surrounded by rich soil and roads lined with cherry trees, you will find one of Denmark’s largest industrial companies: Danfoss. Just a few hundred meters away, the farm stands quietly and idyllically behind the hill. The farm is still owned by the Clausen family and it is now a company museum which shows the development from Mads Clausen’s first mechanical valve to the advanced mechatronic products of today. Mads Clausen’s boyhood room can be found in the attic. For many years, it was his office and from here he administered his global company. Many prominent guests have been received in these surroundings. The other rooms in the attic include a drawing office and a company library with old drawings, brochures, press cuttings, company newsletters, photographs and movies.
